"Bill" (also seen: "S. Palmer" as a teenager)

also known as (aka): William B. Palmer *

* Note: It appears from the 1905 and 1915 New York State Censuses that this William Palmer was named William B. Palmer at birth. However, as a teenager he was referred to as S. Palmer, and by the time of the 1920 and 1930 US Censuses, when he still resided with his parents, he was known as William S. Palmer, Jr. and William Palmer, Jr., respectively.Assuming the early records are correct, it seems likely he and/or his parents felt a mistake had been made in not initially naming him William S. Palmer, Jr., so they began doing so by at least 1920.When he married in 1939 he was referred to as William S. Palmer. From this history one might expect that if he named a son after himself, that son's name would be William S. Palmer, III, but not so.He did name his first son William Smith Palmer, but with suffix "Jr."At that point he (William B. Palmer) began referring to himself as William Smith Palmer, Sr., which he continued to do, formally and informally, for the remainder of his life.William B. Palmer's daughter, Diantha (Palmer) Kinney, recalled her father being angered when he saw his name written (in his opinion incorrectly) in the family Bible, at which time he changed the Bible entry.Diantha did not see the original Bible entry or the change, and, unfortunately, the Bible in question was loaned to a cousin, who refused to return it.
