Born 9 July 1848 at Haggerston St. Mary, England; baptized there 3 September 1848.  Died 19 September 1919 at Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan; interred there.  Immigrated to the US in 1884; subsequently became a naturalized citizen.

 

1900 US Census: John Grace, age 52 (b. Jul 1848 in England; parents b. England) and employed as a day laborer, was heading a household at 370 Canford Avenue in the City of Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan.  The household also included his wife of 31 years, Louisa Grace, age 51 (b. Jan 1849 in England; father b. England; mother b. Scotland), who had had 10 children, 9 of whom were still alive; son, John Grace, age 27 (b. Oct 1872 in England) and employed as an iron worker; son, Charles Grace, age 22 (b. Mar 1877 in England) and employed by a chemical works; son, William Grace, age 20 (b. Aug 1879 in England) and employed as an iron worker; son, Robert Grace, age 18 (b. Sep 1881 in England) and employed as a brass worker; son, George Grace, age 16 (b. Jan 1884 in England) and employed as a time? keeper; son, Edward Grace, age 11 (b. Jun 1888 in MI); and daughter, Ellen Grace, age 6 (b. Mar 1894 in MI).

1.  Biographical notes:

 

Born 27 January 1884 at London, England.  Died 20 April 1970 in Taylor Township (also seen: Detroit), Wayne County, Michigan; interred there in Woodmere Cemetery.  Immigrated to the US in 1885.  When married was employed as an iron worker.  Subsequently employed as a machinist.

 

1910 US Census: George Grace, age 26 (b. England) and employed as a carpenter in a carpenter ship, resided in the household headed by his father-in-law, George W. Marshall, age 53 (b. MI; parents b. England) and employed as a machinist in a machine shop, at 333 Clark Avenue in the City of Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan.  George Grace immigrated to the US in 1885, was subsequently naturalized, and was married once - to Lavinia Grace for 2 years.  The household also include his mother-in-law, Lavinia Marshall, age 53 (b. MI; father b. England; mother b. Scotland), who had been married once - to George W. Marshall for 32 years and had had 2 children, both still alive; wife, Lavinia J. Grace [very legible - looks like a J., not an I.], age 26 (b. MI), who had married once - to George Grace for 2 years and had had 1 child, still alive; and daughter, Ruth L. Grace, age 1 year and 1 month (b. MI).

 

1920 US Census: George Grace, age 35 (b. England; parents b. England) and employed as a government mail carrier, who immigrated to the US in 1884 and was subsequently naturalized, resided in the household headed by his mother-in-law, Mrs. Lavinia Marshel, age 63 (b. MI; father b. England; mother b. Scotland) and widowed, at 333 Clark Avenue in the City of Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan.  The household also included his wife, Lavinia I. Grace, age 36 (b. MI; parents b. MI); daughter, Ruth L. Grace, age 10 (b. MI); son, Oren B. Grace, age 4 (b. MI); son, Arthur M. Grace, age 2 (b. MI); and daughter, Gene L. Grace, age 5 months (b. MI).

 

1930 US Census: George Grace, age 46 (b. England; parents b. England) and employed as a mechanic in a garage, was heading a household at 8869 Whitlock Street in the City of Dearborn, Wayne County, Michigan.  He immigrated to the US in 1883 and was subsequently naturalized.  His home was valued at $5,500.  The household also included his wife of 23 years, Lavinia Grace, age 46 (b. MI; parents b. MI); daughter, Ruth Grace, age 21 (b. MI) and single; son, Oren Grace, age 14 (b. MI) and single; son, Arthur Grace, age 12 (b. MI); daughter, Jean Grace, age 10 (b. MI); and daughter, Dorothy Grace, age 7 (b. MI).

 

1940 US Census: George Grace, age 56 (b. England) and employed as a back hand in an auto factory, was heading a household on Martinville Drive in Taylor Township, Wayne County, Michigan.  He had completed 8th grade, and on 1 April 1935 he and all other members of the household had resided in the City of Dearborn, Wayne County, Michigan.  The household also included his wife, Levinia Grace, age 56 (b. MI), who had completed 2 years of high school; son, Oren Grace, age 25 (b. MI), single, and employed as a laborer in an auto factory, who had completed 4 years of high school; son, Arthur Grace, age 22 (b. MI), single, and employed as a tool and die maker in an auto factory, who had completed 8th grade; daughter, Jean Grace, age 20 (b. MI), single, and employed as an office girl, who had completed 3 years of high school; and daughter, Dorothy Grace, age 17 (b. MI) and single, who had completed 2 years of high school.

 

1942 WWII Draft Registration: George Grace, age 58 (b. 27 Jan 1884 at London, England) and employed by Ford Motor Company, Dearborn, Wayne County, Michigan, resided at 9400 Mortenview Drive, Dearborn Route 5, Taylor Township, Wayne County, Michigan.  He named Lavinia Grace of the same address as a person who will always know his address.

Born 28 November 1883 in Michigan; daughter of George William and Lavinia (Wilkinson) Marshall.  Died 22 December 1951 at Redford, Wayne County, Michigan; interred with George.  Married George Grace on 16 November 1907 at Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, witness by her parents.

Oren Bruce Grace: Born 18 April 1915 in Michigan.  Died 12 October 2012, age 97, in Michigan.  Completed 4 years of high school.  Single and employed as a shipping and receiving clerk before World War II.  Veteran of World War II; enlisted 31 July 1941 at Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan for service in the Philippines (service #: 36124744).  Resided last in Florida.

 

c. Arthur Marshall Grace: Born 1 July/August 1917 in Michigan.  Died 30 March 1999, age 82, at Dearborn, Wayne County, Michigan.

 

d. Jean L. Grace: Born about 1920 in Michigan.

 

e. Dorothy Grace: Born about 1923 in Michigan.

Born 12 January 1909 at Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan.  Died 27 May 1994 at Mount Clemens, Macomb County, Michigan.  Married George Lorenzo Cool, descendant # 1 of generation 12 of the Descendants of Louisa Mehitable (Drake) Cool on 21 April 1930 at Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio.
