Origin of the surname “Gamble:”

Of Scottish origin.  According to William Starrett, husband of Mary Gamble (dau of Thomas Gamble, gen 5, below): "The Gambles [his father-in-law's family] were among the earliest of the Scotch family to take refuge in Ireland."  Many Scots fled their country to escape religious persecution.
