1. Biographical notes:

 

Born about 1796 in New Hampshire (also seen: b. 1802 in MA).  Died 4 September 1889, age 87, at Watertown, Jefferson County, New York; interred there in Brookside Cemetery.  In 1818 moved to Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Employed mostly as a hotel keeper for 55 years.

 

1830 US Census: Benjamin Jackman was heading a household in Boscawen Township, Merrimack County, New Hampshire.  Would have been about 34 years old.

 

1840 US Census: Not in New Hampshire.  Also not in Jefferson County, New York.  Would have been about 44 years old.  There was a Benjamin Jackson heading a household in Boonville Township, Oneida County, New York.

 

1850 US Census: Benjamin Jackman, age 54 and employed as a landlord, was heading a household in the Village of Antwerp, Antwerp Township, Jefferson County New York.  His real estate was valued at $5,000.  The household also included his son, Stephen P. Jackman, age 21 (b. NYS) and employed as a landlord.  John Bolton, age 24 and employed as a miller; H. D. Johnson, age 20 and employed as a tailor; Andrew French, age 25 and employed as a stage driver; Timothy Jackman, age 16 and employed as a clerk; George Jackman, age 11 and employed as a clerk; Daniel Jackman, age 7 and employed as a clerk; Charles Robinson, age 22 and employed as a Hostler; Sarah Jackman, age 40; Abi Drake, age 23 (b. NYS); Ida Jackman, age 2; Margaret Farale, age 17; and Elizabeth Swingston, age 20.  All were born in New York State.  Of interest, there were also households headed by Ide Jackman and Sarah Jackman in Antwerp Township, and a George Jackman was heading a household in near-by Brownville Township.

 

1855 NYS Census: John H. Fowler, age 29 (b. Jefferson Co., NY) and employed as a merchant, was heading a household in Watertown Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He had resided in Watertown Township for 6 years, and his residence was valued at $1,600.  The household also included his wife, Abi S. Fowler, age 28 (b. Jefferson Co., NY), who had resided in Watertown of 3 years; son, George J. Fowler, age 1 (b. Jefferson Co., NY), who had resided in Watertown for 1 year; and brother-in-law, George L. Jackman, age 15 (b. Lewis Co., NY), who had resided in Watertown for 3 years.

 

1855 NYS Census: Benjamin Jackman, age 52 (b. MA) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Antwerp Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Sarah Jackman, age 48 (b. Saratoga Co., NY); son, Daniel Jackman, age 12 (b. Jefferson Co., NY); Mary Clark, age 18 (b. Ireland) and employed as a servant; and Joseph R. Dowling, age 22 (b. Canada) and employed as a laborer.

 

1860 US Census: Benjamin Jackman, age 58 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading of a household in Pamelia Township (Watertown Post Office), Jefferson County, New York.  His real estate was valued at $9,000, and his personal property was valued at $2,000.  The household also included his wife, Sarah Jackman, age 54 (b. NYS); daughter, Abi Fowler, age 33 (b. NYS), whose personal property was valued at $2,000; son, Timothy Jackman, age 25 (b. NYS) and employed as an engineer, whose personal property was valued at $150; son, George Jackman, age 21 (b. NYS); son, Daniel Jackman, age 17 (b. NYS); grandson, George Fowler, age 6 (b. NYS); granddaughter, Nelly C. Fowler, age 4 (b. NYS); and Abi's husband, John H. Fowler, age 35 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer; and servant, Emma Gardner, age 18 (b. NYS).

 

1865 NYS Census: B. Jackman, age 63 (b. MA) and employed as a hotel keeper, was heading a household in the City of Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.  He had been married once.  His brick residence was valued at $6,000.  The household also included his wife, Sarah Jackman, age 59 (b. Saratoga Co., NY), who had been married once, and had had 7 children; son, Daniel Jackman, age 22 (b. Jefferson Co., NY) and single, with no occupation recorded; daughter, Aby Fowler, age 38 (b. Jefferson Co., NY) and widowed, who had been married once and had had 1 child [seems like this should be higher]; grandson, Wm E. Fowler, age 8 (b. Jefferson Co., NY); son, Solon Wilder, age 28 (b. Jefferson Co., NY), single, and employed as a clerk; porter, John Vueley?, age 26 (b. Canada) and single; hostler?, James Faragon?, age 28 (b. Canada) and single; daughter, Bridget Jackman, age 25 (b. Lewis Co.?, NY) and widowed, who had been married once and had had 1 child; granddaughter, Jenie Jackman, age 5 (b. Lewis Co.?, NY); and several other boarders and domestic servants.  

 

1870 US Census: Benjamin Jackman, age 68 (b. NH) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Champion Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Sarah Jackman, age 64 (b. NYS); son, Daniel Jackman, age 27 (b. NYS); daughter-in-law, Kate Jackman, age 23 (b. Ireland); granddaughter, Abi S. Jackman, age 3 (b. NYS); grandson, Ben Jackman, age 1 (b. NYS); and Agnes Walace, age 17 (b. Canada) and employed as a domestic servant.

 

1875 NYS Census: Benjamin Jackman, age 72 (b. NH) and a retired landlord, was heading a household in the City of Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.  His residence was valued at $6,000.  The household also included his wife, Sarah Jackman, age 69 (b. Saratoga Co., NY); daughter, Abi Strickland, age 48 (b. Jefferson Co., NY) and widowed; granddaughter, Nelly Fowler, age 19 (b. Jefferson Co., NY); granddaughter, Mary Fowler, age 14 (b. Jefferson Co., NY); boarder, William P. Brown, age 34 (b. Jefferson Co., NY), married, and employed as a school teacher; boarder, Anna Gallagher, age 43 (b. Ireland), single, and employed as a pastry cook; and boarder, Seeva S. Phillips, age 26 (b. Otsego Co., NY), single, and employed selling fruit trees.

 

1880 US Census: B. Jackman, age 78 (b. NH; parents b. NH), widowed, and employed keeping boarders, was heading a household in the City of Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his daughter, Abi Strickland, age 53 (b. NYS; father b. NH; mother b. NYS), widowed, and keeping house; granddaughter, Nellie Fowler, age 24 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), single, and at home; granddaughter, Mary Fowler, age 19 (b.  NYS; parents b. NYS), single, and at home; and Miles Strickland, age 34 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), single, and employed as a clerk in a cloth store.

(2. Stephen P. Jackman: Born about 1829 in New York.  Died 17 September 1866, age 37 years, 1 month, and 17 days; interred Brookside Cemetery, Watertown, New York.

 

(3. Timothy Jackman: Born about 1834.  Died 31 December 1862, age 28 at Falmouth, Virginia during the American Civil War; served in the 34th NY Volunteer Infantry Regiment.  Gravestone (perhaps interred) in Brookside Cemetery, Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.

 

(4. George L. Jackman: Born about 1839.  Died 1 June 1866, age 26 years, 10 months, and 9 days; interred Brookside Cemetery, Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.

 

(5. Daniel L. Jackman: Born 1844.  Died 21 April 1901 in the Borough of Manhattan (1 West 13th St), New York City, New York; interred Watertown, New York.  Veteran of the American Civil War; served in Company H, 34th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment and Company D., 13th New York Cavalry Regiment; was a prisoner of war.  Employed as a farmer until their farm burned.  Then moved to Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.

 

1870 US Census: Daniel Jackman, age 27, resided with his wife and daughter in the household headed by his father in Champion Township, Jefferson County, New York (see above).

 

1880 US Census: Daniel Jackman, age 38 (b. NYS; father b. NH; mother b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Ellisburg Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Kate Jackman, atge 33 (b. Ireland); daughter, Abi Jackman, age 13 (b.  NYS); son, Benjamin Jackman, age 11 (b. NYS); son, Timothy Jackman, age 7 (b. NYS); and Walter Mitchell, age 39 (b. NYS) and employed as a laborer.

 

1900 US Census: Daniel L. Jackman, age 56 (b. Jan 1843 in NYS; parents b. NH) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household on 134th Street in the Borough of Manhattan, New York City, New York.  The household also included his wife of 27 years, Kate Jackman, age 54 (b. Mar 1846 in Ireland; parents b. Ireland), who had had 5 children, 3 of whom were still alive; daughter, Abi S. Jackman, age 23 (b. May 1867 in NYS; father b. NYS; mother b. Ireland), single, and employed as an authoress; and daughter, Eva M. Jackman, age 13 (b. Aug 1886 in NYS; father b. NYS; mother b. Ireland) and single.

 

Daniel Jackman married Catherine "Kate" Colligan (b. Ireland), daughter of Patrick and Mary (Crotty) Colligan, and had the following children:

 

(a. Abi Sibyl Jackman: Born 29 May 1869 in Champion Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Graduate of Adams Collegiate Institute.  Employed as an author from age 16.

 

(b. Benjamin "Ben" Jackman: Born about 1869 in New York.

(d. Eva May Jackman: Born August 1886 in New York.

 

(6. Ida/Eda Mary Jackman: Born 19 September 1847.

Born 27 March 1827 in Jefferson County, New York.  Died 25 April 1905 in Mendon Township, St. Joseph County, Michigan; gravestone (perhaps also interred) in Brookside Cemetery, Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.  Married (1st) Alanson Drake, paragraph 5.d.(2) of the Josiah Drake, III page.  Widow Abi (Jackman) Drake married (2nd) John H. Fowler.  Widow Abi (Jackman)(Drake) Fowler married (3rd) widower, Seth Strickland.
