MA) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Theresa Township, Jefferson County, New York.  His real estate was valued at $3,400.  The household also included his wife, Harriet, age 57 (b. CT); [daughter], Clarissa A. Green, age 34 (b. NYS); [granddaughter], Harriet E. Green, age 8 (b. NYS); [son], William L. West, age 30 (b.  NYS) and employed as a farmer; [son], Silas E. West, age 25 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer; [daughter], Harriet M. West, age 20 (b. NYS); and Jerome Matthews, age 14 (b. NYS), with no occupation recorded.

1850 US Census: Silas E. West, age 25, resided with his parents in Theresa Township, Jefferson County, New York.

 

1860 US Census: Edwin S. West, age 34 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Theresa Township (Theresa Post Office), Jefferson County, New York.  His real estate was valued at $1,700, and his personal property was valued at $880.  The household also included his wife, Harriet M. West, age 30 (b. NYS); son, William L. West, age 8 (b. NYS); and son, Silas G. West, age 1 (b. NYS).

 

1865 NYS Census: Silas L. West, age 40 (b. Jefferson Co., NY) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in a log house in Theresa Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He had been married once.  The household also included his wife, Harriet M. NYS; parents b.  NYS) and employed as a farm laborer, was heading a household in Theresa Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife of less than 1 year, Emma West, age 22 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed "keeping school."

 

1900 US Census: Silas G. West, age 41 (b. Jul 1858 in NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as a beaterman in a paper mill, was heading a household in the Village of Black River, Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife of 6 years, May V. West, age 29 (b. Sep 1870 in NYS; parents b. NYS), who had had 1 child, still alive; daughter, Grace E. West, age 14 (b. Jul 1885 in NYS; parents b. NYS); son, Garrett L. West, age 2 (b. 1920 US Census: Ira Herbison, age 43 (b. English-speaking Canada; parents b. English-speaking Canada) and employed as a wood worker in a paper mill, was heading a household at 611 Bradley Street in the City of Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.  He immigrated to the US in 1904; subsequently naturalized.  The household also included his wife, Grace Herbison, age 34 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS); son, Donald Herbison, age 3 years and 3 months (b. NYS); and boarder, Archibald Worden, age 88 (b. NYS; father b. VT; mother b. NYS) and widowed.

 

1930 US Census: Ira Herbison, age 52 (b. English-speaking Canada; parents b. English-speaking Canada) and employed as a house carpenter, was heading a household on Plessis Road in Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He immigrated to the US in 1907 (subsequently naturalized), and he married 1st at age 37.  The household also included his wife, Grace Herbison, age 44 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), who married 1st at age 29; son, Donald Herbison, age 13 (b. NYS); and daughter, Lou Mary Herbison, age 4 (b. NYS).

 

At age 29, when employed as a school teacher, married Ira Herbison (b. 27 Apr 1877 at Leeds, Leeds & Grenville County, Ontario, Canada, d. 1 Jan 1964 in Jefferson Co., NY; interred with Edith), age 38 and a residence of Plessis, New York, son of James (b. 1838 in Canada) and Mary Grace (Tennant) Herbison (b. 1848 in Canada), on 23 December 1914 (license issued 22 Dec 1914) in Jefferson County, New York and had the following children:

Donald West Herbison: Born 22 September 1916 at Plessis, Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 28 March 1998; interred Falls Cemetery, Greece Township, Monroe County, New York.  Veteran of World War II; served as a major in the US Army Air Corps.  Married Jean V. (?) (b. 1917).

Lou Mary Herbison: Born 9 October 1925 at Plessis, Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 20 October 1998 at La Fargeville, Orleans Township, Jefferson County, New York; interred there in Grove Cemetery.  Married Donald F. Duffany (b. 2 Jun 1930 at Orleans Four Corners, Orleans Twp, Jefferson Co., NY, d. there 2008; interred with Lou), son of Fred (b. 1891, d. 1953) and Beulah Grace (?) Duffany (b. 1890, d. 1976).

1925 NYS Census: Peter B. Bretsch, age 68 (b. US) was heading a household in Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Mary V. Bretsch, age 55 (b. US).

 

1930 US Census: Mary Bretsch, age 57 (b. NYS; father b. NYS; mother b. English-speaking Canada), widowed, and employed as a practical nurse, was heading a single-person household in Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  She married 1st at age 22, and her residence was valued at $2,000.  Of interest, the household headed by David Bretch, age 76 (b. NYS; parents b. Germany), was enumerated a few houses away on the same census page.  That household included David's wife, Ellen Bretch, age 76 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS).

 

1940 US Census: Of possible interest, there was a Mary Bretch, age 69 (b. NYS) who resided in the household headed by her cousin, Delbert French, age 75 (b. NYS) and widowed, on Riverside Avenue, Plessis, Theresa Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Mary had completed 5th grade [not consistent with being a practical nurse - see 1930 Census], and Delbert had completed 4th grade.

 

Mary Parker married (1st) Silas George West about 1894, shortly after the death of his 1st wife, Emma.

 

At age 45 widow Mary (Parker) West married (2nd), as his 2nd wife, widower Peter B. Bretsch (b. 1856 in Alexandria Twp, NY, d. 1928; interred Omar Cem., Alexandria Twp, Jefferson Co., NY), age 58, son of Philip (b. Germany) and Margaret (Paff) Bretsch (b. Germany), on 18 November 1914.  Peter had 1st married Corrie R. Greene (b. 1861, d. 1910), daughter of Mary J. Greene, about 1881 and had children.

1. Biographical notes:

 

Born 18 July 1897 in Theresa Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 9 January 1959; interred Saint Mary Cemetery, Evans Mills, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Veteran of World War I; served in the 62 Company of the 153rd Depot Brigade.  Was a rural mail carrier at Redwood, New York until 1938, then moved to Evans Mills, New York, where he continued to be a mail carrier until his death (21 miles).

 

1915 NYS Census: Garrett West, age 17, resided as a stepson in a household in Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.

 

1918 WWI Draft Registration: Garrett Lester West, age 21 (b. 18 Jul 1897 in Theresa Twp, Jefferson Co., NY) resided at RFD3, LaFargeville, Jefferson County, New York.  His father was born in Theresa Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He was self employed, and he named Mary Bretch as his nearest relative.

 

1925 NYS Census: Garrett L. West, about age 27, was heading a household in Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Fannie M. West, age about 22; and daughter, Elizabeth E. West, age about 3.

 

1930 US Census: Garrett L. West, age 32 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as a mail carrier doing rural delivery, was heading a household on Main Street in the Village of Redwood, Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He married 1st at age 23.  The household also included his wife, Veronica M. West, age 26 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), who married 1st at age 17; daughter, Elizabeth E. West, age 8 (b. NYS); daughter, Virginia M. West, age 4 years and 2 months (b. NYS); son, Robert J. West, age 1 year and 7 months (b. NYS); and boarder, Alcide T. Vainer, age 19 (b. Canada).

 

1940 US Census: Garrett L. West, age 42 (b. NYS) and employed as a mail carrier for the US Postal Service, was heading a household at 129 Main Street in the Village of Evans Mills, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He had completed 1 year of high school.  The household also included his wife, Veronica M. West, age 36 (b. NYS), who had completed 1 year of high school; daughter, Elizabeth E. West, age 18 (b. NYS), who had completed 3 years of high school; daughter, Virginia M. West, age 14 (b. NYS), who had completed 8th grade; son, Robert J. West, age 11 (b. NYS), who had completed 6th grade; daughter, Veronica M. West, age 8 (b. NYS), who had completed 2nd grade; and daughter, Marcella A. West, age 4 (b. NYS).  On 1 April 1935 they resided in rural Jefferson County.

Born 31 May 1903 at Redwood, New York, daughter of Frank (b. Redwood, NY) and Edna (House) Jerome (b. Theresa, NY) of Redwood, then Evans Mills (granddaughter of Mack Jerome).  Died 17 May 1964, age 60, from complications of a coronary occlusion at a relative’s residence at Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence County, New York.  Pronounced dead at A. Barton Hepburn Hospital, Ogdensburg; interred St. Mary’s Cemetery, Evans Mills, Jefferson County, New York.  At age 17 married Garrett Lester West, age 23, son of Silas George and Mary (Parker) West, on 25 October 1920 (license issued 16 Oct 1920 at Alexandria Bay, NY; recorded there 1 Jan 1921) in Rossie Township, St. Lawrence County, New York.  Of interest, Veronica also had a sister, Mrs. Fred (Ruth) Newman of Adams, New York.

 

Veronica graduated from Evans Mills High School and married Garrett West of Plessis, New York on 17 October 1920.  She was employed as a cafeteria manager by local school for 17 years (at Indian River Central School until her death in 1964).

b. Virginia M. West: Born 8 January 1926 at Redwood, Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 26 March 2005 at Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.  Employed as a registered nurse.  Married Glenn A. Watson, and resided on Church Street in Evans Mills, Jefferson County, New York.  Virginia and Glenn had the following children:

c. Robert J. West: Born 31 May 1928.  Died 8 November 1957, age 29; interred Saint Mary's Cemetery, Evans Mills, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Veteran of the Korean War.  Married Helen Petranchuk (b. 1928) and resided in New York.

 

d. Veronica "Fannie" M. West: (photos) Born about 1932 in New York.  Married Alfred Petranchuk, son of Mrs. Pauline Petranchuk, and resided at Evans Mills, Jefferson County, New York.  Alfred was employed as a rural mail carrier at Evans Mills.  He and Veronica had children. 

 

e. Marcella W. West: Born 22 June 1935 in New York.  Died 3 November 2010, age 75, at Evans Mills, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York; interred there in Saint Mary's Cemetery.  Married Leo Lawler and resided at Evans Mills, Jefferson County, New York.  Married (?) Lawler (photos) and had the following children: (order uncertain)

 

(1. Michele West: Married Alonzo Carlton and in 2010 resided in New York.

 

(2. Edward West: Married Mary Anne (?) and in 2010 resided in Texas.

 

(3. Sharon West: Married (?) Lobdell and in 2010 resided in Iowa.

4   Elizabeth "Betty" Edna West:

 

Born 28 November 1921 in Jefferson County, New York.  Died 25 October 2009, age 88, at the Samaritan Keep Nursing Home, Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.  Married Harlow "Hap" Clifton Riordan, paragraph 3.f. of generation 4 of the Riordan Annex on 20 October 1942.
