5. Biographical notes:

Youngest son of John I (1) and Elizabeth (?) Drake of Windsor Township, Hartford County, Connecticut. Probably born in England between 1622 and 1625, he became one of the first settlers of Simsbury (known until 1670 by its Indian name, Massaco, a community that the records of the Connecticut General Assembly referred to as "an appendix to the town of Windsor." By way of background, in 1647 the General Court had directed purchase of the territory lying west and northwest of Windsor, but no action was taken. Some individuals did purchase property in that area as early as 1648, but it was not until 1680 that a deed was made with the Indians. By 1653 some lands in that area (soon to be Simsbury) were being cultivated.

When Simsbury was attacked and some forty dwellings burned by the Indians on 26 March 1676 in conjunction with the French and Indian War ("King Philip's war"), John Drake (2) fled with his family back to Windsor, residing there until perhaps 1679. After the close of the war John, his children, and many of the first settlers returned to Simsbury. However, they lived in constant fear and suffered from the ravages of the Indians for more than 30 years thereafter. Fortifications were erected and garrisons maintained much of that time, by order of the General Court. As a point of interest, John's son-in-law, John Higley, was captain in charge of the public soldiers for a season. (ref 11, p. 8)

In the year 1686 John Drake's ratable list was "one person, House land 4 acres, meadow 8 1/2 acres, East of ye River 10 acres, 4 cows: one of 1 year valued at 70/10/00." He purchased from the overseers of the estate of Mr. Ephraim Huit 3 1/2 acres (more or less) of land in the "Great Meadow" that Mr. Huit had claimed in 1684 by right of undisputed possession for twenty years or more. John also purchased a wood lot from Richard Lyman and eventually deeded it to his son, Enoch (11), in 1679. Later John received 40 acres of woodland from the town. At his death at Windsor his estate was valued at 225 pounds/02/02. His will, dated 12 September 1689 and proved 11 November 1689, follows:

"I John Drake Senior of Windsor being sick and weakly yet having understanding sound: doe make this my last will for the disposall of my estate.

"1. My will is that my debts be duly paid by my executor.

"2. I give to my son Job twenty shillings beside what I have allready given him.

"3. I give to my son Enoch Drake (11) that Lot in great meadow which was mr huits being about 3 ackers and halfe

"4. I give to my son Symon my house and homelot and barne and my wood Lott upon ye mill broock being about fifteen ackers.

"5. I give to my son Joseph the Remaynder of my Land on the east side the great River (Connecticut River).

"6. I give to my three daughters Lydia, Elizabeth, and Mindwell the Remaynder of my Land which is undisposed of in the Lot going to hartford known by the name of clay bridge allsoe I give to my daughter, Mary, that wood Lot being about fifteen ackers lying by my brother Job's pasture

"7. I give to my son John's 3 Children twenty pounds (that is to his son John ten pounds and the two daughters 5 pounds apiece) to be paid when they come to be of age; and if any die before they come to be of age, their part to be divided to them that do survive.

"8. It is my will and I do hereby give to my daughter, Ruth, and son, Symon Drake, that Land which I bought of Mr Howkins and Capt marshall - being about 5 ackers - upon the conditions following viz that they pay to my son John's three children the twenty pounds I have given them in currant Country pay as they come to be of age and what the land comes to more at eight pounds per acker shall be paid to all my daughters equally unless there be a nessessity for the discharging any of my debts and what of moveables are undisposed be equally divided amongst my daughters. Also, my will is that my 40 ackers of wood land which was granted me by the town shall be to mine or them of my children which will give most for it; and the effects or price of it be equally divided amongst all my children. Also, my will is that the several

parcels of land, above mentioned and given to my children, be and remain to them and their heirs forever and ever. Also, I do nominate and appoint my son, Job Drake, and my son-in-law, Samuel Barber, to be executors to this, my will, and for the confirmation of what is above written. I do hereunto set my hand this twelfth day of September 1689." Signed in the presence and witness of John Moore, Senior, John Drake, (III), and John Haill.

On 3 March 1706/7 Joseph Loomis, Senior, son of Joseph deceased, Nicholas Buckland, and James Loomis (all of Windsor Twp, Hartford Co., CT) deeded 27 1/2 acres of woodland to Daniel Loomis, Senior. The land was described as part of a lot bought by "our father-in-law, John Drake, deceased," from Richard Lyman and given to his three daughters: Lydia (late wife of Joseph Loomis, above), Elizabeth (late wife of Nicholas Buckland), and Mindwell (wife of James Loomis), by his last will.

6. Children:

a. John Drake, III (Gay #7) (1649-1689)

Born 14 September 1649 in Windsor Township, Hartford County, Connecticut. Died 7 July 1689 at Simsbury, Hartford County, Connecticut; interred there in the old burying ground. John's tombstone gave the year of death as 1688, a year earlier than recorded in the Town Records. However, the probating of his estate in 1689 agrees with the Town Records. John left an estate of 393 pounds/15/00; administration on the estate was granted to his widow, Mary on 11 November 1689.

John Drake, III married Mary Watson (b. 11 Jan 1651, d. 7 Aug 1693 at Simsbury, CT), daughter of Robert and Mary (Rockwell) Watson at Windsor on 20 March 1670/1. Of interest, Robert Watson was the brother of William Watson, who immigrated to America with John Drake I (1) aboard the "Mary & John" in 1630. John Drake III had a grant of land at Hop Meadow, Simsbury in 1667. Just when he took up residence upon it is not known, but the committee empowered to lay out the land in Massaco (Simsbury) voted in 1668 that if the owners of lots were not resident upon them by the following September, the lots would be forfeited. This John Drake's barn was near the site of the Congregational Church, and his name was given to a small stream known as "Drake's Brook" and to "Drake's Mill."

John and Mary (Watson) Drake had three children, all born at Simsbury:

(1. Mary Drake: (Gay #25) Born at Simsbury on 21 May 1674. Married Reverend Seth Shove (1667-1735), son of George Shove and Hopestill Newman of Taunton, Massachusetts. Seth graduated from Harvard College in 1687 and was ordained at Danbury, Connecticut in 1695, where he died 40 years later. Mary and Seth had two daughters:

(a. Dorothy Shove: Born 1 March 1694. Died 18 May 1695.

(b. Mary Shove: Baptized 8 November 1696 at Fairfield, Connecticut. Appears she married (1st) a man named Barnum, because Mary Barnum, daughter of Reverend Seth Shove of Danbury, married Josiah Minor of Woodbury, Connecticut on 9 October 1734. Mary died 30 March 1768. She and Josiah had the following children:

(1) Israel Minor.

(2) Olive Minor.

(3) Seth Minor.

(4) Jerusha Minor.

(5) Shove Minor.

(2. Hannah Drake: (Gay #26) Born in 1678 at Simsbury, Connecticut. Married John Hoyt, Jr. (b. 21 Jun 1669 at Norwalk, d. Mar 1746 at Danbury), son of John and Mary Hoyt, in 1693 at Norwalk, Connecticut. John Hoyt's will was probated at Danbury on 22 April 1746. In it he mentioned his wife and nine children. Hannah died after 1746. Hannah and John had the following children:

(a. Lieutenant David Hoyt: Born about 1710. Died approximately 1779/1803.

(b. Jonathan Hoyt: Married Rebecca Benedict. Died approximately 1779.

(c. John Hoyt, III: Married Hannah. Died approximately 1766.

(d. Drake Hoyt: Born 1717. Married Hannah Knapp (b. 1720). Died April 1805.

(e. Hannah Hoyt: Married before 1746 to a Curtis.

(f. Mary Hoyt: Married before 1746 to a Knapp.

(g. Rebecca Hoyt: Married before 1746 to a Peak.

(h. Eunice Hoyt: Married before 1746 to a Morris.

(3. John Drake, IV: (Gay #27) Born at Simsbury, Connecticut on 12 August 1688. Died there 8 February 1724/25. In 1709, at age 19 and residing in Danbury, Connecticut, chose his uncle, Deacon Job Drake of Windsor for his guardian. John married Mary Case (b. 15 Nov 1697, d. 12 Nov 1781), daughter of Samuel and Mary (Westover) Case, on 20 April 1721. John and Mary had two daughters:

(a. Mary Drake: (Gay #56) Born 4 February 1722 at Simsbury, Connecticut. Married (1st) Ebenezer Mills, son of Peter and Joanna (Porter) Mills on 8 July 1742 at Simsbury. Ebenezer, a licensed preacher, became insane and mysteriously disappeared about 1799. Mary and Ebenezer had the following children, all born at Simsbury:

(1) Mary Mills: Born 19 January 1743/44.

(2) Hannah Mills: Born 30 September 1745.

(3) Theodosia Mills #1: Born 8 March 1746/47. Died young.

(4) Peter Mills: Born 21 September 1748. Died in early manhood.

(5) John Mills: Born 21 September 1748. Died in early manhood.

(6) Dorcas Mills: Born 11 February 1750. Died 1 April 1814 at Sandisfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts.

(7) Theodosia Mills #2: Born 28 October 1751.

(8) Peter John Drake Mills "Drake": (Gay #125) Born 24 January 1756 at Simsbury, Connecticut. Died 23 April 1821, aged 65, at Sandisfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. Was a man of considerable prominence in his day. Married Sarah Gage (d. 15 Feb 1832, age 70, at Pittsfield; interred Sandisfield) on 23 September 1777 at Sandisfield, Massachusetts. He and Sarah had the following children: (order uncertain)

(a) Peter Mills: Born 8 March 1778. In 1822 resided in Amenia Township, Dutchess County, New York.

(b) Mary Mills: Born 31 October 1779. Died before 1822. Married (?) Betts.

(d) Theodosia Mills: Born 31 October 1783. Married Oliver Robbins.

(e) Laura Mills: Born 18 September 1785. Married Amos Bosworth.

(f) John Mills: Born 29 December 1787. Died 1862. Married Emily Foote on 23 November 1818. John was a Senator for Hampden County, Massachusetts.

(g) Hannah Mills: Born 3 February 1790. Married Jared Ingersoll, Jr. of Pittsfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts.

(h) Drake Mills: Born 3 April (?). Died 15 February 1863, age 71, in New York. Married Sarah L. Kilborn on 8 September 1823.

(i) Otis Mills: Born 8 May 1794. Died 23 October 1869. Married Sarah Jane (?) and resided at Charleston, South Carolina.

(j) Theodore Sedgwick Mills: Born 1 August (?). Resided at Charleston, South Carolina.

(k) Samuel Mills: Born 21 July (?).

(l) Edmund Randolph Mills: Born 22 April (?). Was a minor in 1822.

(m) Celestia Mills: Born 26 August (?). Baptized in 1816. Married Ruel Smith of New York on 12 August 1824.

(b. Hannah Drake: Born 8 February 1723/4. Died October 1724.

Mary (Case) Drake married for a second time to Josiah Alvord.

b. "Deacon" Job Drake (Gay #8) (1651-1733)

Born 15 June 1651 in Windsor Township, Hartford County, Connecticut. Died there 19 April 1733. Married Elizabeth Alvord/Alford (b. 21 Sep 1651), daughter of Benedict (Benedictus) and Jane (Newton) Alvord, on 20 March 1670/1/2 at Windsor. He lived in East Windsor (on the east side of the "Great River," as the Connecticut River was usually called in the old records) and was the first Deacon of the Church there. By profession he was a tailor. He owned several tracts of land, and in 1711 received a grant of land on the east side of the sheep commons in exchange for land which he gave for a burying ground. Reference 24 (p. 208) and reference 132 (p. 70) suggest Job was from Westfield, Massachusetts. In 1686 his ratable list was "one person, house land 4 acres, East ye river twelve acres 1 horse, 2 oxen, 3 cows (1 of 2 years old; 1 of 1 year old)" valued at 66 pounds/00. Job and Elizabeth had 5 children, all born in Windsor Township:

(1. Jonathan Drake: (Gay #28) Born 4 January 1672/73 in Windsor Township, Hartford County, Connecticut. Died 1716. Married, as her 1st husband, Esther "Hester" Bissell (b. 10 Sep 1679, d. 25 Dec 1755), daughter of Thomas and Esther (Strong) Bissell, on 14 April 1708 and had three children, all born at Windsor:

(a. Benjamin Drake: Born 1 February 1709/10. Died 28 October 1730.

(b. Esther Drake: Born 4 May 1712. Died 20 June 1730.

(c. Eunice Drake: (Gay #57) Born 4 February 1715/16.

Esther (Bissell) Drake married (2nd) Deacon Joseph Skinner (d. 19 Jan 1756) on 21 August 1718 and had several additional children. She died in 1755.

(2. Elizabeth Drake: (Gay #29) Born 2/4 November 1675 in Windsor Township, Hartford County, Connecticut. Married "Sarjant" Joseph Rockwell (b. abt 1670, d. 26 Jun 1733, age 63, at East Windsor), son of Samuel Rockwell and Mary Norton, on 23 January 1694 at East Windsor. Elizabeth and Joseph had six children, all born at Windsor:

(a. Joseph Rockwell, Jr.: Born 23 November 1695. Died 1746. Had at least one son:

(1) Samuel Rockwell: Born 1728. Died 1794. Head of the firm of "Samuel Rockwell & Sons" of Colebrook.

Married Hannah Burnham (b. 1686, was living 15 Nov 1746), daughter of Samuel and Mary (Cadwell) Burnham, on 9/17 October 1717 at Windsor. Jeremiah and Hannah had the following children:

(3) Abial Drake: (Gay #128) Born about 1753. Died 19 April 1821, age 67. On 1 August 1820 was age 66 when he applied for a pension. Married Mary/Mercy Sadd (d. 11 Apr 1826), daughter of Matthew Sadd, and had the following children (which may include the Matthew Drake, son of Abial, who was employed as a blacksmith and may have moved to Baltimore, Maryland; and the Naomi Drake, daughter of Abial, who married Joseph Williams):

Moved from Windsor, Connecticut to Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and from there to Pennsylvania. Married Frances Sexton (b. 29 Dec 1793, d. 1 Oct 1837 at Lewisburg, PA) on 12 February 1812 at Pittsfield, Massachusetts and had the following children:

(4) Jerusha Drake: (Gay #129) Born about 1756. Died 26 March 1832, age 76. Married Levi Goodwin (Bapt. 8 May 1757, d. 24 Apr 1836, age 78), son of John and Dorothy (Pitkin) Goodwin, and had the following children:

(a) Anna Goodwin: Baptized 30 July 1780. Died 21 May 1858. Married (1st) Horace Bigelow Olmsted (b. 2 Apr 1871 at East Hartford, CT, d. 29 Aug 1817) on 2 September 1804. Married (2nd) Salmon Phelps on 24 October 1825.

(b) Stephen Goodwin: Born 4 August 1782.

(d) Horace W. Goodwin: Born 3 July 1798.

(e) Israel Goodwin: Baptized 19 August 1798.

(5) Noadiah Drake: (Gay #130) Baptized 19 August 1764. Died 8 January 1815, age 50; interred South Windsor Township, Hartford County, Connecticut. Married (?) and had children, including:

(a) Austin Drake: Born about 1808. Died 26 November 1815, age 7 (at the time, their youngest son.

(6) Eli Drake: (Gay #131) Baptized 30 April 1769 in East Windsor Township, Hartford County, Connecticut. Died August 1855 at Pomfrets, Chautauqua County, New York. Moved to Fredonia, New York, and from there to Pomfrets, New York.

1850 U.S. Census: Eli Drake, age 77, was the head of a farming household in Pomfret Township, Chautauqua County, New York. He was born in Connecticut and his real estate was valued at $2,000. His wife, Ann, age 64 and born in New Jersey, was also a member of the household. (ref 35bv)

Eli Drake married (1st) Zerviah Gaylord (b. 5 Mar 1775), daughter of Abiel and Mehitable (Prior) Gaylord of East Windsor. He apparently married (2nd) Ann (?). Eli had the following children:

(b) Lathrop Drake: (Gay #241) Married Henrietta (?).

(d) Eli Goodwin Drake. (Gay #243) Born 6 October 1810 in East Windsor Township, Hartford County, Connecticut. Died 12 January 1856 at Columbus, Ohio. Married Mary Young (b. 1813, d. 12 Jun 1875 at Columbus, OH), daughter of James and Eleanor (?) Young, on 24 July 1833 at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and had the following children:

He bequeathed his interest in the "Western Lands" to his three children and granddaughter, Eunice.

c. Hannah Drake (Gay #9) (1653-1694)

Born 6/8 August 1653 in Windsor Township, Hartford County, Connecticut. Died 4 August 1694 at Simsbury, Connecticut. Married, as his 1st wife, Captain John Higley (b. abt 1649 in Firmly, Surrey County, England, d. 25 Aug 1714, age 66, at Simsbury; interred there in the center of the old cem.), son of Jonathan Higley and Katherine Brewster (dau of Rev John Brewster and ancestor of the "Mayflower" Brewsters) of Simsbury, Connecticut, on 9 November 1671 at Windsor. John Higley had emigrated to America approximately 1666 and was the ancestor of all who bore that name in the early years of America. Hannah and John remained in Windsor Township for a number of years, then moved to Simsbury, Hartford County, Connecticut, where Captain John Higley, as he was called, was one of the original seven proprietors and a prominent man of the town. He was captain in charge of the public soldiers of Simsbury for a season, Deputy to the General Assembly many times, was Justice of the Peace, and his name appears in the records as performing marriages. He was active in developing the copper mines in that area, although a later Higley was associated with Higley Coppers.

Of interest, her son, grandson, and great-grandson were both Governors of Connecticut. Hannah and Joseph had the following children:

(a. Joseph Trumbull, III: Born 27 March 1705. Married Sarah Buckley on 20 November 1727. In 1731 he sailed from New London, Connecticut for London, England on a ship whose entire cargo was owned by the Trumbull family. In June 1733 Joseph and the ship were lost at sea. He and Sarah had 2 children.

(b. Governor Jonathan Trumbull: Born 12 October 1710. Died 17 August 1785. Married Faith Robinson of Duxbury on 9 December 1736.

The death of his brother, Joseph, and the loss of the ship in 1733 caused great anguish and financial losses to the Trumbull family. It caused his father to become unfit for business, so Jonathan was called home to take over. He and his mother picked up the pieces and Jonathan simultaneously went into politics, first as a Representative in 1733 at the age of 23, rising through the years to become Governor of Connecticut in 1770. In that capacity he was called "Brother Jonathan." He was elected Governor annually until 1783, when he finally declined to run again. As a note of interest, George Washington consulted with Jonathan constantly during the Revolution.

Jonathan and Faith had 6 children, including Jonathan Trumbell, Jr., who was also Governor of Connecticut. Jonathan, Jr. married Eunice Backus and had a daughter, Harriet, who married Professor Benjamin Silliman.

(c. Mary Trumbull: Born 21 August 1713. Married Joshua Fitch and had 3 children.

(d. Hannah Trumbull: Born and died 1715.

(e. Hannah Trumbull: Born 18 September 1717. Married Joseph Sherman on 25 February 1735. Hannah died 7 November 1736.

(9. Doctor Samuel Higley: Born about 1687 at Simsbury, Connecticut. Married Abigail (d. 5 Aug 1748). Samuel attended Yale College and became a noted man of science. He was one of the first licensed medical practitioners in America in 1717. In addition, he invented a process for making steel for which the legislatures granted a patent, the first for that purpose applied in America. He owned and operated one of the copper mines in Simsbury and manufactured "Higley Coppers," the first copper coins put into circulation in America. In circulation until the revolution, those coins are now rare; some are held by the Connecticut Historical Society and the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia. Samuel was lost at sea in 1737. He and Abigail had the following children: (Of interest, in 1892 some of their descendants were resided in New York and at Ashtabula, Ohio.)

(a. Jonathan Higley: Born 21 June 1721. Married Mary Thompson (b. 1721), daughter of Reverend Edward Thompson. Jonathan drowned 18 July 1771. He and Mary had 2 children from 1747 to 1750.

Samuel had first married Mary Coggins/Coggens/Coussens (d. 19 May 1676) on 1 December 1670 and had sons Thomas Barber (b. 7 Oct 1671, d. interred 31 Oct 1673) and Samuel Barber, Jr. (b. 26 Jan 1673). Samuel, Sr.'s will was dated 21 February 1708/9 and proved 4 April 1709; his inventory was 598 pounds/04/10. General Washington detailed him with a Major Kent of New Hampshire "to watch the movements of the British and report to him privately." David and Mary had 3 children from 1755 to 1772.

(j. Sergeant Noah Barber: Born 8 May 1735 in Windsor Township, Hartford County, Connecticut. Died 13 March 1822 at East Windsor. He was present at the Lexington alarm. Married Sibyl Booth (d. 16 Aug 1815) of East Windsor on 28 October 1761 and had 2 children from 1762 to 1764.

f. Simon/Symon Drake (Gay #12) (1659-1711) (no mention in ref 127)

Born 28 October 1659 in Windsor Township, Hartford County, Connecticut. Died there 21 December 1711; his estate was probated in 1683, when his daughter, Hannah, was said to be 18 years old. Simon's home lot was between Lieutenant Job Drake's and Jeremiah Alvord's in Windsor, near the center of town. He received, by the will of his father, his home, home lot, a barn and a wood lot on Mill Brook. He sold a part of his property to Jeremiah Alvord, retaining 4 1/2 acres with the buildings. On 29 July 1700 he mortgaged this lot to Alexander Allyn, and the boundaries were "my house and home lot on the south side the river lot bounded North on the highway that leads towards Greenfield, West on Jeremiah Alford's home lot, East on Job Drake's home lot." (ref 158a) This mortgage was released to his daughter, Hannah Loomis on 5 May 1721, as Administratrix of Simon's estate.

Of interest, Lieutenant Job Drake and Simon Drake had a controversy about the line dividing their lots, and they settled it by agreeing to pay each other ten pounds.

Simon Drake married Hannah Mills (b. 1665), daughter of Simon and Mary (Buel) Mills, on 15 December 1687 at Windsor, Connecticut. Of interest, at the distribution of the Simon Mills' estate in 1691, Hannah's husband, Simon Drake, signed. Simon and Hannah had the following children:

Joseph Loomis, Jr. had immigrated to America from Bristol, England. He moved to Windsor about 1639 and was admitted to the church there on 11 October 1640. Joseph, Jr. was frequently on important committees and was given several appointments that indicated confidence by his fellow settlers in his integrity and capacity. Joseph and Lydia had the following children:

(1. Joseph Loomis, IV #1: Born 28 November 1682. Died 19 March 1683.

His first wife, to whom he was married on 14 April 1668, was Martha Wakefield of New Haven, Connecticut. Martha was the mother of six children, only one of whom lived beyond infancy:

Martha (Wakefield) Buckland died 28 October 1684 in Windsor Township, Hartford County, Connecticut. Nicholas and Elizabeth had the following children:

Nicholas Buckland married for a third time in 1698 to Hannah Smith. Nicholas Buckland, "Being far advanced in years," made his will 7 June 1728. He died 24 August 1728, age 82, in Windsor Township, Hartford County, Connecticut and was interred in the Windsor cemetery. Nicholas Buckland left an estate of 438 pounds/12/07 to his four daughters.

Born 29 January 1665/6/7 in Windsor Township, Hartford County, Connecticut. A direct ancestor of Almond Henry Drake (19) because her granddaughter, Hannah Wilson, married Josiah Drake (13). Mary married Thomas Marshall (b. 18 Feb 1663, d. 8 Nov 1735), son of Captain Samuel Marshall (emigrant) and Mary Wilton, on 3 March 1685/6 at Windsor. He was Deacon of the Congregational Church at Windsor. Mary died at Windsor on 2 December 1728. Thomas remarried to a woman named Elizabeth, who survived him.

The will of Thomas Marshall (husband of Mary Drake), dated 5 June 1734 and proved 8 December 1735, mentions "My present wife Elizabeth, son Thomas, son Samuel, to have land in Torrington. The children of my son John deceased, Ichabod Marshall and Eunice Marshall, my son Daniel Marshall - my house and homestead. My grand-children Esther, Catherine and Ann Fowler, or to their father, My daughter, Mary Wilson, and my daughter, Eunice Marshall. My son, Samuel Drake, to be Executor."

Note: According to reference 136 (Vol IV p. 85) Noah married Ruth Cook (b. 1723), daughter of Josiah Cook, Jr. and Joanna Relay (Reed), on 19 January 1748 and had a son, Josiah Marshall (b. 5 Nov 1749, d. 13 Nov 1749). According to reference 77 (p. 22) Noah died 22 December 1712, making him too young to have been married.

(9. Reverend Daniel Marshall: Born 1705 in Windsor Township, Hartford County, Connecticut. Died 2 November 1784. Married (1st) Hannah Drake (b. 1717), daughter of Enoch Drake, Jr. and Elizabeth Barber, on 11 November 1742. It is interesting to note that Daniel upset the orthodox church of Windsor by preaching the Baptist doctrines. The degree of discontent with his conduct was shown when Hannah died. People assembled for the funeral, but the church pastor refused to perform the normal service because of Daniel's Baptist practices. As a result, the people left and Daniel had to bury Hannah by himself (ref 137, Vol 2, p. 468 and ref 11, p. 67). Daniel and Hannah had one son and apparently were step parents of their niece and nephew, Eunice and Ichabod (children of Daniel's brother, John):

Samuel was a Lieutenant in 1740, a Captain in 1744, a Deputy in 1748, and a Justice of Hartford from 1749 to 1770. Eunice died 7 May 1792. She and Samuel had the following children:

Born in Windsor Township, Hartford County, Connecticut on 10 November 1671, she married James Loomis, son of Joseph, Jr. and Mary (Chauncey) Loomis, in 1696 and they resided at East Windsor and Colton, Connecticut. James was born 31 October 1669 in Windsor, Connecticut. He moved to East Windsor and later to Bolton, Tolland County, Connecticut, where James died 29 December 1750. Mindwell died at Bolton on 1 March 1735/6. They had the following children:

(1. Mindwell Loomis: Born 28 December 1697.

(2. James Loomis, Jr.: Born 27 January 1699/1700. Died 9 January 1784.

(3. Henry Loomis: Born 14 September 1701. Married Ruth Bidwell (Stanley)(b. 1704), daughter of John Bidwell and Hannah Pitkin (ref 101, p. 143 also suggests she could have been Ruth Stanley, widow of James Bidwell). Ruth died 27 February 1755 in east Windsor Township, Hartford County, Connecticut. Henry died 9 August 1778. Henry and Ruth resided in Windsor and had the following children:

(b. Ruth Loomis: Born 24 August 1729. Married Ebenezer Holman (d. 9 Mar 1795), son of Samuel Holman and Katherine Roberts, on 1 November 1763. Ruth died 17 June 1770. She and Ebenezer had no children.

(c. Jerusha Loomis: Born 10 July 1731. Married a Sprauge.

(d. Hannah Loomis: Born 22 October 1733. Died in 1815.

(e. Gideon Loomis: Born 30 December 1735 in Windsor Township, Hartford County, Connecticut. Married Hannah Booth (d. 31 May 1817). Gideon served in the Revolutionary War and died 7 May 1802. He and Hannah had 3 children from 1767 to 1771.

(f. James Loomis: Born 11 March 1737. Died 28 October 1738.

(g. Mindwell Loomis: Born 3 November 1739. Married Titus King, Jr. of east Windsor Township, Hartford County, Connecticut. Mindwell died 1 November 1784. She and Titus had 3 children.

(c. Christiana Loomis: Born 5 February 1736. Married Captain Jared Cone (d. 1 Apr 1807), son of Stephen Cone and Mary Hungerford, on 19 September 1754. Christiana died 6 October 1801. She and Jared had 7 children.

Matthew Loomis married for a second time (as her third husband) to widow Martha (Perkins)(Todd) Lathrop (b.1705, d.1781), daughter of Joseph Perkins and Martha Morgan, on 29 May 1739. Martha's first husband was Thomas Todd and her second husband was Soloman Lathrop.

Matthew was an Ensign in 1752, a Lieutenant in 1758 during the invasion of Canada, and a Captain in 1761. He died 31 July 1764 at Bolton, Connecticut. Matthew and Martha had six children:

(d. Martha Loomis: Born 2 March 1740. Married (1st) Lemuel White (b. 1736, d. 1780), son of Captain Joel White and Ruth Dart, on 12 June 1760. Married (2nd) Timothy Cheney (d. 27 Sep 1795, age 65). Martha died 28 January 1803 at Bolton. She had 11 children.

(e. Levi Loomis: Born 17 January 1742. Married Allis Clarke of Coventry on 3 September 1772 at Bolton. Levi died 8 October 1793 at Bolton. He and Allis had 9 children from 1773 to 1793.

(f. Mary Loomis: Born 29 January 1745. Married Eliphalet Hendee (d. 28 Feb 1827), son of Asa Hendee, on 1 June 1773. Mary died 21 November 1824 at Andover. She and Eliphalet had 5 children.

(f. Jonathan Loomis: Born 16 December 1753 at Coventry. Married (1st) Martha Blackman. Married (2nd) Mrs. Patience Pelton. Jonathan served for 7 years in the Revolutionary War and was at Bunker Hill. About 1804 he moved his family from Pittsfield, Massachusetts to Champion, New York. He died 12 December 1832 at Champion, New York. Jonathan had 8 children from 1779 to 1796. Three of his sons served in the War of 1812.

1810 U.S. Census: Jonathan Loomis headed a household in Champion Township, Jefferson County, New York. The household included 1 male age 10 to 16; 1 male age 16 to 26; 1 male age 26 to 45; 1 male over age 45; 1 female age 10 to 16; and 1 female age 26 to 45.

1820 U.S. Census: Jonathan Loomis headed a farming household in Champion. The household also included a female. Both were over age 45.

1830 U.S. Census: No Jonathan Loomis listed as head of a household in Jefferson County, New York. Non-heads of households are not distinguishable until the 1850 U.S. Census.

(g. Eleazer Loomis: Born 2 May 1756. Married Mary Townsend (d. 3 Dec 1840). Eleazer moved to Paine's Mountain, Vermont. He hung himself 7 December 1810 and was judged to have been insane at the time. Eleazer and Mary had 7 children from 1783 to 1795.

(10. Lois Loomis: Born 26 October 1715. Married James Wright (b. 1695, d. 1773), son of Thomas Wright and Esther Andrus of Wethersfield, about 1747. Lois died 31 January 1789. Lois and James had four or five children.

Born 26 June 1674 in Windsor Township, Hartford County, Connecticut, Joseph married (1st) Ann Morton, daughter of William and Mary (Burnham) Morton (Note: ref 137a, p. 179 states Joseph married Ann Foster). Ann was born in 1679 and died 28 August 1716/7, age 38. Joseph was a weaver by profession and married for a second time to Sarah (Fitch) Stoughton, widow of John Stoughton (d. 1712). John Stoughton had married Sarah Fitch on 23 January 1689. In 1731 Sarah Drake was cited to appear in Court. Sarah had applied to have her dower (interest in the real estate of a deceased husband given by law to his widow during life), as Stoughton's widow, given to her. She died 7 January 1745/6. Joseph Drake died 14 January 1754 at East Windsor.

Ann died 7 July 1726, childless. They had resided in Windsor, Coventry, and Tolland. Ebenezer married for a second time on 28 January 1729/30 to Sarah Pinney (b. 21 Nov 1703, d. 14 Aug 1776, age 69), daughter of Nathaniel Pinney and Martha Thrall. Ebenezer and Sarah moved to Coventry and had six children. Ebenezer died at Coventry on 12 May 1779.
