Emery Reunions

Origin of the surname “Emery:”

Derived from the name of a Gothic King Emmerick from the 4th century A.D.  When the Goths overran the Roman Empire, the name was spread through many countries.  In Italy it is Amergol; in France it is Amre; in England it is Emery or Emory.  The name was carried to England by Gilbert d’Amre, a Norman knight of Tours, who fought under William the Conqueror of Hastings.  Gilbert’s name appears in three of the lists in Battle Abbey.  William gave Gilbert the Barony of Thackingdon, near Oxford on the Thames.  The church Gilbert built there is still standing.

    2. On 15 June 1913 [John A. Biles] took dinner with Hannah Higley, a daughter of Nathan Emery, a cabinetmaker and undertaker, son of Jacob Emery, Silver Lake, Pennsylvania.  Being her 87th birthday in company of Nathan Emery and family.  She thinks that Irvine Emery of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has the Nathan Emery family Bible and records.  Her grandfather, Jacob Emery, lived near Centerville, N.J.  Mrs. Higley was in Florida from 1875 to 1902.  Tradition as told by Mrs. Higley: three Emery brothers came from England, one of them died on the way.  She thinks her grandfather was one of them.  He gave the lot at Centerville for a Church - also a mortgage of $1,000 on the James Decker farm, the interest to support the church and to use 100 years.

“John Emery, son of John and Agnes Emery, of Romsey, Hauts, England, was born in England, September 29, 1598.  He sailed from Southampton, April 3, 1635 with his brother Anthony in the ship ‘James’ of London, William Cooper, master, their wives and one or two children each probably with them.  He landed in Boston, June 3, 1635 and went soon after to Newbury, where John Sr. had a town grant of half an acre for a house lot.  John Emery was fined December 22, 1637 by the town, twenty shillings for enclosing ground not laid out or owned by the town, contrary to a town order, and on February 1, 1638 the town granted him that part of ground which was already enclosed.  He was made freeman June 2, 1641 and recorded as one of the ninety-one freeholders of the town Dec 2, 1642; in the same year he was appointed, with three others, to make a valuation of all the property in the town, for the purpose of proportioning each man’s share in the new division.  On March 16, 1663, John Emery was ‘presented to the court at Ipswich by Henry Jaques, Constable of Newbury, for entertaining travelers and Quakers May 5th, 1663; his presentiment for entertaining Quakers was referred unto next court.’  The next court fined him four pounds, costs, and fees for entertaining strangers.  The evidence given in the case was: ‘yt two men Quakers wr entertained very kindly to bed and table and John Emerie shok ym by ye hand and bid ym welcome.’  Also, that the witness heard John Emery and his wife say that he had entertained Quakers and that he would not put them from his house and used argument for the lawfulness of it.  John Emery in May 1663 petitioned the general court for the remission of his fine.  His petition was signed by the selectmen of the town and fifty of the citizens.  The fine was not remitted.

“He was also prominent in the case of Lieutenant Robert Pike, refusing to recognize the authority of the court to deprive him and his neighbors of the right of petition.  In the famous ecclesiastical difficulties John Emery was a member of the Woodmen party.  April 10, 1644 he had a grant from the town of twenty-two acres and five rods being his own and Henry Almer’s portion of dividends, land in the great field beyond the new town.  He was selectman, 1661; fence viewer, 1666; grand juryman the same year; jury of trials, 1672; appointed to carry votes to Salem in 1676.

Notes from Marian Biles:

1. “I remember “Aunt Lib” and “Aunt Ella.”  Lib’s daughter, Edna Nevil, and Dad (Clarence Emery Biles) and some of the other Emery cousins could “cut up” together like you wouldn’t believe.  Dad was usually pretty quiet and calm and correct.  She (Edna) came to our house several times.”

Of interest, the 1st Reunion of the descendants of Jacob Ross and Sarah Ann (Ennis) Emery was held 5 July 1926 at the home of W. Emery Kingsley.
