1860 US Census: Luther M. Hill, age 53 (b. VT) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Alexandria Township (Redwood Post Office), Jefferson County, New York.  His real estate was valued at $6,000 and his personal property was valued at $785.  The household also included his wife, Jane Hill, age 50 (no birth location recorded); son, Harmon D. Born about 1848 in New York.  Died 1889; interred Barnes Settlement Cemetery, Alexandria Bay, Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Veteran of the American Civil War; served in Company F. of the 10th NY Heavy Artillery Regiment.

 

1870 US Census: Edson B. Hill, age 22 (b. NYS) and employed as a farm laborer, was heading a household in Alexandria Township (Redwood Post Office), Jefferson County, New York.  His real estate was valued at $360 and his personal property was valued at $175.  The household also included his wife, Jennette Hill, age 18 (b. NYS).

 

1875 NYS Census: Edson B. Hill, age 27 (b. Jefferson Co., NY) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Jennette Hill, age 22 (b. Jefferson Co., NY); son, Charles Hill, age 6 (b. Jefferson Co., NY); son, Frank Hill, age 1 year and 4 months (b. MO); and Myra McGraw?, age 17 (b. Jefferson Co., NY) and employed as a teacher.  Of interest, the household headed by Bryon Pierce, age 43 (b. Born March 1853 in New York; daughter of Byron (b. Lewis Co., NY, d. 20 Jan 1885; interred Cd) and Milissa (?) Pierce (b. Oswego Co., NY, d. 22 Apr 1878, age 48).  Died 1916; interred with Baker.  Married (1st) Osceola H. Hill in 1906.  Perhaps married (2nd) William Merrell of Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York and had the following daughter:

1855 NYS Census: Byron Pierce, age 27 (b. Lewis Co., NY) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He had resided in Jefferson County, New for 15 years.  The household also included his wife, Milissa Pierce, age 26 (b. Oswego Co., NY), who had resided in Jefferson County, New York for 14 years; daughter, Jennett Pierce, age 3 (b. Jefferson Co., NY); and daughter, Juliet Pierce, age 1 (b. Jefferson Co., NY).

 

1900 US Census: Janet Merrell, age 47 (b. Mar 1853 in NYS; parents b. NYS), with no occupation recorded, was heading a household in the Village of Alexandria Bay, Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  She had been married 30 years [husband not enumerated with her] and had had 5 children, 4 of whom were still alive.  The household also included her son, Ross Hill, age 15 (b. Nov 1884 in NYS; parents b. NYS), single, and in school; and daughter, Mellisa Merrell, age 5 (b. Sep 1894 in NYS; parents b. NYS).

 

1900 US Census: Of possible interest, William Merrill, age 51 (b. Jun 1848 in NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He had been married 24 years [wife not enumerated with him; number of children not recorded].  The household also included his son, Melvin Merrill, age 17 (b. Oct 1882 in NYS), with no occupation recorded; boarder, Carl Schwappacher, age 30 (b. Jun 1869 in Germany) and employed as a farm laborer; and Carl's wife of 9 years, Henretta Schwappacher, age 30 (b. Nov 1869 in NYS), who had had no children.

 

1905 NYS Census: Janett Merrell, age 53, was heading a household on Walton Street in Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included her son, Ross Merrell [should be Hill], age 20; and daughter, Melissa Merrell, age 10. (pg 15) 

 

1910 US Census: Janet Merrill, age 57 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and not employed, was heading a household on Walton Street in the Village of Alexandria Bay, Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  She had been married twice, most recently for 17 years [husband not enumerated with her], and had had 4 children, all still alive.  The household also included her daughter, Melissa Merrill, age 15 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and single; and son, Ross Hill, age 25 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), single, and employed as a laborer doing odd jobs.

 

1915 NYS Census: Jannet T. Merrill, age 63 (b. ), was heading a household in Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included her daughter, Melissa S. Merrill, age 20 (b. ). (pg 5)

1. Biographical notes:

 

Born 24 April 1879 at Alexandria Bay, Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 1924 at Richmondville, Richmondville Township, Schoharie County, New York; interred Barnes Settlement Cemetery, Alexandria Bay, Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Was employed as a school teacher on Wellsley Island, New York in the St. Lawrence River, and resided there for a while.  Then taught school and was a school principal in New Jersey and California, returning to New York, where he was school principal in Amsterdam, Montgomery County, New York (resided at 11 Luther St) and at Union Central School, Richmondville, New York.

 

1900 US Census: No record found; perhaps in college.

 

1905 NYS Census: Osceola Hill, age 25 (b. US) and employed as a school teacher, was boarding in the household headed by Cynthia M. Rose, age 67 (b. US) and employed keeping house, on Catharine Street in the Village of Parishville, Parishville Township, St. Lawrence County, New York.

 

1910 US Census: Oceola H. Hill, age 30 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as a public school teacher, was heading a household in the City of Amsterdam, Montgomery County, New York.  He had been married once.  The household also included his wife of 3 years, Catherine Hill, age 25 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), who had had 3 children, all still alive; daughter, Clara Hill, age 2 (b. NYS); son, Leon Hill, age 1 year and 4 months (b. NYS); daughter, Margaret Hill, age less than 1 month (b. NYS); and boarder, Ethel Van Husen, age 22 (b. NYS; father b. NYS; mother b. US), single, and employed as a folder on a knitting mill.

 

1915 NYS Census: Oceola Hill, age 36, was heading a household in the City of Amsterdam, Montgomery County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Catherine Hill, age 31; daughter, Clara Hill, age 8; son, Leon Hill, age 6; daughter, Marget Hill, age 5; daughter, Ruth Hill, age 4; and son, George Hill, age 1.

 

1920 US Census: Orrie Hill, age 45 [should be abt 40] (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as school professor, was heading a household on Holly Street in Amsterdam Township, Montgomery County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Clara Hill, age 45 [should be Katherine, abt age 35] (b. NYS; parents b. NYS); daughter, Clara Hill, age 13 (b. NYS); son, Leon Hill, age 11 (b. NYS); daughter, Margaret Hill, age 9 (b. NYS); Ruth Hill, age 8 (b. NYS); son, George Hill, age 6 (b. NYS); and daughter, Mildred Hill, age 10 months (b. NYS).

Born 1884 in Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York, daughter of Napolean R. (b. 1857, d. 1927) and Sarah (Gilmore/Gillmore) Hodge (b. 1855, d. 1904).  Died there in 1953, age 69, from complications of several strokes at Edward John Noble Hospital, Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence County, New York; interred Barnes Settlement Cemetery.  Attended Alexandria Township district schools.  Married Osceola Harvey Hill about 1907 in Jefferson County, New York.

 

1925 NYS Census: Napeleon Hodge, age 68 (b. US), was heading a household in Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his son, Harry Hodge, age 45 (b. US); son, Beet Hodge, age 41 (b. US); daughter, Milderd Hodge, age 32 (b. US); daughter, Katherine Hill, age 40 (b. US); granddaughter, Clara Hill, age 12 (b. US); grandson, Leon Hill, age 16 (b. US); granddaughter, Margaret Hill, age 15 (b. US); granddaughter, Ruth Hill, age 14 (b. US); grandson, George Hill, age 11 (b. US); granddaughter, Beaterice Hill, age 7 (b. NYS), widowed, and not employed, was heading a household at 424 Cortland Avenue in the City of Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York.  The household also included her daughter, Clara Hill, age 21 (b. NYS), single, and employed as a public school teacher; son, Leon Hill, age 20 (b. NYS), single, and not employed; daughter, Margaret Hill, age 19 (b. NYS), single, and employed as a stenographer in a department store; daughter, Ruth Hill, age 18 (b. NYS), single, and not employed; and son, George Hill, age 16 (b. NYS), single, and not employed.

 

1930 US Census: Bert E. Hodge, age 46 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), single, and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his brother, Harrison G. Hodge, age 42 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), single, and employed as a farmer; sister, Mildred M. Kring, age 37 (b. NYS) and widowed, who married 1st at age 32; niece, Beatrice S. Hill, age 12 (b. NYS) and employed as a public school teacher; nephew, Gordan G. Hill, age 7 (b. NYS); and aunt, Jane Ball, age 71 (b. NYS; parents b. English-speaking Canada) and widowed, who married 1st at age 20.

1940 US Census: Clara J. Hill, age 30 (b. NYS), single, and employed as a public school teacher, was heading a household at 265 W. Kennedy Street in the City of Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York.  She had completed 1 year of college.  The household also included her sister, Beatrice S. Hill, age 22 (b. NYS) and employed as a typist in an office, who had completed 4 years of high school; lodger, Elizabeth Tobin, age 25 (b. NYS) and employed as a public school teacher, who had completed 1 year of college; and lodger, Ann Davern, age 32 (b. NYS) and employed as a public school teacher, who had completed 1 year of college.  They all resided in the same city on 1 April 1935.

 

Clara Hill married Thomas Murphy and resided at Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York.

 

b. Leon O. Hill: Born 26 November 1908 in New York.  Died 8 May 1994; interred Barnes Settlement Cemetery, Alexandria Bay, Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Resided at Denver, Colorado.

 

c. Margaret Kathryn Hill: Born 4 April 1910 in the City of Amsterdam, Montgomery County, New York.  Died 18 October 1946 in the City of Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York; interred there in Oakwood Cemetery.

 

1940 US Census: William Menzies, age 29 (b. English-speaking Canada) and employed as a cake salesman for a bakery, was heading a household at 116 Cayuga Street in the City of Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York.  He had completed 8th grade, and he and his wife resided in the same house on 1 April 1935.  The household also included his wife, Margaret Menzies, age 30 (b. NYS), who had completed 4 years of high school; and daughter, Carol Menzies, age 4 (b. NYS).

 

At age 23 Margaret Hill married, as his 1st wife, William Lyle Menzies (b. 4 Dec 1910 in Ingersoll Twp, Oxford Co., Ontario, Canada, d. 16 Nov 1969 at Syracuse, NY; interred with Margaret), age 23, son of William John (b. 1885 in Canada, d. 1941 at Syracuse, NY) and Edith Browning (Porterfield) Menzies (b. 7 Jun 1883 in Canada, d. 1938 at Syracuse, NY), on 30 December 1933 in Camillus Township, Onondaga County, New York and resided in Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York.  Margaret and William had the following daughter:

William L. Menzies married (2nd) Nellie Pinkowicz (b. 19 May 1918 at Syracuse, Onondaga Co., NY, d. there 22 Sep 2007; interred with William and Margaret).

 

d. Ruth Mildred Hill: Born 9 March 1911 in the City of Amsterdam, Montgomery County, New York.  At age 24 married Karl Eugene Goodwin (b. 28 Jul 1912 at Syracuse, Onondaga Co., NY), age 24, son of Charles B. and Mary K. (McLaughlin) Goodwin of Syracuse, New York, on 27 April 1935 in Camillus Township, Onondaga County, New York and resided at Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York.

 

e. George Orville Hill: Born 31 January 1914 in the City of Amsterdam, Montgomery County, New York.  Resided at Alexandria Bay, Jefferson County, New York.  Also seen: resided at Redwood, New York.

 

1940 US Census: George O. Hill, age 26 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He had completed 4 years of high school.  The household also included his wife, Evelyn I. Hill, age 24 (b. NYS), who had completed 3 years of high school.  They resided in the same house on 1 April 1935.  Of interest, the household headed by his uncle, Bert E. Hodge, age 58, was enumerated next door.

 

At age 21 George Hill married Evelyn Ione Simpson (b. 28 Mar 1916 in Alexandria Twp, Jefferson Co., NY), age 19, daughter of Leslie and Sadie (Edgerly) Simpson, on 25 April 1935 in Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.

h. Gordon G. Hill: Born 12 January 1923 in New York.  Died 25 June 2005, age 82, at Redwood, Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York (also seen: d. Alexandria Bay, Alexandria Twp).  Employed as a dairy farmer.  Resided at Alexandria Bay, Jefferson County, New York.

 

1930 US Census: Gordon G. Hill, age 7 (b. NYS) resided in the household headed by his uncle, Bert E. Hodge, age 46 (see above).

 

1940 US Census: Gordon Hill, age 17 (b. NYS) and single, with no occupation recorded, resided in the household headed by his uncle, Bert E. Hodge, age 58 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, in Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included Gordon's aunt, Mildred M. Hodge, age 47, and uncle, Harry G. Hodge, age 62, as well as their ward, Miller Ellis, age 18, and several boarders.  Of interest, the household headed by Gordon's brother, George O. Hill, age 26, was enumerated next door.
