Born 3 January 1842 in Wysox Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  Died (?); interred Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, Pennsylvania.  Was employed as a mason.  Resided at 41 Pitney Avenue, Athens Borough, Sayre, Pennsylvania.

 

1880 US Census: Clarence was heading a household in Athens Borough, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.

 

2.  Wife: Louisa Decker (photos)

 

Born 1844 at Chemung Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania (also seen: b. 31 March 1852 or Wysox, Bradford Co., PA).  Died 10 October 1922 at 1 PM in Pennsylvania;  funeral at her home (41 Pitney Avenue), South Waverly; interred Tioga Point Cemetery.

c. Golda “Goldie” May Smith: (photos) Born 18 January 1879 in Athens Township, Pennsylvania.  Contracted pneumonia 21 December 1913 and died three days later, 24 December 1913 at 6:10 PM (age 34 yrs, 11 mo., 6 days); interred Tioga Point Cemetery beside her brother and 2 sisters.

e. Ward Smith: Born 9 January 1884 in East Athens Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  Died 30 March 1959.

 

f. Virginia Smith: (photos) Born 17 July 1886 in East Athens Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  Died 21 August 1957.  Married Otto Emil Miller (more info) and had the following son:

Otto Emil Miller, Jr.: (more info) Born 19 May 1924.  Died about 7 June 2004, age 80; interred Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  Lifelong resident of Sayre, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  Married Elizabeth (?) about 1942 (62 yrs married) and had the following children:

 

(a. Otto “Sonny” Emil Miller, III: In 2004 resided in Pennsylvania.

 

(b. Thomas “Fudgie” Miller: In 2004 resided in Pennsylvania.

 

(c. Virginia Miller: Married David H. Smith, Sr. and in 2004 resided in New York.

1.  Biographical notes:

 

Born 6 April 1869 at Athens/Sheshequin Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  Died 9 December 1937, age 68, at the home of his daughter, Nellie, in Dundee, New York (just west of Seneca Lake); interred Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  Resided at South Waverly, Sheshequin Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  In 1901 was employed as a laborer.  Worked for more than 30 years at the Leigh Railroad Company, retiring as foreman of the Roundhouse, a position he held for 5 years.

 

1870 US Census: Resided at Athens Borough, Pennsylvania.

 

1880 US Census: Resided at Athens Borough, Pennsylvania.

 

1920 US Census: On 15 January 1920 George M. Smith, age 51 (b. PA; parents b. PA), widowed, and employed as a machinist for a railroad company, was heading a household at 41 Pitney Street in South Waverly Borough, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  The household also included his daughter, Nell Smith, age 22 (b. PA), divorced, and not employed; son, Claude Smith, age 19 (b. PA), single, and employed as a machinist helper for a railroad company; son, Rex Smith, age 17 (b. PA), single, and employed as a machinist helper for a railroad company; granddaughter, Elizabeth Benjamin, age 1 year and 10 months (b. PA); and grandson, Glen Benjamin, age 4 months (b. PA).

 

Of interest, George W. Smith and Harold Smith are mentioned on the same gravestone as George Mason and Gertrude (Gorsline) Smith in the Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, Pennsylvania.

Born 6 December 1874 at Wysox, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, daughter of Gilbert H. (b. 29 Oct 1830 in Bradford Co., PA, d. 1891) and Mercy Ann (Decker) Gorsline (b. abt 1843 in N.Y., d. 1926).  Got sick (convulsions and stroke of paralysis) during child birth on 17 August and died Sunday, 19 August 1906 at South Waverly, Pennsylvania (age 31 years, 8 months, 13 days); Anna and her still born baby boy were interred in Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, Pennsylvania.

b. Paul Clarence Smith: Born 31 August 1892 on Bridge Street in Towanda, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  Died 8 December 1892 on Charles Street at Towanda; interred in State Road Cemetery, Wysox Township beside his grandfather, G. H. Gorsline.

 

b. Alta Mae Smith: (photos) (more info) Born 16 November 1893 on Charles Street in Towanda, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  Died 26 November 1960 at 41 Pitney Avenue, Sayre, Pennsylvania; interred Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  Married Marble E. Rifenbury (photos) and resided at Sayre, Bradford County, Pennsylvania (and apparently later at RD 2 Waverly, N.Y.).  Alta Mae and Marble had the following children:

Main Street, Athens, Bradford County, Pennsylvania; interred Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens.  Resided at Fairhaven, New York before moving to the nursing home.  Served in the US Navy during World War II.

(9. Franklin “Frank” Delano Rifenbury: (more info) Born 1 February 1934.  Died 31 December 2005; interred Ft Sam Houston National Cemetery.  Per Robert L. Rifenbury’s 1999 obituary, resided at San Antonio, Texas.

 

(10. Eleanor Rifenbury: (photos) Per Robert L. Rifenbury’s 1999 obituary, married (?) Seeley and resided in Pennsylvania.

d. Nellie "Nell" Fay Smith: (photos) (more info) Born 6 October 1896 on North Williams Street in North Towanda, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  Died Saturday, 28 February 1970 at Clifton Springs Hospital, Clifton Springs, New York (just S. of NYS Thruway between Canandaigua and Seneca Lakes); interred Lakeview Cemetery, Penn Yan, New York (N.E. end of Keuka Lake).

 

1920 US Census: Nell Smith, age 22 (b. PA), divorced, and not employed, resided in the household headed by her father, George M. Smith, age 51 (b. PA) at 41 Pitney Street in South Waverly Borough, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  The household also included 2 of her brothers, Claude, age 19, and Rex, age 17; her daughter, Elizabeth Benjamin, age 1 year and 10 months (b. PA); and son, Glen Benjamin, age 4 months (b. PA).

 

1930 US Census: La Vern Vancurran, age 34 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as a laborer for an oil lease, was heading a household on Deer Creek Road in Genesee Township, Allegany County, New York. He was married 1st at age 21.  The household also included his wife, Margrett Vancurran, age 34 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), who was married 1st at age 20; son, David L. Vancurran, age 10 months (b. NYS; parents b. NYS); boarder, Heman Owens, age 83 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), who was married 1st at age 24 and was not employed; brother-in-law, Vincente Osgood, age 32 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), who was married 1st at age 24 and was not employed; sister-in-law, Nellie Osgood, age 33 (b. PA, parents b. PA), who married 1st at age 25 and was not employed; niece, Elizabeth Osgood, age 12 (b. NYS; father b. NYS; mother b. PA); nephew, Glenn Osgood, age 11 (b. PA; father b. NYS; mother b. PA); and niece, Geraldine Osgood, age 7 (b. PA; father b. NYS; mother b. PA).

 

1940 US Census: Victor Osgood, age 41 (b. NYS), who had no occupation recorded, was heading a household at 17 State Street, Dundee, Starkey Township, Yates County, New York.  He had completed 2 years of high school.  The household also included his wife, Nellie Osgood, age 42 (b. NYS) and employed as a housekeeper for a private family, who had completed 2 years of high school; son, Glenn Osgood, age 20 (b. PA) and employed as a laborer on a stone project, who had completed 2 years of high school; daughter, Geraldine Osgood, age 17 (b. PA), who had completed 1 year of high school; and uncle, Ward Smith, age 56 (b. PA) and divorced, with no occupation recorded, who had completed 8th grade.  They all resided in the same house in April 1935.

 

Nellie Fay Smith married (1st) (?) Benjamin of Barton Township, Tioga County, New York and had the following children:

 

(1. Elizabeth (Benjamin) Osgood: Born about February 1918 in Pennsylvania.  Changed surname to Osgood; formally or informally adopted by Victor H. Osgood.  Married Franklin Gelder and in 1963 resided at Phelps, New York.

 

(2. Glynn/Glenn N. (Benjamin) Osgood: Born 13 August 1919 in Pennsylvania.  Died December 1981.  Veteran of World War II; enlisted 3 February 1943 at Rochester, New York.  Changed surname to Osgood; formally or informally adopted by Victor H. Osgood.  Married Elizabeth Simmons.  In 1963 resided at Pen Yan, New York.

 

Nellie and her 1st husband were divorced by January 1920, when she resided with her father and brother on Pitney Street in South Waverly Borough, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  While there she had the following daughter:

 

(3. Gertrude Anna Smith: (more info) Born 28 May 1921 in Barrington Township, Yates County, New York State.  Raised from birth by her aunt and uncle, Isaac and Ruth (?) Smith (see paragraph f., below).

 

Nellie Fay (Smith) Benjamin married (2nd) Victor Henry Osgood (photos) (more info) (b. about 1899 at Olean, NY, d. 26 Dec 1963, age 66 at Clifton Springs, Ontario Co., NY; interred Lake View Cem.), son of Charles W. and Minnie E. (Maloney) Osgood, (interred with Nellie) on 8 March 1922 and resided on Stoll Street in Dundee, New York.  Nellie and Victor had the following children: (order uncertain)

 

(4. Geraldine/Pauline Osgood: Born about 1923 in Pennsylvania.  Married Albert Clark/Clarke and in 1963 resided at Romulus, New York.

 

(5. Victor Osgood, Jr.: Twin.  Died at birth; interred Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens Borough, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.

 

(6. Verne Osgood: Twin.  Died at birth (death certificate records his name as Verne, but cemetery records indicate his name was Vincent); interred Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens Borough, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

 

e. Pauline Smith: (photos) (more info) Born 28 November 1897 on Charles Street in Towanda, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  Died Friday, 10 October 1976, age 78 at the Soldiers and Sailors Hospital, Penn Yan, New York (N.E. end of Keuka Lake); interred Hillside Cemetery, Dundee, New York (W. side of Seneca Lake).  Married Stanley Knapp and resided at RD 3, Dundee, New York.  Pauline and Stanley had the following children: (order uncertain)

 

(1. Kenneth Knapp: Resided at Rock Stream, New York.

 

(2. Beatrice Knapp: Married Gerald Rugg and resided at Penn Yan, New York.

 

Of interest, a Charles Knapp is mentioned on the same gravestone as Pauline’s parents, George M. and Gertrude Smith.

 

f. Isaac Lawrence Smith: (photos) Born 3 October 1899 on Charles Street in Towanda, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  Died November 1958.

 

1930 US Census: Isaac Smith, age 30 (b. PA; parents b. PA) and employed as a machinist helper for the steam railroad, was heading a household at 101 Longway Street in Athens Borough, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  His residence was valued at $1,700 and he married 1st at age 20.  The household also included his wife, Ruth Smith, age 25 (b. PA; father b. PA; mother b. NE) and employed as a feller in a clothing factory, who married 1st at age 15; daughter, Gertrude Smith, age 8 (b. NYS; parents b. PA); and son, Raymond Smith, age 6 (b. PA; parents b. PA).

 

1940 US Census: Izek Smith, age 40 (b. PA) and employed as a machinist helper in a Sayre shop, was heading a household at 101 Longway Street in Athens Borough, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  His residence was valued at $1,700, and he had completed 8th grade.  The household also included his wife, Ruth Smith, age 35 (b. PA), who had completed 2 years of high school; daughter, Gertrude Smith, age 18 (b. PA), who had completed 4 years of high school; son, Raymond Smith, age 16 (b. PA), who had completed 3 years of high school; and grandmother, Emma Bunnell, age 80 (b. PA).

 

Isaac Smith married Ruth E. (?) and resided at Athens, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  Isaac and Ruth raised the following children:

 

(1. Gertrude Anna Smith: (more info) Born 28 May 1921 in Barrington Township, Yates County, New York State; daughter of Nellie Fay (Smith) Benjamin.  Raised from birth by her aunt and uncle, Isaac and Ruth (?) Smith.

Rexford “Rex” Hamilton Smith: (photos) Born 5 September 1902 at South Waverly, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  Died Saturday, 11 April 1970 at Tioga County General Hospital, Waverly, New York; interred Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  Married Della Raquel Reyes (b. 17 Sep 1904 at Eagle Pass, Texas) and resided at Sayre, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  Rex and Della had the following children:

 

(1. Alfred E. Smith: (photos) (more info) Born 16 August 1928 at 41 Pitney Street, South Waverly, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  Died at home (331 N. Keystone Ave, Sayre) on Wednesday, 17 July 1996, age 67; interred Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  Graduated from Sayre High School, Sayre, Pennsylvania in 1953.  Was employed for 34 years (1958 – 1992) as a clerk in the Sayre Post Office.

 

(2. Frederick “Fred” Gilbert Smith: Born 26 February 1930 at 41 Pitney Street, South Waverly, Pennsylvania.  Died Saturday, 10 June 1972 at Lexington, Kentucky, age 42 years, 3 months, 2 weeks; interred Lexington Cemetery.  Married Dorothy Jewel Carroll in 1955 in Indiana and had the following children:

 

(a. Robert Michael Smith: Born 1955 at Lexington, Kentucky.

 

(b. James Lyndon Smith: Born 1957 at Buffalo, New York.

 

(c. Tracy Jean Smith: Born 1965 at Lexington, Kentucky.

 

(3. Beverly Joyce Smith “Joyce”: Born 1933 at 119 Draper Street, Sayre, Pennsylvania.  Married Eugene “Gene” Francis Barrett (b. 1931 at Waverly, N.Y.) at Waverly, New York in 1954 and resided at Angola, New York.  Joyce and Gene had the following children:

 

(a. Ann Marie Barrett: Born 1955 at Milliard Filmore Hospital, Buffalo, New York.  Married Carl Eugene Sutton, Jr. (b. 1952 at Sayre, PA) at Towanda, Bradford County, Pennsylvania in 1973 and had the following daughter:

 

(1) Tressa Leigh Sutton: Born 1974 at Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, Pennsylvania. 

 

(b. Tisa Michelle Barrett: Born 1959 at Children’s Hospital, Buffalo, New York.

 

i. George Milton Smith: Born 25 September 1904 at South Waverly, Pennsylvania.  Died there 7 January 1905, age 3 months, 13 days; interred Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.

 

j. Unnamed male: Still born 17 August 1906 at South Waverly, Pennsylvania.  His mother, Anna, died shortly after.  Both mother and baby were interred in Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, Pennsylvania.
