Origin of the surname “Wolcott:”

Ancient Wolcott Coat of Arms:

# Wolcott Coat of Arms (2).jpg

Shield: Argent a Cheveron between three Chess Rooks ermined. (the chess rooks were introduced early in the 15th century by a Wolcott knight who, according to family records, was “Playing at ye chesse with Henry ye fifte, kind of Englande, he gave hym ye cheke matte with ye rouke, whereupone ye kings changed his coate of armes which was ye crosse with flower de lures, and gave him ye rouke for a remembrance.”)

Crest: A Bull’s Head erased argent, armed or, ducally gorged, lined, and ringed, of the last.

Motto: Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri (from Latin poet Horace, which means, literally, “Accustomed to swear in the words of no master.”  Referring to how a student might repeat information provided by a teacher, it means Wolcotts take nothing purely on trust, but rather, think and decide for themselves.  Somewhat similar to President Ronald Reagan’s often used motto during the Cold War: “Trust, but verify!”

During the reign of King Charles I many Englishmen looked to America as a place to escape religious, civil, and economic pressures.  Henry Wolcott of Tolland, Somersetshire, England traveled to America about 1628 and returned to emigrate with his wife and sons Henry, Jr., Christopher, and George aboard the “Mary and John” ( 1st vessel in the 17-vessel “Winthrop Fleet”), which left Plymouth, Devon County, England on 20 March 1630 and arrived in the vicinity of modern day Boston, Massachusetts on 30 May 1630, settling at Dorchester.  Henry’s daughters, Anna and Mary, and his 5 year old son, Simon, remained in England until there was a suitable home in America for them.  In 1936 moved to Windsor, Connecticut.

Grace married (1st) Charles F. Sidman (d. 1909) of Dexter, Jefferson County, New York on 31 August 1904.  Charles owned and operated a jewelry business in the village of Black River, where they resided.  Grace and Charles had the following children:

a. Harlan G. Sidman: (photos) (more info) Born 13 May 1906 at Black River, New York, Jefferson County, New York.  Died Thursday, 1 February 1973, age 66, at the House of the Good Samaritan Hospital, Watertown, New York, where he had been a patient since 21 January; interred Black River Cemetery.  Spent his early life in Black River, then moved with his mother and step-father to Harrisville, New York.  Graduated from Harrisville High School and the Dieberts’s Business School.  Was employed first as a stenographer for the St. Joe Lead Company at Edwards, New York, then in the same capacity for the New York Air Brake Company, Watertown, New York, followed by the New York Central Railroad.  In later life resided at Rochester, New York.  Just prior to death resided with his aunt and uncle, Edna and Briant Drake of Evans Mills, New York.

Of interest, Ray was acquainted with Truman James Rowell, who worked at a gas station in Rochester, and Cyd's 1st cousin, Ruth Helen Drake, moved to Rochester about 1935 to find work.  Ruth may have resided with Cyd and Ray, at least initially, in Rochester, and it was through Cyd and Ray that she met and eventually married Truman on 20 June 1937 at Rochester.

William Humes graduated from Harrisville schools and the Ive Seminary at Antwerp, Jefferson County, New York.  His father owned and operated “The Forest Home,” a hotel for hunters and fishermen located about 5 miles from Harrisville.  In 1898 William moved to Elwha, Washington, near Seattle, and purchased a tract of land there where he planned to guide hunters and provide hiking and horseback tours of the surrounding area.  His brother, Grant, joined him in the enterprise, and stayed in Washington after William sold Grant his interest in the property in 1915 and returned to Harrisville, New York.  He married Grace (Wolcott) Sidman shortly thereafter.

In 1930/32 Grace and William moved from Harrisville to LeRaysville, New York, where they owned and operated a small farm on the Evans Mills – LeRaysville Road between the George E. Drake residence and the Village of LeRaysville (map).  In 1941, about 3 years after Williams death, Grace sold the farm to the US Government (as did her neighbors, to facilitate expansion of Pine Camp) and moved into the village of Evans Mills to reside with her sister, Edna, and Edna’s husband, Charles Briant Drake, who had also been forced to move from the Drake farm near LeRaysville to accommodate the expansion of Pine Camp.  Later Grace moved to Fairport (SE of Rochester), Perinton Township, Monroe County, New York to reside with her daughter, Celestia, returning to Evans Mills each summer to visit Edna and Briant.  In 1965 Grace moved to the Madonna Home, an assisted living facility in Watertown, New York, where she died 20 April 1969.
