5 Thomas Andress/Andrews (photos)
"Uncle Tommy"
1. Biographical notes:
Born 6 December 1806 in London, England. Died 28 February/21/1 March
1887, age 82, in Texas.
Emmigrated to the US. In his
later years resided with his son-in-law, William Weakley Chadwell. Apparently changed his surname from Andress
to Andrews. After his wife (Henrietta)
died, resided with his daughter and son-in-law, William Weakley and Sally Ella
Frances (Andrews) Chadwell.
Per Josie Lee (Watkins) Kennedy: "Thomas Andrews was 'quite a
person.' He was very quiet. He was a very home sick man. He had come from Liverpool, England for a
lark and had planned on returning to England.
However, he married and his wife was always afraid to go across the
water, so he couldn't go home. He used
to write to his family in England, but they always pleaded with him to return,
so he had to quit writing, because he was unhappy about the situation. He spoke with a very British accent. He was a medium size man with fair skin and
hair. He came to America between 1834
(as he was made an Odd Fellow that year in England) and 30 December 1841 (the
day he married in Marshall County, Tennessee.
Margaret Needham (Mrs.), a granddaughter said that he landed in New
York, and that he kept his money hidden in a wooden churn on the voyage. When he arrived in New York he bought a
shipment of corn - then turned right around and sold it for a very nice
profit."
Per Frances Lee (Kennedy) Biles: "This Thomas Andrews family were
called Andrews in Tennessee, where Thomas and Henrietta were married, but down
in Texas it seems that every one kept calling them Andress - partly because the
writing of the 'ws' appeared to be 'ss,' and I suppose partly the way Thomas
pronounced his name, as he had a very British accent. Anyway, whatever all the reasons, this family
is now called 'Andress'." "The
Bible of son George Thomas Andrews has all the names as 'Andrews,' but the
other Bibles use the name 'Andress'."
2. Wife: Henrietta H. Squires
Born 22 December 1821 in Tennessee; daughter of George Washington (b. 1785 in Bedford Co., VA, d. before 1840) and Sarah
(Willis) Squires (b. 29 Nov 1791 in Culpeper Co., VA, d. 6 Apr 1872
in Trenton Twp, Fannin Co., TX). Died 6
March 1885 in Cooke County, Texas.

Tennessee. Was an experienced and
respected mid-wife and medical provider in her neighborhood.

care of sick people. However, she was
reared a lady and didn't know how to cook when the slaves were freed. I believe they [grandparents, aunts &
uncles] were small of stature. Aunt
Margaret Aldridge was tallest, she was about 5 ft. 6 inches. Mother and Aunt Jo were about 5 ft. 2
in. None of our men were over 6 ft. Aunt Margaret had 4 boys who were over 6
t. I imagine they were 6 ft. 3 in. All in all though, I do believe that they,
the entire clan, were medium height."
