NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Orleans Township, Jefferson County, New York.  His real estate was valued at $4,800, and his personal property was valued at $1,330.  The household also included his wife, Phebe Pickard, age 52 (b. NYS); [mother], Rachel Pickard, age 85 (b. NYS) and "at home"; son, Lyman Pickard, age 26 (b. NYS) and working on the family farm; daughter, Delila Pickard, age 22 (b. NYS); son, Amos Pickard, age 16 (b. NYS); and daughter, Ella Pickard, age 4 (b. NYS).  Apparently residing under the same roof was the household headed by Asa Pickard, age 20 (b. NYS) and employed working on the family farm; and his wife, Elizabeth Pickard, age 22 (b. NYS), who were married in April 1870.

 

Solomon Pickard married Phebe Shimmel (b. abt 1818) and had the following children:

1865 NYS Census: Lyman Pickard, age 21 (b. Jefferson Co., NY), single, and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Orleans Township, Jefferson County, New York.  His frame dwelling was valued at $500.  Of interest, the households enumerated before and after his were: Asa A. Timerman, age 32, and Reuben Timerman, age 43.

 

1870 US Census: Lyman Pickard, age 26 and working on the family farm, resided with his parents and siblings in Orleans Township, Jefferson County, New York.

 

1875 NYS Census: Lyman Pickard, age 31 (b. Jefferson Co., NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Abba A. Pickard, age 26 (b. Jefferson Co., NYS).  They resided in a stone house.

 

1880 US Census: Lyman Pickard, age 36 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as a farm laborer, was heading a household in Clayton Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Abby Pickard, age 30 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS).

 

1900 US Census: Lyman Pickard, age 56 (b. Jun 1843 [looks like 1863; very legible] in NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Pamelia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife of 29 years, Abbie Pickard, age 50 (b. Oct 1849 in NYS; father b. NYS; mother b. England), who had had 1 child, still alive; and son, Olin S. Pickard, age 16 (b. Oct 1883 in NYS), single, and in school.

 

1910 US Census: Lyman Pickard, age 66 and widowed, resided in the household headed by his son, Oren S. Pickard, age 27 and employed as a retail dry good merchant, on North Main Street in the Village of Evans Mills, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.

 

Lyman Pickard married Abbie A. Hill and had the following son:

 

(1) Oren S. Pickard: Born October 1883 in New York.  Married Blanche Simonet, paragraph 3.j of generation 4 of the Simonet Annex, on 11 January 1910.  Apparently had no children, though it appears they raised Ruth Wiley from a young age.

(g. Asa Pickard: Born about 1850 in New York.  Married Elizabeth (?) in April 1870.

 

1870 US Census: Asa Pickard, age 20 (b. NYS) and employed working his parents' farm, was heading a household (apparently under the same roof as his parents and siblings) in Orleans Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Elizabeth Pickard, age 22 (b. NYS), who he married in April 1870.

Born December 1801 at Springfield, Otsego County, New York.  Died 24 March 1879 at Pamelia Four Corners, Pamelia Township, Jefferson County, New York; interred old Maple Grove Cemetery, Evans Mills, LeRay Township, Jefferson County.  In 1850 resided in LeRay Township.  In 1870 resided in neighboring Pamelia Township, Jefferson County, New York.

 

1870 US Census: Adolphus Pickard, age 69, was listed on page 25 of the enumeration of Pamelia Township, Jefferson County, New York as a retired farmer.  The household also included his widowed daughter-in-law, Harriette (Timmerman) Pickard, age 27; granddaughter, Ida V., age 7; and granddaughter, Jennie, age 2.

 

2. Wife: Elizabeth Elce/Elcy Turner

 

Born 24 September 1802 (also seen: 3 Oct 1810) at Accord, Ulster County, New York, daughter of Johannes (b. 16 Oct 1767 at Rochester, Ulster Co., NY) and Sarah (Ennest) Turner (b. 3 Mar 1773 at Rochester, Ulster Co., NY), who also had son, John Turner (b. 1800, d. 1878).  Died 7 December 1870, age 60, in Pamelia Township, Jefferson County, New York; interred with Adolphus in the Evans Mills Cemetery.

1. Biographical notes:

 

Born November 1828 in Otsego County (perhaps Cherry Valley near the Mohawk River), New York State.  Died 8 May 1869 (also seen: d. 24 Mar 1870, age 41) from complications of a broken back in Pamelia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Menzo was on his back on a log, holding a wagon up so a replacement wheel could be installed, and when the job was done, but before he could get up, a brother-in-law jumped on him, breaking his back.

 

Employed as a farmer, settling in Pamelia Township, Jefferson County. l

 

1865 New York State Census: Menzo, age 36 and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Pamelia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Hariette Pickard, age 27, and daughter, Ida Viola Pickard, age 2 years and 4 months.

 

Note: Vincent Ellsworth Slater said: "Menzo came from Otsego County, New York.  I vaguely recall my grandmother, Ida (Pickard) Slater, mentioning 'Cherry Valley' as his place of origin, but I'm not certain of this.  She always said she was 'Mohawk Dutch' to make sure she was not confused with the Pennsylvania Dutch, who are of Dutch heritage.  She claimed that her ancestors kept moving up the Hudson River, then the Mohawk River, to distance themselves from the English."

Timmerman of Herkimer County, New York, though at the time of the 1850 US Census, Aaron Timmerman was heading a household in Pamelia Township, Jefferson County.  In 1870 resided in Pamelia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died .  Married (1st) Menzo Pickard in 1862 in Pamelia Township.  Married (2nd) John Dempster Randall (b. 6 Apr 1826 in NYS, d. there 25 Apr 1903; interred Black River Cem.) and resided at Black River, Rutland & LeRay Townships, Jefferson County, New York (see Timmerman Annex).

 

1850 US Census: Age 10 and residing with her parents on the family farm in Pamelia Township, Jefferson County, New York.
