1.  Biographical notes:

 

Died 13 July 1829 in Cornwall Township, Litchfield County, Connecticut.  Resided there.  Was a Quaker.  Despite that, was a veteran of the Revolutionary War; enlisted June 1776 in Captain Roger's Company of the 2nd Battalion of Wadsworth's Brigade, which reinforced General Washington at New York City and participated in the Battle of Long Island and White Plains.  Mustered out 25 December 1776.  May also have served later at the Battle of Trenton.

 

In 1776 James worked the Reverend Hezekiah Gold's farm in Cornwall Township.

 

Was, physically, a very large man and had a jovial disposition.

Born ; perhaps daughter of Edward May of Cornwall, Litchfield County, Connecticut.  Died 20 May 1834.  Member of the Cornwall First Church as early as 1775.  Married James Sterling on 28 June 1767 in Cornwall Township.

Thomas Sterling: Born 6 December 1768 in Cornwall Township, Litchfield County, Connecticut.  Baptized there 1775 in the Cornwall First Church.  Died 26 November 1828, age 61; interred in the old Brooklyn Cemetery.  Employed as a wheel wright and cabinet/furniture maker.  Was a Quaker.  Married Mehitable Norton (d. 18 Sep 1827, age 60; interred with Thomas) and in 1812 moved to Hop Bottom (later Brooklyn) Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.  Thomas and Mehitable had the following child:

Isaac Sterling: Born 27 June 1773 in Cornwall Township, Litchfield County, Connecticut.  Baptized there 1775 in the Cornwall First Church.  Died fall 1849 in Dimock Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania; interred there without gravestone.  Married (1st) Urena Johnson (d. 19 Nov 1804 at home from consumption; interred Cornwall), daughter of Captain Amos, Jr. and Elizabeth (Pierce) Johnson, Jr. (who initially opposed the marriage based on Isaac's wealth), and had the following children:

 

(1. Isaac Hilliard Sterling: (photos) Born 28 May 1799 in Cornwall Township, Litchfield County, Connecticut.  Died 15 October 1882, age 82.  Moved to Brooklyn, Pennsylvania in 1810.

 

1840 US Census: Isaac H. Sterling, age 40 to 50 [Isaac would have been abt 41 yrs old], was heading a household in Brooklyn Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.  The household also included 2 males age 5 to 10; 3 males age 15 to 20; 1 female under age 5; and 1 female age 30 to 40.

 

1850 US Census: Isaac H. Sterling, age 51 (b. CT) and employed as farmer, was heading a household in Brooklyn Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.  His real estate was valued at $2,500.  The household also included Harriet Sterling, age 47 (b. NY); Ansel Sterling, age 25 (b. PA) and employed as a farmer; James H. Sterling, age 23 (b. PA) and employed as a farmer; Hannon Sterling, age 19 (b. PA) and employed as a farmer; Ralph Sterling, age 17 (b. PA) and employed as a farmer; Harriet Sterling, age 12 (b. PA); Charles M. Sterling, age 10 (b. PA); Julia Sterling, age 8 (b. CT; mother b. PA); son, Emerson Sterling, age 24 (b. PA; parents b. PA) and employed as a farmer; daughter-in-law, Jennie Sterling, age 17 (b. PA; parents b. PA); son, Merton Sterling, age 12 (b. PA) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Brooklyn Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.  The household also included his wife, Inez Sterling, age 24 (b. PA; parents b. PA); son, Earnest Sterling, age 1 (b. PA); and servant, Lydia Stephens, age 15 (b. PA; parents b. PA).  His suspected father, James Sterling, age 53, was heading a household next door.

 

Amos Sterling married Inez (?) and had the following son:

(2) Emerson Llewellyn Sterling: (photos) Born 3 May 1856 in Lathrop/Brooklyn Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.  Died there 25 September 1941, age 85 years, 4 months, 12 days, at home in Brooklyn Township from complications of old age (probably a heart attack); interred Mountain View Cemetery, Brooklyn Township, Pennsylvania.  Initially employed as a school teacher, then as a farmer.  Subsequently employed as a school janitor in Brooklyn Township and for many years was caretaker of Mt. View Cemetery.  Married Jennie/Jenny Delphia Eastman (photos) (b. 28 Jul 1863, d. 1 Apr 1944; interred with Emerson), daughter of Nathan Back and Rachel (White) Eastman, on 10 April 1880.  Jennie was employed as a seamstress.  Emerson and Jennie had the following children:

1.  Biographical notes:

 

Born 1769 in Cornwall Township, Litchfield County, Connecticut.  Baptized there in the Cornwall First Church.  Died 13 June 1828 in Antwerp Township, Jefferson County, New York.  In 1804 moved from Connecticut to Antwerp Township, New York (abt 1 mile north of Indian River).  Referred to as "Judge" Sterling, having been a justice of the peace and being generally trusted to arbitrate neighborhood conflicts.  Was the first Highway Commissioner of Antwerp Township and a Royal Arch Mason.

Born 14 July 1771 in England; daughter of John and Mary (Fitch) Bradford.  Died 12 October 1828.  Married Daniel Sterling on 25 July 1793.

b. Lieutenant Colonel James “Big Jim” Sterling: (photos) Born 25 January 1800 at Norwich, Connecticut (also seen: b. VT).  Died 23 July 1863 at Sterlingville, Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Was a large man, Physically, weighing 40 pounds at age 10 months and 200 pounds at age 14.  As an adult he stood 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighed 396 pounds.

 

Became acquainted with the Brownville area of Jefferson County, New York when his militia unit was sent there during the War of 1812 to repel a contingent of British forces.

 

Employed in the manufacture of iron; eventually known as "The Iron King of Northern New York."  In 1836 James purchased the Hopestill Foster land in Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, New York, where he developed the Sterling Iron Mines.  In 1840 he organized the Philadelphia Iron Company and constructed a charcoal-fired blast furnace for manufacturing pig iron in the Village named after him, Sterlingville.  In 1844 established a 2nd blast furnace at Sterlingburg, about 1 mile east of Antwerp, Jefferson County, and soon after purchased the furnace at Wegatchie, St. Lawrence County, New York.

 

1840 US Census: James, age 40 to 50, was heading a household in Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included 1 male under age 5; 2 males age 5 to 10; 1 male age 15 to 20; 1 male age 40 to 50; 1female under age 5; 1 female age 10 to 15; 1 female age 30 to 40; and 1 female age 60 to 70.

 

1850 US Census: James, age 50, b. VT, employed in the iron manufacturing industry, was heading a household in Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included Bing Sterling (age 17, b. NYS); James Sterling, Jr. (age 14, b. NYS); Rochester H. Sterling (age 12, b. NYS); David Sterling (age 3, b. NYS); May Stippard Sterling (age 1, b. NYS); Mary Laughlin (age 68, b. MA); Annie Sterling (age 41, b. VT); Mary Bradford Sterling (age 20, b. NYS); Julia Ann Sterling (age 12, b. NYS); and Jane Annette Sterling (age 9, b. NYS).

 

James Sterling married Annis/Annie Coleman (b. 23 May 1809, d. 6 Apr 1875 at Sterlingville, NY), daughter of Mary Richardson (Bullock) Coleman (b. 1781 at Huilford, VT, d. 18 Oct 1865) on 9 October 1826 at Antwerp, Jefferson County, New York and moved to Rossie, St. Lawrence County, New York.  Shortly thereafter they moved back to Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, where the Village of Sterlingville grew around the iron works he developed.  James and Annis had the following children:

Mary Bradford Sterling: Born 12 April 1830.  Died 16 March 1901 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  Driving force behind construction of Trinity Chapel at Great Bend, Champion Township, Jefferson County, New York and the Mission Chapel of the Redeemer, Watertown, Jefferson County. Authored 2 books and known for other intellectual pursuits.  Married George W. Clark (d. Jul 1886) on 27 May 1851; no children.

Alexander Pliny Sterling: (male) Born 21 September 1832 at Redwood, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 9 February 1899 at Canajoharie, New York.  Was associated with his father in the iron manufacturing business.  After his father died, Alexander ran the business until 1870, when he partnered with Edgar Peckham of New York.  The economic downturn of 1877 made the venture unprofitable.  At that point Alexander went into the flour and feed business with his brother, Daniel, at Carthage, Wilna Township, Jefferson County.

 

Married Elizabeth Garnham (d. 22 March 1898 at Antwerp, NY, in the same room she was married), daughter of Robert and Mary (Rush) Garnham, on 10 May 1853 at Antwerp, Jefferson County and had the following children:

James Sterling, Jr.: Born 10 March 1836.  Died 23 March 1902 at Great Bend, Champion Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Employed as a farmer.  About 1882 moved to Port Leyden, New York, where he was employed in the iron manufacturing business.  Later moved to Luther, Michigan, where he manufactured chemicals.  Married (1st) Mrs. Julia Clark Burlingame (d. 8 Jul 1863) on 2 October 1855 at Plessis, New York and had the following children:

Jane Antoinette/Annette Sterling "Madame Antoinette": Born 23 January 1841 at Sterlingville, Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Was an accomplished singer.  Married John Mackinlay (b. Perthshire, Scotland) on Easter Sunday, 28 March 1875 in the Chapel Royal, London, England and settled there.  Jane and John had the following children:

(6. Rochester Hungerford Sterling: Born 4 July 1844 at Sterlingville, Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Married Catharine Essington, daughter of Joseph and Mary (Allen) Essington, on 20 July 1867 and had the following children:

 

(a. Daniel Rochester Sterling: Born 10 February 1870 at Sterlingville, Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Married Lola Curran of Bristol, Illinois and had the following children:

(b. Mary Annis Sterling: Born 4 February 1876 at Independence, Missouri.  Married Silas Langdon on 15 January 1900 and had the following children:

(7. Daniel Boone Sterling: Born 27 May 1847.  Died 2 February 1878 at Great Bend, Champion Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Never married.

(9. George Sherman Sterling: Born January 1852.  Died as an infant.

 

(10. Joseph Nathaniel Sterling: Born 3 August 1854.  Employed as an insurance agent at Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  Married Ola Hall of Waucoma, Iowa; no children.

John Riley Sterling: Born 20 May 1802 in Connecticut.  Died 2 May 1867.  At age 5 moved with his parents to "Sterling Corners," (intersection of roads 31 and 41) Antwerp Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Employed there as a farmer; worked his father's roughly 400-acre farm.  Married Roxanna S. Church (b. 9 Dec 1807 at Chesterfield, NH, d. 14 June 1890), daughter of Ezra and Mercy (Farr) Church of Antwerp, Jefferson County, New York, on 27 January 1828 and had the following children: (also seen: Mayme Sterling)

 

(1. Howard Sterling: Born 8 November 1828 in Antwerp Township, Jefferson County, New York.

 

1900 US Census: Howard, age 71 (b Nov 1828 in NYS, parents b. MA), was heading a household in Antwerp Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Elizabeth Sterling (age 61 – b. Sep 1838 in NYS, father b. English speaking Canada, mother b. VT); daughter, Ella Sterling (age 41 – b. Mar 1859, single); and son, William Sterling (age 38 – b. Feb 1862).

 

Howard Sterling married Elizabeth Prudence Bigelow (b. Sep/11 Dec 1838), daughter of Ward and Sarah (Woodworth) Bigelow of Macomb, on 12 June 1855 and had the following children:

(e. Ezra Church Sterling: Born 29 November 1875.  Died 15 August 1885 (drowned in Indian River).

 

(f. Edward Bradford Sterling: Born 24 April 1878.  Died 10 September 1879.

 

(2. Bradford Sterling: Born 7 February 1832.  Died 7 December 1901 at Governeur, St. Lawrence County, New York.  Farmed the homestead farm until about 1891, when he moved to Governeur.  Never married. 

 

(3. Frances Elizabeth Sterling: Born 2 April 1835.  Died 13 February 1844.

 

(4. James Lloyd Sterling: Born 4 June 1838 in Antwerp Township, Jefferson County, New York.

 

1880 US Census: James, age 42 and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Antwerp Township, Jefferson County, New York.  His father was born in Connecticut and his mother was born in New Hampshire.  The household also included his wife, Mariette Sterling (age 35; her father was born in Vermont and her mother was born in New York State); son, Fred C. Sterling (age 15); John R. Sterling (age 13); George D. Sterling (age 4); Ella Briggs (age 19, James’ niece); and Alva Hicks (age 80; James’ father-in-law).  All were born in New York State.

 

1900 US Census: James, age 61 (b. Jun 1838 in NYS, father b. NYS, mother b. CT) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Antwerp Township.  The household also included his wife of 37 years, Mariette Sterling (age 56 – b. Aug 1843 in NYS, father b. VT, mother b. NYS, had 3 children and all were still alive); son, Fred Sterling (age 35 – b. Mar 1865 in NYS, as were his parents, single); son, John Sterling (age 32 – b. Dec 1867 in NYS, as were his parents, single); and son, George Sterling (age 24 – b. Sep 1875 in NYS, as were his parents, single).

 

By one account James Lloyd Sterling married Mariette Hicks, which appears to be supported by the 1900 US Census.  By another account he married Mariette Wait (b. Aug 1843), daughter of James D. and Mariette (Lawton) Wait of Antwerp, on 25 December 1863.  Both accounts have the following children:

 

(a. Frederick Conklin Sterling: Born 21 March 1865.  Never married.

 

(b. John Riley Sterling: Born 19 December 1867.  Never married.

 

(c. Georgia Bradford Sterling: Born 18 September 1875.

 

(5. Jane "Jennie" S. Sterling: Born 18 September 1840.  Married Allan M. MacGregor on 1 February 1869.  Allan was employed as an attorney at Antwerp, Jefferson County, New York.

 

(6. Ella Therese Sterling: Born 17 October 1848 in Antwerp Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Married Simeon H. Austin (d. 23 May 1897), a merchant of Fowler, New York, on 19 November 1890 and resided at Governeur, St. Lawrence County, New York.  Ella and Simeon had the following daughter:

 

(a. Pauline Sterling Austin: Born 12 November 1891.

 

(7. Julia Anna Sterling: Born 1 January 1852 in Antwerp Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 12 February 1889.  Married John C. McCartin (b. 1840 at Alexandria, Jefferson Co., NY, d. 2 Jul 1892) on 25 July 1873.  John was an attorney and prominent citizen of Watertown, Jefferson County.  Julia and John had the following son:

 

(a. George Sterling McCartin: Born 2 August 1878.  Graduated from Yale University.  Employed as an attorney in Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.

Born 26 June 1809 at Antwerp, Jefferson County, New York (1st white male born in Antwerp Twp).  Died 22 August 1885.  For many years was in the iron business with his brother, James.  Later was employed as a farmer at Sterlingville, Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, New York.

     

1840 US Census: Samuel G., age 20 to 30, was heading a household in Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included 1 male under age 5; 1 female age 20 to 30; and 1 female age 30 to 40.

 

1860 US Census: Samuel G. Sterling, age 51, was heading a household in Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Caroline Sterling, age 32; daughter, Adeline Sterling, age 11; daughter, Annis Sterling, age 9; son, Dan Sterling, age 7; son, Howard Sterling, age 5; daughter, Mary Sterling, age 3; son, Reley Sterling, age 1; Jane Taylor, age 19; and Thomas Malone, age 17.

 

1870 US Census: Samuel G. Sterling, age 60 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  His real estate was valued at $10,600 and his personal property was valued at $2,825.  The household also included his wife, Caroline Sterling, age 42 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS); daughter, Adaline Sterling, age 21 (b. NYS); daughter, Annis Sterling, age 19 (b. NYS); son, Dan Sterling, age 17 (b. NYS); daughter, Mary D. Sterling, age 13 (b. NYS); son, John R. Sterling, age 11 (b. NYS); and Reuben Williams, age 80 (b. MA), who was "past labor."

 

1880 US Census: Samuel Sterling, age 70 (b. NYS), was heading a household in Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Caroline Sterling, age 52 (b. NYS); daughter, Adiline Sterling, age 31 (b. NYS); son, Daniel Sterling, age 27 (b. NYS); son, John R. Sterling, age 21 (b. NYS); and daughter, Marry Sterling, age 23 (b. NYS).

(3. Daniel "Dan" Sterling: Born 20 November 1852 at Sterlingville, Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died at home on 21 September 1902.  Employed as a farmer in Wilna Township, Jefferson County.

 

1910 US Census: Florence, age 53, widowed, had had 3 children, all still alive, was heading a household on Wilna Road in Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included her daughter, Adaline (age 13); and daughter, Caroline (age 9).

 

Dan Sterling married Florence Mayne, daughter of Ever and Susannah (Smith) Mayne, on 8 October 1884 and had the following children:

 

(a. Julia P. Sterling: Born 24 February 1887.

 

(b. Adeline/Adaline Sterling: Born 14 January 1897.

 

(c. Caroline Sterling: Born 27 May 1900.

 

(4. Howard Sterling: Born 13 January 1854.  Died 8 May 1865.

Jan 1862, had had 6 children, all still alive); daughter, Amanda Sterling (age 18 – b. May 1882, single); daughter, Lena Sterling (age 13 – b. Nov 1886); daughter, Annis Sterling (age 13 –b. Feb 1887); Frank Sterling (age 11 – b. May 1889); and son, Paul Sterling (age 7 – b. Jan 1893). All, and their parents, were born in New York State.

 

John Riley Sterling married Sarah Evans (b. 1 Jan 1863/62), daughter of Samuel and Celestine (Vandewalker) Evans of Wilna Township, Jefferson County, on 30 October 1881 and had the following children:

(b. Mary Bradford Sterling: Born 21 October 1883.
