1850 US Census: Hiram Holmes, age 38 (b. MA) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Stockholm Township, St. Lawrence County, New York.  His real estate was valued at $800.  The household also included his wife, Maryann Holmes, age 40 (b. VT); son, George A. Holmes, age 11 (b. NYS); daughter, Maryann Holmes, age 8 (b. NYS); son, Nelson N. Holmes, age 6 (b. NYS); daughter, Almeda N. Holmes, age 5 (b. NYS); son, Hiram H. Holmes, age 4 (b. NYS); and daughter, Electa S. Holmes, age 1 (b. NYS).

Hays, age 49 (b. VT); George A. Holmes, age 20 (b. NYS) and employed as a miller; Henry H. Holmes, age 13 (b. NYS); Orban Holmes, age 9 (b.  NYS); and Electer Holmes, age 12 (b. NYS).

b. Mary Ann Holmes: Born 6 April 1842 in Stockholm Township, St. Lawrence County, New York.  Died there 11 February 1926/27; interred Bayside Cemetery, Potsdam, St. Lawrence County, New York.  Resided last with her brother, Orban, at Winthrop, Stockholm Township, St. Lawrence County.

 

1870 US Census: Leonard Sayles, age 30 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in New York.  His real estate was valued at $4,500, and his personal property was valued at $2,000.  The household also included his wife, Mary Sayles, age 28 (b. NYS); son, George Sayles, age 7 (b. NYS); and daughter, Ida Sayles, age 6 (b. NYS).

 

1880 US Census: Leonard Sayles, age 40 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household  in Potsdam Township, St. Lawrence County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Mary A. Sayles, age 38 (b. NYS); son, George H. Sayles, age 17 (b. NYS) and employed on the farm; daughter, Ida Sayles, age 16 (b. NYS); son, Charles Sayles, age 8 (b. NYS); and son, Homer Sayles, age 1 (b. NYS).

 

1900 US Census: Leonard Sayles, age 60 (b. Apr 1840 in NYS; father b. VT; mother b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Potsdam Township, St. Lawrence County, New York.  The household also included his wife of 38 years, Mary H. Sayles, age 58 (b. Apr 1842 in NYS; parents b. VT), who had had 4 children, all still alive; son, Homer Sayles, age 21 (b. Aug 1878 in NYS) and employed as a farm laborer; and servant, Nora Parker, age 19 (b. Sep 1880 in NYS).

 

1920 US Census: Mary A. Sayles, age 77 (b. NYS; parents b. VT) and widowed, resided in the household headed by her son-in-law, Alba V. Gotes, age 55 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as a farmer in Parishle Township, St. Lawrence County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Ida Gotes, age 55 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS).

 

Mary A. Holmes married Leonard Sayles (b. Apr 1840 in NYS), perhaps son of Nicholas and Lydia (?) Sayles, and resided at Winthrop.  They had the following children:

 

(1. George H. Sayles: Born about 1863 in New York.

 

(2. Ida Sayles: Born about 1864 in New York.  Married Alba V. Gotes and in 1920 resided in Parishle Township, St. Lawrence County, New York.

c. Nelson N. Holmes: Born about 1844 in Stockholm Township, St. Lawrence County, New York.  Veteran of the American Civil War; enlisted 24 Sep 1861 at Ogdensburg, New York; discharged 29 Oct 1864 at Atlanta, Georgia; served in Company D, 60th NY Infantry Regiment.

 

1860 US Census: Nelson Holmes, age 17 (b. NYS) and employed as a farm laborer, resided in the household headed by Fredrick Chase, age 37 and employed as a farmer, in Stockholm Township, St. Lawrence County, New York.

 

1870 US Census: Nelson Holmes, age 27 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Potsdam Township, St. Lawrence County, New York.  His personal property was valued at $600.  The household also included his wife, Catharine Holmes, age 30 (b. Canada); son, Charles H. Holmes, age 3 (b. NYS); son, George J. Holmes, age 1 (b. NYS); domestic servant, Elizabeth Gurley, age 19 (b. Canada); and farm laborer, John Hayes, age 20 (b. NYS).

 

Nelson Holmes married Catharine (?) and had the following chhildren:

VT) and employed as a night watchman, was heading a household in Potsdam Township, St. Lawrence County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Almeda Smith, age 34 (b. NYS; parents b. VT); son, Fred'k Smith, age 17 (b. NYS) and employed in a sawmill; daughter, Mary Smith, age 15; daughter, Emma Smith, age 13 (b. NYS); and son, William Smith, age 6 (b. NYS).

 

Almeda Holmes married Darius Smith (b. abt 1822 in NYS), son of Ralph Parker (b. Jun 1795 in VT; d. 3 Apr 1879 in Cleveland Twp, Le Sueur Co., MN) and Ruth (?) Smith and had the following children:

Holmes, age 26 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS); daughter, Anna B. Holmes, age 5 (b. NYS); and daughter, Alice A. Holmes, age 4 (b. NYS).

 

1900 US Census: Orson A. Holmes, age 49 (b. Aug 1850 in NYS; parents b. VT) and employed as a day laborer, was heading a household in Hopkinton Township, St. Lawrence County, New York.  The household also included his wife of 30 years, Lorena L. Holmes, age 46 (b. Jul 1853 in NYS; parents b. NYS), who had had 4 children, 2 of whom were still alive.

VT) and employed as a laborer doing odd jobs, was heading a household in the Village of Fort Jackson, Hopkinton Township, St. Lawrnece County, New York.  The household also included his wife of 40 years, Lorena Holms, age 57 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), who had had 2 children, both still alive.

1925 NYS Census: Orban A. Holmes, age 74 (b. US), was heading a household in Stockholm Township, St. Lawrence County, New York. (pg 7)

 

1930 US Census: Orban A. Holmes, age 79 (b. NYS; parents b. VT) and not employed, was heading a household on Maple Street in Winthrop, Stockholm Township, St. Lawrence County, New York.  He was married 1st at age 20, and his residence was valued at $3,000.  The household also included his wife, Lorena L. Holmes, age 76 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), who was married 1st at age 17.

 

1940 US Census: Orban Holmes, age 89 (b. NYS), with no occupation recorded, was heading a household in Stockholm Township, St. Lawrence County, New York.  He completed 5th grade, and he and his wife resided in the same house on 1 April 1935.  The household included his wife, Lorena Holmes, age 86 (b. NYS), who had completed 5th grade; and hired girl, Mary Richardson, age 75 (b. NYS), who had completed 6th grade, and on 1 April 1935 resided in Norfolk Township, St. Lawrence County, New York.

 

Orban Holmes married Lorence "Lorena" L. Emery and had the following children:

 

(1. Anna B. Holmes: Born about 1875 in New York.  Died .  Married Wright I. Fleming, son of James and Caroline (Chittendon) Fleming, on 25 May 1892 at Parishville, St. Lawrence County, New York.

 

1910 US Census: Wright I. Fleming, age 39 (b. NYS) and employed as , was heading a household at 21 24th Street in the City of Troy, Rensselaer County, New York.  The household also included his wife of 17 years, Anna B. Fleming, age 35 (b. NYS), who had had 1 child, still alive; and daughter, Keziah D. Fleming, age 15 (b. NYS).

 

1920 US Census: Wright I. Fleming, age 49 (b. NYS) and employed as a house painter, was heading a household at 900 3rd Avenue in the City of Troy, Rensselaer County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Anna B. Fleming, age 44 (b. NYS).

 

1930 US Census: Wright I. Fleming, age 59 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as a decorator in the papering and painting industry, was heading a household at 900 Third Avenue in the City of Troy, Rensselaer County, New York.  He married 1st at age 22.  The household also included his wife, Anna B. Fleming, age 54 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), who married 1st at age 17.

 

Anna B. Holmes married Wright I. Fleming (b. about 1871 in NYS) and had the following daughter:

NYS) and employed as a farm laborer, was heading a household in Hopkinton Township, St. Lawrence County, New York.  The household also included his wife of 13 years, Alice Converse, age 34 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), who had had 2 children, both still alive; son, Harry Converse, age 11 (b. NYS); and son, Harold Converse, age 5 (b. NYS).

 

1940 US Census: Albion Converse, age 69 (b. NYS) and employed as a meat cutter in a retail meat market, was heading a household at Winthrop, Stockholm Township, St. Lawrence County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Alise Converse, age 63 (b. YS); son, Harold Converse, age 35 (b. NYS) and employed as a bartender in a tavern; son, Harry Converse, age 40 (b. NYS), who owned and operated a retail meat market; and granddaughter [Harry's dau], Mary Converse, age 15 (b. NYS).  They resided in the same house on 1 April 1935.

 

Alice Holmes married Albion Converse (b. abt 1871 in NYS) and had the following children:
