1850 US Census: Ezra Beals, age 33 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Wheeler Township, Steuben County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Catharine Beals, age 33 (b. NYS); son, Sylvester Beals, age 17 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer; daughter, Catharine Beals, age 15 (b. NYS); son, Harlan Beals, age 12 (b. NYS); and Clark Everet, age 30 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer.  Of interest, Luther Beal, age 25, and his family resided close by.

 

1870 US Census: Ezra Beals, age 63 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Wheeler Township, Steuben County New York.  His real estate was valued at $8,000 and his personal property was valued at $1,500.  The household also included his wife, Caty Beals, age 60 (b. NYS); son, Harlow Beals, age 30 (b. NYS) and employed as a teamster; and John More, age 18 (b. NYS) and employed on the farm.

CT) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Wheeler Township, Steuben County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Kali Beals, age 68 (b. NYS; father b.  PA; mother b. NY).  Of interest, Sylvester Beals, age 48 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading nearby household.

1860 US Census: Sylvester Beals, age 28 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Wheeler Township, Steuben County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Sophia Beals, age 23 (b. NYS); Maocedo (sp) Beals (female), age 4 (b. NYS); and Henry Beals, age 13 (b. NYS).

 

1870 US Census: Sylvester Beals, age 38 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household Wheeler Township, Steuben County, New York.  His real estate was valued at $2,500 and his personal property was valued at $1,500.  The household also included his wife, Sophia Beals, age 39 (b. NYS); and son, Fred Beals, age 5 (b. NYS).  Of interest, Ezra Beals, age 63, was heading a household close by [enumerated same Census page].

 

1880 US Census: Sylvester Beals, age 48 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Wheeler Township, Steuben County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Sophia Beals, age 45 (b. NYS; father b. NYS; mother b. CT); son, Fred Beals, age 15; and Roy Brush, age 19 (b. NYS).  Of interest, Ezra Beals, age 75 (b. NYS) was heading a nearby household.

1900 US Census: Thos J. Redhead, age 50 (b. Jan 1850 in NYS; parents b. England) and employed as a contractor and builder, was heading a household at 261 S. 6th Street in the Village of Fulton, Volvey Township, Oswego County, New York.  The household also included his wife of 25 years, Catherine A. Redhead, age 50 (b. May 1850 in NYS), who had had no children; nephew, Claud H. Beals, age 20 (b. Mar 1880 in NYS; parents b. NYS), single, and employed as a clerk in a furniture store; and niece, Myrta Beals, age 17 (b. Oct 1882 in NYS; parents b. NYS) and still in school.

1. Biographical notes:

 

Born about 1840 in Steuben County, New York.  Died .  Employed as a hardware merchant.  Veteran of the US Civil War; served in Companies D and G in the 58th NY National Guard Infantry Regiment; applied for a pension for his service.

 

1875 NYS Census: Harlo K. Beals, age 35 (b. Steuben Co., NYS) and at "leasure," was heading a household in Avoca Township, Steuben County, New York.  His dwelling was valued at $1,800.  The household also included his wife, Almira L. Beals, age 28 (b. Washington Co., NY); and son, Otis F. Beals, age 1 year and 5 months (b. Steuben Co., NYS).

 

1880 US Census: Harlo K. Beals, age 40 (b. NYS) and employed as hardware merchant, was heading a household in Avoca Township, Steuben County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Elmira Beals, age 32 (b. NYS); son, Otis F. Beals, age 6 (b. NYS); and boarder, Oliver C. Ladue, age 45 (b. NYS) and employed as a tin smith.

Born 1848 in Washington County, New York; daughter of Albert and Almira (McLean) Billings.  Baptized 25 August 1848 in the First United Presbyterian Congregational Church, Cambridge, Washington County, New York.  Died .

 

1850 US Census: Elisha Billings, age 58 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Jackson Township, Washington County, New York.  His real estate was valued at $6,000.  The household also included his wife, C. Amanda Billings, age 58 (b. NYS); daughter, Catherine Billings, age 22 (b. NYS); and son, John Billings, age 16 (b. NYS) and employed as a laborer.  The household also include the Tyrus W. Hurd (age 33, b. VT) family; Tyrus was employed as a physician.  Of interest, his next door neighbor was the household headed by Albert Billings, age 33.

 

1850 US Census: Albert Billings, age 33 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Jackson Township, Washington County, New York.  His real estate was valued at $2,500.  The household also included his wife, Almira Billings, age 29 (b. NYS); son, Otis Billings, age 11 (b. NYS); son, William W. Billings, age 8 (b. NYS); son, Henry E. Billings, age 5 (b. NYS); daughter, Almira L. Billings, age 3 (b. NYS); daughter, Catharine A. Billings, age 1 (b. NYS); Lois Clapp/Class, age 59 (b. NYS); and Catharine Clapp/Class, age 35 (b. NYS).

Washington Co., NY) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Jackson Township, Washington County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Catherine Billings, age 63 (b. Washington Co., NY); grandchild, Elisha Billings, age 10 (b. Washington Co., NY); grandchild, Almira Billings, age 7 (b. Washington Co., NY); and two servants.

 

1860 US Census: Albert Billings, age 42 and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Wheeler Township, Steuben County, New York.  His real estate was valued at $4,750 and his personal property was valued at [incomprehensible].  The  household also included his wife, Almira Billings, age 39; son, Otis Billings, age 21; son, Wallace Billings, age 18; son, Elisha Billings, age 15; daughter, Almira billings, age 13; daughter, Katy Billings, age 11; son, Philomon Billings, age 7; son, Albert Billings, age 5; son, Oscar Billings, age 1; and son, Edgar Billings, age 1.

a. Otis F. Beals: Born January 1874 in New York.  Died 31 January 1904 in Wayland Township, Steuben County, New York; interred there in the Wayland Village Cemetery.  Employed as a farmer.

 

1900 US Census: Otis F. Beals, age 26 (b. Jan 1874 in NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Wheeler Township, Steuben County, New York.  The household also included his wife of 3 years, M. Emma Beals, age 27 (b. Apr 1873 in NYS; parents b. NYS), who had had 2 children, both still alive; son, Harlow P. Beals, age 2 (b. Nov 1897 in NYS); and daughter, Maurine K. Beals, age 3 months (b. Feb 1900).

 

1905 NYS Census: Emma P. Beals, age 33 and employed as a stenographer, was heading a household in Wayland Township, Steuben County, New York.  The household also included her son, Harlo P. Beals, age 7; an daughter, Maurine C. Beals, age 5.

 

1910 US Census: Emma Beals, age 37 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), widowed, and employed as a secretary for a law firm, was heading a household on Washington Street in Wayland Township, Steuben County, New York.  The household also included her son, Harlow Beals, age 12 (b. NYS); daughter, Maurine Beals, age 10 (b. NYS); and mother, Mrs. Mary Peabody, age 63 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), who was married once for 44 years and had had 6 children, 5 of whom were still alive.

 

Otis F. Beals married M. Emma Peabody, daughter of Mary (?) Peabody, and had the following children:

 

(1. Harlo Peabody Beals: (more info) Born 14 November 1897 in Avoca Township, Steuben County, New York.  Died 19 March 1982, age 84, in Polk County, Florida.  Employed as Farm Bureau Manager.

 

1930 US Census: Harlo P. Beals, age 32 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as field manager for the grange league, was heading a household at 52 Bearer Street in Cooperstown, Otsego County, New York.  His real estate was valued at $5,200 and he was married at age 27.  The household also included his wife, Margaret L. Beals, age 33 (b. MD; father b. OH; mother b. MD), who was married at age 28; son, Harlo Beals, Jr., age 3 years and 5 months (b. NYS); son, Burton L. Beals, age 3 months (b. NYS); and Alexander Hall, age 23 (b. NYS; parents b. Scotland), who was employed as a child welfare secretary.

 

Harlo P. Beals, age 27, married Margaret Loomis Bostwick (b. Easton, MD), age 28, daughter of Berton L. and Fannie (Lane) Bostwick on 23 June 1925 (license issued 13 Jun 1925) at Cooperstown, Otsego County, New York and had the following children:

 

(a. Harlo Peabody Beals, Jr.: Born 3 October 1926.  Died 28 July 2014 at Cooperstown, Otsego County, New York; interred there in Lakewood Cemetery.  Enlisted 15 January 1945 for service during and after World War II.  Resided last at Plant City, Florita.  Perhaps married Louita H. (?) and had the following son:

 

(1) Harlo P. Beals: (perhaps) Born 14 November 1997.  Resided at Ithaca, Cayuga County, New York.

 

(2. Maurine K. Beals: Born February 1900 in New York.

 

b. Harlo Claud Beals "Claud": (more info) Born 14 March 1881 in Avoca Township, Steuben County, New York.  Died February 1964, age 83, in Cayuga County, New York.  Before marriage resided at Rochester, Monroe County, New York, where he was employed as a salesman.

 

1940 US Census: Harlo C. Beals, age 59 (b. NYS) and employed as a wholesale salesman of men's furnishings, was heading a household in Rochester, Monroe County, New York.  His real estate was valued at $3,000 and he had completed 3 years of high school.  The household also included his wife, Emma G. Beals, age 59 (b. NYS), who had completed 3 years of high school.

 

Harlo C. Beals married, as her 2nd husband, Emma Gertrude (Coons) Crawford, daughter of Elijah M. and Phyla A. (Wheeler) Coons of Wayland Township, New York, on 28 June 1919 in Geneseo Township, Steuben County, New York.  Before marriage Gertrude was employed as a saleslady.  Harlo and Emma had the following children:

4   Myrta L. Beals:

 

Born October 1882 in Avoca Township, Steuben County, New York.  Died 30 September 1956 in Fulton Township, Oswego County, New York.  Married Albert Norton Hudson, generation 2 of the Hudson Annex on 8 June 1904 at the home of her Uncle Thomas Redhead in Fulton.
