Born 16 September 1791 in German Flatts Township, Herkimer County, New York.  Died 10 April 1864 at Evans Mills, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Employed there as a farmer.

 

1840 US Census: Leonard, age 40 to 50, was heading a household in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included 1 male age 10 to 15; 2 males age 15 to 20; 1 female age 5 to 10; 2 female age 10 to 15; and 1 female age 40 to 50.

 

1850 US Census: Leonard, age 58, b. NYS, employed as a farmer, was heading a household in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included (presumably) his wife, Catharine Helmer (age 58, b. NYS); Robert Helmer (age 35); daughter, Patsy Helmer (age 26); son, Philip Helmer (age 25); daughter, Polly Helmer (age 23); son, Benjamin Helmer (age 18); daughter, Louisa Helmer (age 16); and son, Charles Patrick Helmer (age 9).

 

1860 US Census: Leonard, age 64, and his wife, Catherine (age 64) were living a household headed by his son, Peter Helmer (age 37, employed as a farmer), in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included Peter’s wife, Catherine Helmer (age 36); son, Roger Helmer (age 17); daughter, Eugena Helmer (age 16); son, Daniel Helmer (age 14); and son, Leonard Helmer (age 6).  All were born in New York State.

Born 15 May 1792 at German Flatts, Herkimer County, New York; daughter of Johan Jacob (b. 1768, d. 1828) and Helena Catharine (McCombs) Harter (b. 1766, d. 1833).  Died 29 July 1866 at Evans Mills, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Married Leonard Helmer on 17 January 1809 at Herkimer, Herkimer County, New York.

Born 28 December 1822 in Herkimer County, New York.  Died 13 April 1887 at Evans Mills, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York; interred there.  Employed as a farmer in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.

 

1860 US Census: Peter Helmer, age 37 and employed as a farmer, resided with his family in the household headed by Simon Keller, age 32 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, in LeRay Township (Evans Mills Post Office), Jefferson County, New York.  Peter's real estate was valued at $5,200, and his personal property was valued at $900.  The household also included Peter’s wife, Catherine Helmer, age 36 (b. NYS); son, James Helmer, age 17 (NYS); daughter, Emma Helmer, age 16 (b. NYS); son, Daniel Helmer, age 14 (b. NYS); son, Leonard Helmer, age 6 (b. NYS); father, Leonard Helmer, age 69 (b. NYS); and mother, Catherine Helmer, age 64 (b. NYS).  Simon Keller's real estate was valued at $1,800, and his personal property was valued at $250.  Simon's household also included his wife, Caroline Keller, age 27 (b. Herkimer Co., NY) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He had been married once, and his frame residence was valued at $400.  The household also included his wife, Cathern Helmer, age 46 (b. Jefferson Co., NY), who had been married once and had had 4 children; son, James Helmer, age 23 (b. Jefferson Co., NY) and employed as a farmer; daughter, Emma Helmer, age 21 (b. Jefferson Co., NY); and son, Leonard Helmer, age 11 (b. Jefferson Co., NY).  Of interest, the household headed by Reuben Keller, age 47 (b. Jefferson Co., NY) and employed as a farmer, was enumerated next door.

 

1870 US Census: Peter Helmer, age 48 (b. NYS) and employed as , resided in the household headed by his son, James Helmer, age 27 (b. NYS) in New York.

 

1875 NYS Census: Peter Helmer, age 54 (b. Herkimer Co., NY) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Catharine Helmer, age 55 (b. Jefferson Co., NY); and son, Leonard Helmer, age 22 (b. Jefferson Co., NY).

NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in LeRay Township (Philadelphia Post Office), Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Betsey Helmer, age 24 (b. NYS); daughter, Dora Helmer, age 1 month (b. NYS); father, Peter Helmer, age 48 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, whose real estate was valued at $12,000 and personal property was valued at $2,500; mother, Catharine Helmer, age 52 (b. NYS); and brother, Leonard Helmer, age 16 (b. NYS) and "at home."

 

b. Emogena "Emma" Helmer: Born May 1844 in New York.  Died 1904.  Married Charles Petrie in 1870.

 

c. Daniel Helmer: Born 25 December 1845 in Herkimer County, New York.  Died 5 December 1868 at Evans Mills, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York; interred there.  Married, as her 1st husband, Frances Grappotte and resided at Evans Mills, Jefferson County, New York.  Daniel and Frances had the following children: (order uncertain)

 

(1. Peter “Pete” D. Helmer: (photos)(more info) Born May 1869 in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died at home in Evans Mills on Thursday, 22 February 1922, age 53.  Attended Evans Mills area schools and was subsequently employed as a farmer.

 

1910 US Census: Peter D., age 40, was heading a household on Main Street in Evans Mills, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife of 19 years, Della J. Helmer (age 44, had had no children); and servant, Fred Brown.

 

Peter D. Helmer married Adell “Della” J. Simonet, daughter of Louis and Melinda (Blanc) Simonet of Evans Mills in 1890 and initially resided at Boston, Massachusetts.  Soon after they moved back to LeRay Township, where Peter owned and worked several farms.  Peter and Della had no children.

 

Following Daniel death, Frances (Grappotte) Helmer married (?) Stienhilber and had the following children:

1870 US Census: Leonard Helmer, age 16 (b. NYS) resided in the household headed by his brother, James Helmer, age 27 (b. NYS) in New York.

 

1910 US Census: Leonard A. Helmer, age 55 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), who had his own income, was heading a household on LeRay Street in Evans Mills, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He had been married twice.  The household also included his wife of 6 years, Jennie Helmer, age 43 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), who had been married twice and had had 1 child, still alive; and daughter, Grace Helmer, age 23 (b. NYS; father b. NYS; mother b. Canada), single, and not employed.

Helmer, age 71, was heading a household in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife of 47 years, Lenora Helmer (age 64, had had 2 children, both still alive); son, George B. Helmer (age 43); daughter, Bida (sp) E. Helmer (age 37, single); and George’s wife of 1 year, Lula L. Helmer (age 36).

 

d. Minervia Helmer: Born about 1841.
