Immigrated to the US in 1832, arriving in New York City on 15 June 1832. Moved north to Cape Vincent Township, Jefferson County, New York, settling on what is now Route 26. About 1859 Mary C. Merchant married Lyman B. Canfield (b. 28 Mar 1836 in Clayton Twp, Jefferson Co., NYS, d. 24 Mar 1912 at Watertown, Jefferson Co., NY; parents b. MA; interred with Mary), who was employed as a farmer, and in 1900 resided in Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York. They had the following children:

(a. Emma A. Canfield: Born 8 February 1858 in Jefferson County, New York. Died there 12 February 1945; interred there in Mapel Hill Cemetery. Married George Return Green (b. 26 Sep 1855/58 in NYS, d. 8/18 Dec 1932 in Jefferson Co., NY; interred with Emma) on 25 December 1876 in Pinckney Township, Lewis County, New York and had children.

(b. George Lyman Canfield: Born 25 June 1868 in New York. Died 1956 in Jefferson County, New York; interred there in Maple Hill Cemetery. Married Ida May Oakes (b. 20 Dec 1866 in Rutland Twp, Jefferson Co., NY, d. 1957) on 7 November 1888 in Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York and had children.

Marguerite (Absalon) Guerard married (2nd), as his 2nd wife, Francis Merchant by about July 1855 (her son, Louis was born in Mar 1856).

b. Children: (in 1875 Margaret reported 2 children; in 1900 she reported 8 children, 1 of whom was still alive; Claud (10., above) was the only child in her household from 1855 on, so it appears Margaret falsely claimed Claud (10. above) and 7 others as her children)

(1. Louis Marshaw: Born March 1856. Died 28 October 1858 in Jefferson County, New York; interred Old Saint Vincent de Paul Cemetery, Rosiere, Cape Vincent Township, Jefferson County, New York.

(2. L. Eugene Marchaun: Born 18 October 1859. Died 4 February 1860; interred Old Saint Vincent de Paul Cemetery, Rosiere, Cape Vincent Township, Jefferson County, New York.

3 Henry Merchant:

Born 5 December 1836 (also seen: b. abt 1838) in Cape Vincent Township, Jefferson County, New York. Died there 1 May 1898, age 61; interred New Saint Vincent de Paul Cemetery, Rosier, Cape Vincent Township, Jefferson County, New York. Married Christina Kirchner, paragraph D.5. of generation 3 of the Kirchner Annex about 1860.
