Born 3 October 1673.  Died 5 November 1734 in Essex County, New Jersey.

Born 29 February 1680 at Milford, Connecticut, daughter of Josiah (b. 1642 at Milford, New Haven Co., CN, d. there 2 Nov 1683) and Merly (Camp) Baldwin (b. 21 Apr 1652 in New Haven County, CN).  Died 10 February 1722 at Union, New Jersey.

Born 1698/7 at Elizabethtown, Essex County, New Jersey.  Died 1740 at Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.

 

2.  Wife: Ann Creighton

 

Born 1697 at Elizabethtown, Essex County, New Jersey, daughter of James Creighton (b. 1671).  Died there after 26 November 1726.

a. John Winans: Born 20 September 1719 at Elizabethtown, Essex County, New Jersey.  Died 7 December 1783 at Hardistown, Mercer County, New Jersey.  Married Jemima Bryant.

 

b. Isaac Winans: Born 1724 at Elizabethtown, Essex County, New Jersey.  Died 1769.

d. (?) Winans: Born 1727 at Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.

3   Adjutant Jacob/Jacop Winans

 

1.  Biographical notes:

 

Born 26 November 1726/5 at Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.  Died 1810 at Milton, Trumbull County, Ohio.  Per John Addison Biles, Jacob “was a tall man of genteel mien, wore a cocked hat, a que, a swallow tailed coat, vest, knee pants, and stockings, and low shoes with silver buckles.”

 

When the British invaded New York and New Jersey, burning his residence and mill, Jacob moved his family to a cabin in Monroe County, Pennsylvania.  Moved to Ohio in 1807 and died there at age 84 years, 4 days in 1810.  Spent his latter years living with his children.

 

2.  Wife #1: Rebeccah Phoebe Clark

 

a. Biographical notes:

 

Born 1727 at Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.  Died 15 December 1758 in New Jersey.  Daughter of Jotham/Jonathan and Sarah (?) Clark.  Married Jacob in 1748 at Elizabethtown.

 

b. Children:

 

(1) Jacob Winans, Jr. #1: Born 1749 at Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.  Captured early in the Revolutionary War and died of starvation in a prison ship in New York Harbor.

 

(2) Clark Winans: Born 15 December 1751 at Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.  Served in the Revolutionary War.  Settled at Big Flats near Elmira, New York.

 

(3) Jotham Winans: Born 1753 at Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.  Served in the Revolutionary War.  Married Mary Mathew.

 

(4) Phoebe/Phebe Winans:  See generation 2, below.

 

According to John Addison Biles, Phoebe was “a woman of small stature, silken hair, blue eyes, and a resolute” disposition – with a “constitution of iron.”  She had to grow up early.  Her mother died while her father was away with his older sons participating in the Revolutionary War, which left the care of her younger siblings to herself in a hostile wilderness environment.  “She witnessed the destruction resulting from Indian raids and saw some of the dead they slaughtered.  She stood guard many nights to protect her brood of children and one stormy night a colored scout sent from Depew’s fort tapped on the window and told her that the Indians were skulking in the foot hills, and that she must secrete the family in the swamp until day break, and then hasten to the fort.  She quietly dressed the children in the dark, took along blankets, hid them in the thicket of the swamp, stood guard and a the first peep of day, hastened to the fort with them.”

(2) Mathew Winans: Married Betsy Place, daughter of Peleg and Anna (Bensley) Place (see generation 3, paragraph 3 of the Place Annex.

 

(3) Abigail Winans: Married Samuel Seeley.

 

(4) Daniel Winans: Married Margaret Depew.

 

(5) Isaac Winans: Served in the Revolutionary War.  Married Eleanor Delong.

(1) James Winans: Married Hannah Bunnell.

Born 15 December 1758 at Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.  Died 9 May 1845 at Porterville (Lime Hill), Bradford County, Pennsylvania (or Strouds, Monroe Co., PA).  Married James Place, generation 2 of the Place Annex, about 1781.
