1860 US Census: No record found.

1870 US Census: H. J. Smith, age 30 [appears to be 30, but must be 50 based on 1880 Census] (b. TN) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Township 9, Range 3 (P.O. 1. Biographical notes:

Born 10 May 1852 in Jackson County, Illinois.  Died at home 20 June/July 1922, age 70, in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri; interred Hickory Ridge Cemetery, Dykes, Texas County, Missouri.  Moved from Illinois to Missouri as a young man.  Initially employed in the lumber industry as a buyer for the Moss Tie Company.  Subsequently employed as a farmer.  Later employed in the Timber business.  About 1920 moved from Cliff, Newton County, Missouri to his last residence, about 4 miles south of Allenville, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri.

Note: The 1920 and 1930 US Census records for Andrew's son, Charles (gen 2, below), indicate his father (presumably this Andrew Jackson Smith) was born in Iowa.  Coincidentally, there was an Orlando R. Smith (b. Nov 1852) who was born in IA and subsequently resided in Bluffdale Township, Greene County, Illinois.  That Orlando Smith also had a son, Charles Smith (b. Aug 1882 in IL), which could be confused with Andrew's son, Charles Henry Smith (b. Aug 1881 in IL).  Both men also had sons referred to as Otis (though, apparently, the correct spelling of the son and grandson (Charles Henry's son) of Andrew Smith was 'Odus.')

1860 US Census: No record found.

1870 US Census: Andrew Smith, age 18 (b. IL) resided with his parents in Township 9, Range 3 (P.O. Marion), Williamson County, Illinois

Smith, age 27 (b. IL; parents b. IL); daughter, Flora J. Smith, age 4 (b. IL); daughter, Nora Smith, age 2 (b. IL); sister-in-law, Sara A. Gulley, age 18 (b. IL; parents b. IL) and single; and sister-in-law, Laura A. Gulley, age 14 (b. IL; parents b. IL) and single.

1900 US Census: Andrew J. Smith, age 48 (b. May 1852 in IL; parents b. TN) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Liberty Township, Bollinger County, Missouri.  The household also included his wife of 27 years, Butts Smith, age 46 (b. Jul 1853 in IL; parents b. IL), who had had 11 children, 9 of whom were still alive; son, Charles H. Smith, age 18 (b. Aug 1881 in IL) and single; daughter, Lydia Smith, age 17 (b. Apr 1883 in IL) and single; son, Walter Smith, age 15 (b. Jun 1885 in IL) and single; son, Roy Smith, age 13 (b. May 1887 in IL); daughter, Ida M. Smith, age 11 (b. 1910 US Census: Andrew J. Smith, age 57 (b. IL; parents b. IL), was heading a household in Welch Township, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri.  The household also included his wife, Amanda C.
