Origin of the surname “Irvine:”
The names Ervin, Erwin,
Irvine, Irving, Irwin, etc. originate from the Welsh name Erwyn,
which means very fair, white, and beautiful.
One of the earliest of that name in America was Edward Erwin, a resident
of Dover, New Hampshire as early as 1658.
The name of the family under
consideration in this annex was originally Irwin, a Scotch family that settled
in Ulster, Ireland under grant from James the 6th of Scotland. As the Irvine family, they emigrated
to America from Ireland, where they had settled on leaving Scotland.
