1. Biographical notes:

 

Perhaps born about 1825 in Ireland (also seen: b. abt 1832).  Died 15 August 1879 from complications of a self-inflicted wound to his throat in Monmouth Township, Warren County, Illinois; Illinois death records indicate he was single at the time.

 

1850 US Census: Of possible interest, a Garrett Ahern, age 25 (b. Ireland) was a prisoner in St. Louis, Missouri.

 

1860 US Census: Of possible interest, a Garrit Ahern, age 25 (b. Ireland) and employed as a farmer, resided in the household headed by Mike Gleason, age 27, at Springfield, Sangomon County, Illinois.  Garrit's personal property was valued at $300.

 

1870 US Census: No clear record found.

 

2. Wife: Ellen Mar Chapin

 

Born 28 October 1836 in Granville Township, Washington County, New York; daughter of Alvin (b. 3 Sep 1798 in Heath Twp, Franklin Co., MA, d. 29 Oct 1884) and Mary "Polly" (Brewster) Chapin (b. 22 Oct 1796 in CT/VT, d. 30 Jun 1882 in Waltham Twp, LaSalle Co., IL).  Died 13 February 1922 in Des Moines Township, Boone County, Iowa; interred Missouri.  Married (1st) Garrett Hooper Ahern on 23 March 1869 at La Salle, La Salle Co., IL); perhaps divorced about 1869 (since Ellen was referred to by her maiden name, Chapin, in 1870, while part of her father's household, and at the same time her 8-month-old son, Frank, had surname Ahern).

 

Ellen (Chapin) Ahern married (2nd) Edward Marshall Lennox (b. 11 Mar 1832 in Aughrim, Co. Londonderry, Ireland, d. 9 May 1910 in West Plains Twp, Howell Co., MO), who was employed as a farmer, and apparently had 1 child, who died before 1900.  Edward and Ellen (Chapin)(Ahern) Lennox were divorced before 1900.

 

1850 US Census: Alvin Chapin, age 52 (b. MA) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Waltham Township, LaSalle County, Illinois.  His real estate was valued at $1,000.  The household also included his wife, Mary Chapin, age 54 (b. ?, perhaps PA or VT); son, Oscar Chapin, age 22 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer; daughter, Clarissa Chapin, age 21 (b. NYS); son, John Chapin, age 17 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer; daughter, Ellen Chapin, age 13 (b. NYS); and son, Alvin Chapin, age 10 (b. NYS).

 

1860 US Census: Alvin Chapin age 61 (b. VT) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Waltham Township, LaSalle County, Illinois.  His real estate was valued at $6,000, and his personal property was valued at $1,500.  The household also included his wife, Mary Chapin, age 63 (b. VT); son, John Chapin, age 27 (b. NYS); daughter, Ellen Chapin, age 23 (b. NYS); son, Alvin Chapin, age 20 (b. NYS); John Hunt?, age 23 (b. OH) and employed as a farm laborer; and James Larnall?, age 17 (b. Ireland) and employed as a farm laborer.

 

1870 US Census: Alvin Chapin, age 71 (b. MA) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Waltham Township, LaSalle County, Illinois.  His real estate was valued at $8,000 and his personal property was valued at $1,500.  The household also included his wife, Mary Chapin, age 73 (b. VT); daughter, Ellen Chapin, age 23 (b. NYS); James Dougherty, age 19 (b. TN) and employed as a farm laborer; and Frank Ahern, age 8 months (b. Sep 1869 in IL). (enumerated 17 Aug 1870)  Of interest, the households headed by Alvin Chapin, Jr., age 30 (b. NYS) and Oscar Chapin, age 42 (b. NYS) were enumerated next door.

 

1880 US Census: Ed M. Lennox, age 47 (b. Scotland; parents b. Scotland) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Union Township, Benton County, Indiana.  The household also included his wife, Ellen M. Lennox, age 41 (b. NYS; father b. MA; mother b. VT); step-son, Frank N. Ahern, age 11 (b. IL; father b. Ireland; mother b. NYS), in school and employed doing farm labor; and hired man, Jacob W. Lonylond, age 39 (b. NYS; father b. PA; mother b. Canada) and employed doing farm labor.

Born 21 October 1869 (1870 US Census record says b. Sep 1869) in Waltham Township, La Salle County, Illinois.  Died 3 April 1951 in Douglas County, Missouri; interred Mount Tabor Cemetery, Ava, Douglas County, Missouri.  Employed as a clergyman.

 

1900 US Census: (enumerated 2 Jun 1900) Frank Ahern, age 30 (b. Oct 1869 in IL; father b. IL; mother b. NYS) and employed as a clergyman, was heading a household in Marion Township, Mercer County, Missouri.  The household also included his wife, Anna Ahern, age 24 (b. Dec 1875 in TN; parents b. TN), who had had no children [but was pregnant, and died from complications of child birth about 2 weeks later]; and mother, Ellen M. Lennox, age 62 (b. Oct 1837 in NYS; father b. MA; mother b. VT) and divorced, who had had 2 children, 1 of whom was still alive.

 

1910 US Census: Frank N. Ahern, age 40 (b. IL; parents b. unknown) and employed as a Methodist clergyman, was heading a household at 312 Sheridan Avenue, in the City of Shenandoah, Grant Township, Page County, Iowa.  He had been married twice.  The household also included his wife of 10 years, Lena E. Ahern, age 26 (b. MO), who had been married once and had had 4 children, all still alive; son, Robert N. Ahern, age 7 (b. MO); son, Alvin A. Ahern, age 4 (b. IA); daughter, Anna L. Ahern, age 2 (b. IA); son, Benjiman T. Ahern, age 2 months (b. IA); and boarder, Eunice L. Medlock, age 12 (b. MO; father b. MO; mother b. IN).

 

1920 US Census: Frank Ahern, age 50 (b. IL; father b. NYS; mother b. KY) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household on Rock Bridge Road in Burdine Township, Texas County, Missouri.  The household also included his wife, Rena Ahern, age 35 (b. MO; parents b. MO); son, Albert Ahern, age 17 (b. MO) and single; son, Alvin Ahern, age 14 (b. IA); daughter, Anna Ahern, age 12 (b. IA); son, Dwaine Ahern, age 6 (b. IA); and daughter, Ellen Ahern, age 3 years and 10 months (b. IA).

 

1930 US Census: No clear record found.

 

1940 US Census: Frank N. Ahern, age 70 (b. IL) and employed as a minister, was heading a household at 109 West Broadway Street in El Dorado Springs, Box Township, Cedar County, Missouri.  He had completed 8th grade.  The household also included his wife, Lena Ahern, age 56 (b. MO), who had completed 8th grade; son, Benton Ahern, age 18 (b. MO), single, and in school, who had completed 6th grade; and boarder, James J. Overton, age 41 (b. Joplin, MO) and employed as a Minister of the Gospel, who had completed 6th grade.  On 15 April 1935 Frank, Lena, and Benton resided in the same house; James resided in the same township.

Hudgins (b. 1882 in KS).

Born 19 August 1905 in Iowa.  Died 28 December 1997 in Litchfield Township, Hartfield County, Connecticut.  Employed as Methodist Minister and Professor of Theology.  Resided at Seattle, Washington; New York City, and Long Island.

 

1930 US Census: There was an Alvin A. Ahern, age 24 (b. IA; father b. IL; mother b. MO), single, and employed as a public school teacher, boarded in the household headed by Mary M. Bailey, age 62 (b. IA; father b. OH; mother b. MA) and widowed, in Bennington Township, Ottawa County, Kansas.

 

1940 US Census: Alvin Ahern, age 34 (b. IA) and employed as head master and teacher, residing at the Home for Fundless and Female Guardian Society in Bronx County, New York.  He had completed 5 years of college.  His wife, Helen Ahern, age 30 (b. IA) and employed as a house mother, resided with him; she had completed 5 years of college.  In April 1935 they both resided in Manhattan, New York.

Born February 1910 in Iowa; daughter of Orville John (b. 7 Mar 1872 in Palmyra Twp, Jefferson Co., WI, d, 1938) and Evaline (Dryer) Green (b. 10 Feb 1870 in WI, d. 10 Feb 1951 in McPherson Co., KS).  Died 2001.
