1. Biographical notes:

 

Born 15 September 1800 in France.  Died 3 November 1889; interred Saint Vincent of Paul Cemetery, Cape Vincent Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Immigrated to the United States between 1845 and 1847.

 

1840 US Census: No record found for Francis Merchant in New York State.

 

1850 US Census: Francis Merchant, age 40 (b. France) and employed as a laborer, was heading a household in New Hartford Township, Oneida County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Catharine Merchant, age 38 (b. France); son, George Merchant, age 5 (b. France); son, James Merchant, age 3 (b. NYS); son, Daniel Merchant, age 1 (b. NYS); and Ruth A. Newhouse, age 20 (b. NYS).

 

1855 NYS Census: Francis Merchant, age 46 (b. France) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Election District 2 of Rome Township, Oneida County, New York.  He was a naturalized citizen and had resided there 2 months.  The household also included his wife, Catharine Merchant, age 50 (b. France); son, Francis Merchant, age 13 (b. France); and son, Joseph Merchant, age 10 (b. France).

 

1860 US Census:

 

1865 NYS Census: Francis Marchand, age 63 (b. France) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Cape Vincent Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He had been married twice and his frame house was valued at $1,000.  The household also included his wife Margaret Marchand, age 46 (b. France) and mother of 2, who had also been married twice; and son, Claud Marchand, age 15 (b. Jefferson Co., NY) and employed as a farmer.

1905 NYS Census: Lyman B. Canfield, age 69, was heading a household in Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York (pg 4, lines 17-19).  The household also included his wife, Mary C. Canfield, age 67; and mother-in-law, Margaret Merchant, age 86.

 

1910 US Census: Lyman B. Canfield, age 74 (b. NYS; parents b. MA), was heading a household in Ward 1 of Watertown Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Mary C. Canfield, age 70 (b. NYS; parents b. France).

 

Married Lyman B. Canfield (b. Mar 1837 in NYS; parents b. MA), who was employed as a farmer, and in 1900 resided in Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York.  They had the following children:

 

(a. George L. Canfield: Born about 1869 in New York.

 

1910 US Census: George L. Canfield, age 41 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), was heading a household in Ward 1 of Watertown Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Ida M. Canfield, age 43 (b. NYS); and son, Hayden L. Canfield, age 14 (b. NYS).

1910 US Census: Fred E. Canfield, age 38 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), was heading a household in Champion Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Dora Canfield, age 41 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS); and daughter, Ruby E. Canfield, age 13 (b. NYS).

Born August 1819 in France.  Died .  Immigrated to the United States in 1850.

 

1900 US Census: Margaret Merchand, age 81 (b. Aug 1819 in France; parents b. France; immigrated to the US in 1850), widow, and mother of 8, 1 of whom was alive, resided in the household headed by her son-in-law, Lyman B. Canfield, age 63 (b. Mar 1837 in NYS) and employed as a farmer, in Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included Margaret's daughter and Lyman's wife of 41 years, Mary D. Canfield, age 60 (b. Aug 1840 in NYS; parents b. France).

 

1905 NYS Census: Margaret Merchant, age 86, resided in the household headed by her son-in-law, Lyman B. Canfield, age 69, in Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York (pg 4, lines 17-19).  The household also included Margaret's daughter (Lyman's wife), Mary C. Canfield, age 67.
