Born 12 January 1836 at Hasselt, Zwartewaterland Municipality, Overijssel, Netherlands. Died 7 May 1920 at Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan; interred there in Garfield Park Cemetery. Immigrated to the US from the Netherlands, arriving at New York City on 6 April 1882.

 

1900 US Census: John Berkhoff, age 64 (b. Jan 1836 in the Netherlands; parents b. Netherlands) and employed as a preacher, was heading a household at 285 Eleventh Street in the City of Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan. He immigrated to the US in 188 The household also included his wife of 37 years, Gerrje Berkhoff, age 60 (b. Oct 1839 in the Netherlands; parents b. Netherlands), who had had 12 children, 3 of whom were still alive; son, Lucas Berkhoff, age 26 (b. Oct 1873 in the Netherlands), single, and a student; son, John Berkhoff, age 23 (b. Mar 1877 in Netherlands), single, and employed as a cabinet maker; and son, Ralf Berkhoff, age 15 (b. Nov 1884 in MI), single, and employed attending a machine. Those born in the Netherlands immigrated to the US in 1882.

Born 11 October 1839 at Gasselte, Aa en Hunze Municipality, Drenthe, Netherlands; daughter of Lucas and Jentje (van Veen) Poorten. Died 25 July 1925 at Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan; interred with Jan. Married John/Jan Berkhof on 23 April 1863 in the Netherlands.

Born 14 October 1873 in Emmen Municiipality, Drenthe, Netherlands. Died 18 May 1957 at Blodgett Memorial Hospital, Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan; interred. Employed as a professor (later President) at Calvin Theological Seminary, Calvin College, Grand Rapids.

 

1900 US Census: Lucas Berkhoff, age 26 (b. Oct 1873 in the Netherlands), single, and a student, resided with his parents at Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan (see above).

 

1910 US Census: Louis Berkoff, age 36 (b. Holland; parents b. Holland) and employed as a professor at Clastion? Reform Theological School, was heading a household at 280 Worden Street in the City of Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan. He immigrated to the US in 1882 (subsequently naturalized) and had been married once. The household also included his wife of 9 years, Rika J. Berkhof, age 38 (b. MI; parents b. Holland), who had been married once and had had 3 children, all still alive; daughter, Gracie A. Berkhof, age 7 (b. MI); son, William Berkhof, age 5 (b. MI); daughter, Jeanetta Berkhof, age 2 (b. MI): and boarder, William Kloosterman, age 76 (b. Holland) and widowed.

 

1920 US Census: Louis Berkhof, age 46 (b. Netherlands; parents b. Netherlands) and employed as a college teacher, was heading a household at 834 Worden Street in the City of Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan. He spoke Dutch, immigrated to the US in 1882, and became a naturalized citizen in 1896. The household also included his wife, Reka Berkhof, age 48 (b. MI; parents b. Netherlands and spoke Dutch); daughter, Grace A. Berkhof, age 17 (b. MI), single, and not employed; son, William Berkhof, age 15 (b. MI), single, and not employed; daughter, Jennette Berkhof, age 12 (b. MI); son, John Berkhof, age 9 (b. MI); and father-in-law, William Kloosterman, age 85 (b. Netherlands; parents b. Born January 1891 in Muskegon Township, Muskegon County, Michigan. Died 19 February 1984, age 93, at Orange City, Sioux County, Iowa; interred Woodlawn Cemetery, Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan. Her obituary mentioned the following children: Peter and Joanne DeJong, Wilma H. Brouwer, William and Adrianne Berkhof, Sidney and Jean Stuk, and John and Marcia Berkhof; also sisters, Henrietta Brouwers, and Henry and Clazene VandeVelde. Married (1st) Herman Heyns (b. 1889, d. 1921) and apparently had the following children:

(b. Mrs. John Brouwer of Denver, Colorado.

 

Widow Dena Heyns married (2nd) widower Louis Berkhof (b. 1873, d. 1957).

1. Biographical notes:

 

Born 1 December 1904 at Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan. Died there 22 November 2003, age 98; interred there in Woodlawn Cemetery. Employed as an educator.

 

1940 US Census: William Berkhof, age 35 (b. MI) and employed as a high school superintendant, was heading a household at 210 Union North in the Village of Tecumseh, Tecumseh Township, Lenawee County, Michigan. No education level recorded. The household also included his wife, Adrianne Berkhof, age 33 (b. MI), who had completed 4 years of college; and son, Wm Bruce Berkhof, age 3 (b. MI). William Sr. and Adrianne resided at Sand Lake, Kent County, Michigan on 1 April 1935.

 

2. Wife: Adrianne M. Vermaire

 

Born 1906. Died 25 March 1987, age 90; interred with William.

 

1920 US Census: Adrian Vermaire, age 59 (b. Netherlands; parents b. Netherlands) and employed as a cabinet maker in a furniture factory, was heading a household at 903 Baxter Street in the City of Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan. He immigrated to the US in 1888. The household also included his wife, Adriana Vermaire, age 56 (b. Netherlands; parents b. Netherlands), who immigrated to the US in 1888; son, Sam Vermaire, age 24 (b. MI), single, and employed as a printer in a print shop; daughter, Dena Vermaire, age 21 (b. MI), single, and employed as a stenographer in a flour mill; son, Abraham Vermaire, age 18 (b. MI), single, and employed as a biller for a wholesale grocery; and daughter, Adriana Vermaire, age 13 (b. MI).

 

1930 US Census: Adriana Vermaire, age 66 (b. Netherlands; parents b. Netherlands) and widowed, was heading a household at 827 Barter Street in the City of Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan. She immigrated to the US in 1889 (subsequently naturalized), and her residence was valued at $4,500. The household also included her daughter, Adriana M. Vermaire, age 23 (b. MI; parents b. Netherlands), single, and employed as a school teacher.
