Born February 1849 in Germany.  Died 23 September 1933 in Saint Louis County, Minnesota.  Changed the spelling of his surname from Bolting to Belting.

 

1870 US Census: No record found.

 

1880 US Census: No record found.

 

1885 IA Census: Joseph Belting, age 32 (b. Germany) and employed as a miner, was heading a household on Coal Street in the Village of Cleveland, Jackson Township, Lucas County, Iowa [was a small mining town that did not exist for long].  The household also included his wife, Sarah Belting, age 34 (b. England); John Phillips, age 17 (b. England) and employed as a miner; Samuel Phillips, age 15 (b. England) and employed as a miner; Isaac Phillips, age 14 (b. England) and employed as a miner; Annie Phillips, age 6 (b. WI); Lizzie Belting, age 3 (b. Lucas Co., IA); and Frank Belting, age 1 (b. Union Co., IA).

 

1900 US Census: Joseph Belting, age 51 (b. Feb 1849 in Germany; parents b. Germany) and employed as an iron ore miner, was heading a household in Ishpeming City, Marquette County, Michigan.  He immigrated to the US in 1865 and subsequently became a naturalized citizen.  The household also included his wife of 19 years, Sara Belting, age 42 (b. Apr 1858 in England; parents b. England), who immigrated to the US in 1875 (no record of naturalization) and had had 8 children, 7 of whom were still alive; daughter, Licie Belting, age 18 (b. Apr 1882 in OH) and single, with no occupation recorded; son, Frank Belting, age 17 (b. Jan 1883 in OH), single, and employed as a framer; and daughter, Lely Belting, age 14 (b. Jan 1886 in OH), single, and in school.

1918 WWI Draft Registration: Frank Belting, age 36 (b. 8 Jan 1882) and employed as foreman in the Clev. Cliff Power Plant, Forestville, Marquette County, Michigan, resided at 624 E. Civ. Street, Ishpeming, Marquette County, Michigan.  He named his father (no name provided) of Hibbing, St. Louis County, Minnesota as his nearest relative.

 

1942 WWI Draft Registration: Frank Joseph Belting, age 58 (b. 8 Jan 1884 in Iowa), with no special place to stay, resided at Ishpeming, Michigan.  He named Mrs. Mary Bonetti of 11 E. Pearl Street, Ishpeming, as someone who would always know his address.

 

At age 25 Frank Belting married Ida Sanders, age 22, daughter of Fred and Josephine (Hebert) Sanders, on 8 May 1909 in St. Joseph's Church, Ishpeming, Marquette County, Michigan, witnessed by Albert Sanders and Adeline Belting.
