1. Biographical notes:

 

Born March 1832.  Died 9 September 1901; interred Gates Cemetery, Sterlingville, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Veteran of the American Civil War; served in the 10th NYS Heavy Artillery Regiment.

 

1850 US Census: Lorenzo Sweet, age 18 (b. NYS) resided in the household headed by Lucius V. Scott, age 31 (b. CT), in Wilna Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Apart from Lucius's family, the household also included Edwin Sweet, age 20 (b. NYS).

 

1855 NYS Census: Lorenzo Sweet, age 23 (b. Jefferson Co., NY) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Wilna Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He had resided in Wilna for 3 years.  The household also included his wife, Angeline Sweet, age 21 (b. Jefferson Co., NY).  She had resided in Wilna for 9 years.

 

1860 US Census: Lorenzo Sweet, age 28 (b. NYS) and employed as, was heading a household in Wilna Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Angeline Sweet, age 25 (b. NYS).

 

1865 NYS Census: Lorenzo Sweet, age 33 (b. Jefferson Co., NY) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Angeline Sweet, age 31 (b. Jefferson Co., NY); son, Melvin L. Sweet, age 1 (b. Jefferson Co., NY; and servant, Maria Obry, age 16 (b. Jefferson Co., NY) and single.

 

1870 US Census: Lorenzo Sweet, age 36 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  His personal property was valued at $800.  The household also included his wife, Angeline Sweet, age 34 (b. NYS); son, Malvin L. Sweet, age 6 (b. NYS); daughter, Hattie A. Sweet, age 4 (b. NYS); and farm laborer, Henry Sizeland, age 36 (b. NYS).

 

1880 US Census: Lorenzo Sweet, age 48 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Wilna Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Angeline Sweet, age 46 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS); son, Melvin L. Sweet, age 16 (b. NYS) and employed as a laborer; and daughter, Hattie A. Sweet, age 13 (b. NYS).

 

1900 US Census: Lorenzo Sweet, age 68 (b. Mar 1832 in NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife of 47 years, Angeline Sweet, age 65 (b. Jul 1834 in NYS; parents b. NYS), who had had 2 children, both still alive.

Briant, paragraph 4.c.(3.(a. of generation 3 of the Briant Annex about 1892 (age 26).
