Baptized 8 October 1598 at Paignton (on the shore of Tor Bay, about 7 miles north of Dartmouth), Devonshire, England.  Died 11 November 1675 at Springfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts; interred Chicopee Cemetery, Springfield, Massachusetts.  Immigrated from England to America in 1634 with his wife and 5 children (David, Catherine, Sarah, Henry, & Josiah).  Was at Roxbury, Massachusetts about 1638Took the Freeman’s Oath in June 1641 at Boston.  Probably resided at Dorchester.  Settled at Springfield, Massachusetts about 1642, where he was a Deacon in the Congregational Church.

(h. Frederick Nelson Ferry: Born 8 December 1847.  Married Louisa Moore at Westfield, Massachusetts.

 

(i. Worcester Avery Ferry: Married (?) at Wallingford, Connecticut and had the following children:

(j. Ella Orlena Ferry: Born 12 October 1852.  Married Charles Tuttle at Holyoke, Massachusetts.

 

(5. Solomon Chapin Ferry “Chapin”: Married Mary Lyman and resided at Chester, Ohio.  Soloman and Mary had the following children:

 

(a. Marcus Ferry: Married Laura (?) and had children.

 

(b. Louisa Parnell Ferry: Married twice, had children, and resided in Massachusetts.

 

(c. Julia Sophia Ferry.

 

(d. Emily Rosina Ferry: Married Delos Clark, resided at Hudson, Michigan, and had 1 child.

 

(e. Lyman Stuart Ferry: Married (?) and resided at Painesville, Ohio.

 

(f. Nelson Ferry: Married (?), resided at Chester, Ohio, and had children.

 

(g. Vandora Maria Ferry: Married (?), resided at Chester, Ohio, and had children.

 

d. Martin Chapin, Jr.: Born 2/27 July 1773/74 at Springfield, Massachusetts.  Died 14 February 1847.  Married Zeruiah Todd (d. 14 Feb 1847) on 27 January 1799 and had the following children:

 

(1. Lucinda Chapin: Born 10 May 1800.  Died 17 September 1800.

 

(2. Zeruah Chapin: Born 3 April 1802.  Died unmarried on 15 April 1860.

 

(3. Hervey Chapin: Born 23 June 1803.  Married Persis Clark Parsons (d. 22 Nov 1877 (age 77) on 31 December 1829 and had the following children:

 

(1) Persis P. Chapin: Born 5 October 1830.  Married Dwight Jewett of South Deerfield, Massachusetts on 27 May 1868 and resided at there.

 

(2) Sarah Jane Chapin: Born 15 March 1836.  Died 14 February 1841.

 

(3) Aurelia P. Chapin: Born 15 January 1838.

 

(4) Hervey Spencer Chapin: Born 7 September 1840.  Died 22 April 1848.

 

(5) Sarah Jane Chapin: Born 12 May 1842.  Married George W. Todd (d. 14 Apr 1884) on 27 July 1864.  Following George’s death Sarah resided with her father and taught school at Holyoke, Massachusetts.  Sarah and George had the following child:

 

(a) Son: Born about 1881.

 

(4. Martin Cooper Chapin: Born 1813.  Died 1885.  Married Sarah E. (C?).

 

(5. Lysander Chapin: Born 13 January 1811.  Married Mary Ann Cronk on 18 September 1842 and in 1886 resided at Hinsdale, New Hampshire.  Lysander and Mary Ann had the following children:

 

(a. Henry Chapin: Died in Pennsylvania.

 

(b. George Chapin: Resided at Simsbury, Connecticut, where he managed the train depot and was a telegraph operator.

 

e. Lucinda Chapin: Born 30 September 1776 (also seen: b. 1789/1788 at Springfield, MA).  Died, unmarried, 27 February 1796.

 

f. Reverend Walter Chapin: Born 15 January 1778/79 at Springfield, Massachusetts.  Died 22 July 1827 at Woodstock, Windsor County, Vermont.  Married Hannah Mosier on 7 March 1812/13 and had the following children:

 

(1. Nancy Parsons Chapin: Born 1813.  Married L. B. Spencer of Claremont, New Hampshire in 1830 and had the following children:

 

(a. Ann Spencer: Born 1831.  Died 1865.  Married Morgan Butler of Essex, Vermont in 1855.

 

(b. Leonard B. Spencer: Born 1837.  Married Sarah Rawson in 1864 and resided at New York City.

 

(c. Helen M. Spencer: Born 7 June 1842.  Died 10 November 1881 at Prague, Austria.  Married Reverend Albert W. Clark, pastor of the Gilead, Connecticut Congregational Church, in July 1868.  On 6 October  1872 both went as missionaries under the A.B.C.F.M. to Prague, Austria.

 

(d. Clara A. Spencer: Born 1844.  Died 1873.  Married Morgan Butler.

 

(e. E. Louise Spencer: Born 1849.  Married (?) Stafford in 1883 and resided at Barre, Vermont.

 

(f. Fannie A. Spencer: Born 1856.  Married (?) Marsh in 1882 and resided at Chicago, Illinois.

 

(2. Hannah Mosier Chapin: Born 1815.  Died 1860.  Married Reverend Thomas Gordon in 1841 and had the following children:

 

(a. Mary Gordon: Born 1842.  Died 1877 at Kalamazoo, Michigan.

 

(b. Jane Gordon: Born 1845.  Resided at Hoosack Falls, New York.

 

(c. Thomas W. Gordon: Born 1848.  Resided in Kansas.

 

(3. Sarah M. Chapin: Born 1817.  Died 1848.  Married N. A./S. Balch of Kalamazo, Michigan in 1839, and he still resided there in 1886.  Sarah and her husband had the following children:

 

(a. Anna H. Balch: Born 1841.  Married John Den Blyker of Kalamazoo, Michigan.

 

(b. Walter O. Balch: Born 1843.  Died 1878.

 

(4. Susan Cooper Chapin: Born 23 February 1819.  Married Lorenzo Kent of Woodstock, Vermont, who for years after Susan’s death resided with and cared for Susan’s widowed mother.  According to Mrs. Julia Foster Chapin, widow of Walter E. Chapin (Para (6., below): “Mr. Lorenzo Kent still resides in Woodstock, VT in the old house.  He took the best of care of mother Chapin in her old age, after all her own children were gone.”

(6. Walter E. Chapin: Born 18 February 1823.  Died 1838.  Married Julia Foster (b. 8 Nov 1835 at Springfield, MA), daughter of William Foster, on 14 October 1847 and had the following children:

 

(a. Edward R. Chapin: Born 7 March 1850.  Employed as superintendent of a salt mine in Livingstone County, New York.

 

(b. Walter H. Chapin: Born 6 March 1859.  Employed as a physician at Springfield, Massachusetts.

 

(c. Eliza Foster Chapin.

 

(7. Henry Martyn Chapin: Born 21 April 1825.  Died 1871.  Graduated from Dartmouth College, New Hampshire in 1850 and studied theology at Andover, Massachusetts.  In 1855 was Pastor of a Congregational Church at Ripon, Wisconsin, and in 1860 was preaching at Markesan, Marquette County, Wisconsin.  Married Mary A. Leonard of Sharon, Vermont in March 1851 and had the following children: (order uncertain)

 

(a. Mary E. Chapin: Born July 1857 at Ripon, Wisconsin.

 

(b. Edward Chapin: Born 1860.

Per Julia Foster Chapin in correspondence with Catherine Eliza Pease: “The family lived at Ripon awhile after the death of the Father, but I have heard indirectly that the family had gone farther west and that two of the children had died.”

 

(8. Robert Morrison: Born 1827.  Died 1850.

 

g. Reverend Justin Chapin: Born 14 June 1781 at Springfield, Massachusetts.  Died 14 July 1827.  Married Luranda Rogers on 7 November 1805/04 and had the following children:

 

(1. Samantha Chapin: Born 10 January 1807.  Died 2 April 1826.

 

(2. Elanora Chapin: Married Stephen Ball.

 

(3. Horace Chapin: Born 30 March 1810.  Died 16 May 1811.

 

(4. Diana Experience Chapin:  Married (1st) (?) Wolcott.  Married (2nd) Martin Ashley.

 

(5. Elizabeth Chapin: Died 1860.

 

(6. Warren Chapin: Drowned.
