NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in LeRay Township (Evans Mills Post Office), Jefferson County, New York.  His real estate was valued at $5,040, and his personal property was valued at $1,055.  The household also included his wife, Elcy Prichard, age 55 (b. 1. Biographical notes:

 

Born November 1828 in Otsego County (perhaps Cherry Valley near the Mohawk River), New York State.  Died 8 May 1869 (also seen: d. 24 Mar 1870, age 41) from complications of a broken back in Pamelia Township, Jefferson County, New York; interred Evans Mills Cemetery.  Menzo was on his back on a log, holding a wagon up so a replacement wheel could be installed, and when the job was done, but before he could get up, a brother-in-law jumped on him, breaking his back.

 

Employed as a farmer, settling in Pamelia Township, Jefferson County.

 

1850 US Census: Menzo Picard, age 23 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, resided in the household headed by his father, Adolphus Picard, age 49 (b. NYS) in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.

 

1860 US Census: Menzo Prichard, age 33 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, resided in the household headed by his father, Adolphus Prichard, age 59 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.

 

1865 New York State Census: Menzo Pickard, age 37 (b. Otsego Co., NY) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Pamelia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his "mother" [should be wife], Harriet Pickard, age 21 (b. Herkimer Co., NY), who had had 1 child, and daughter, Ida V. Pickard, age 2 years and 4 months (b. Jefferson Co., NY).

 

Note: Vincent Ellsworth Slater said: "Menzo came from Otsego County, New York.  I vaguely recall my grandmother, Ida (Pickard) Slater, mentioning 'Cherry Valley' as his place of origin, but I'm not certain of this.  She always said she was 'Mohawk Dutch' to make sure she was not confused with the Pennsylvania Dutch, who are of Dutch heritage.  She claimed that her ancestors kept moving up the Hudson River, then the Mohawk River, to distance themselves from the English."

1900 US Census: John D. Randall, Sr., age 74 (b. Apr 1826 in NYS; father b. MA; mother b. Ireland) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Harriett Randall, age 56 (b. Sep 1843 in NYS), who had had 2 children, both still alive.

 

1910 US Census: Harriet "Parkinson" [appears surname should be Randall or Pickard], age 66 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), widowed, and not employed, who had had 2 children, both still alive, resided in the household headed by her daughter, Jennie Parkinson, age 38 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), single, and employed as a nurse for a private family, on West Street in the Village of Black River, Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included Jennie's "sister," Vernon M. Parkinson (male), age 21 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), single, and not employed.  No record provided on number of years married for either Jennie or Harriet.

Parkinson, age 67 (b. May 1833 in NYS; father b. VT; mother b. NYS), who had had 2 children, both still alive; and daughter, Augusta C. Hart, age 35 (b. Oct 1864 in NYS), who had been married 8 years and had had no children.

NYS; parents b. NYS), widowed, and not employed, who had had 2 children; and "sister," Vernon M. Parkinson (male), age 21 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), and not employed.

 

1920 US Census: Jennie M. Parkinson, age 50 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and divorced, resided in the household headed by her son, Dr. Vernon M. Parkinson, age 31, in Amsterdam Township, Montgomery County, New York.

 

Jennie Pickard married, as his 1st wife, Matthew Alfred Parkinson, Jr. (b. 1863 at Black River, Rutland Twp, Jefferson Co., NY, d. 1930; interred Black River Cem., Rutland Center, Jefferson Co., NY), son of Matthew Alfred, Sr. and Lydia A. (Conerios) Parkinson; subsequently divorced (separated, if not divorced by 1900).  Jennie and Matthew had the following son:

 

(1. Dr. Vernon Matthew Parkinson: (photos) Born 17 March 1889 in New York.  Died 30 May 1957 at Dolgeville, Manheim Township, Herkimer County, New York.  Was the physician who diagnosed Vincent Ellsworth Slater's tuberculosis.

 

1920 US Census: Vernon M. Parkinson, age 31 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as a physician at the Amsterdam Tuberculosis Hospital, was heading a household in Amsterdam Township, Montgomery County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Laura E. Parkinson, age 31 (b. PA; parents b. PA); mother, Jennie M. Parkinson, age 50 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) an divorced; and numerous servants.

 

1930 US Census: Vernon M. Parkinson, age 41 (b. NYS) and employed as Superintendant of Pine Crest Sanitarium, a tuberculosis hospital, was heading a household in Salisbury Township, Herkimer County, New York.  He married 1st at age 28.  The household also included his wife, Laura W. Parkinson, age 41 (b. PA), who married 1st at age 28; son, Frederick E. Parkinson, age 9 (b. NYS); son, Vernon M. Parkinson, age 4 years and 8 months (b. NYS); and a number of patients and employees.

 

1940 US Census: Vernon Parkinson, age 51 (b. NYS) and employed as a physician, was heading a household in Salisbury Township, Herkimer County, New York.  He had completed 4 years of college.  The household also included his wife, Laura Parkinson, age 51 (b. PA), who had completed 4 years of high school; son, Fredrick Parkinson, age 19 (b. NYS), single, who had completed 4 years of high school; son, Vernon Parkinson, Jr., age 14 (b. NYS); servant, Ida Chamberlain, age 55 (b. England); servant, Thomas Dyer, age 62 (b. MI) and married; laundryman, Charles Cross, age 64 (b. NYS) and married; and laundryman, John Wink, age 51 (b. Netherlands) and widowed.  They resided in the same township on 1 April 1935.

 

Dr. Vernon Parkinson married Laura "Beth" (?) (b. abt 1889 in PA) and had the following children:

PA), age 29, daughter of Henry F. and Mary (Elliott) Drake of Black River, on 7 August 1906 in Pittsfield Township, Berkshire County, Massachusetts.
