Born September 1866 in New York.  Died 18 September 1914; interred Forest Lawn Cemetery, Buffalo, Erie County, New York.

 

1900 US Census: William Bishop, age 34 (b. Sep 1866 in NYS; father b. English speaking Canada; mother b. NYS) and employed as a butcher, was heading a household at 325 Herkimer Street in the City of Buffalo, Erie County, New York.  The household also included his wife of 2 years, Viola Bishop, age 32 (b. Apr 1868 in NYS; father b. England; mother b. English speaking Canada); son, Arthur C. Bishop, age 6 (b. Feb 1894 in NYS); son, William J. Bishop, age 1 (b. May 1899 in NYS); and servant, Tina Francal, age 20 (b. Mar 1880 in English speaking Canada; parents b. Germany) and single.

 

1905 NYS Census: William J. Bishop, age 39 (b. US) and employed in the retail meat business, was heading a household at 325 Herkimer Street in the City of Buffalo, Erie County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Viola Bishop, age 36 (b. US); son, William J. Bishop, 6 (b. US); and son, Arthur Bishop, age 11 (b. US).

 

1910 US Census: William Bishop, age 42 (b. NYS; father b. English speaking Canada; mother b. NYS) and employed as a butcher in his own shop, was heading a household at 337 Connecticut Street in the City of Buffalo, Erie County, New York.  He had been married once.  The household also included his wife of 12 years, Viola Bishop, age 38 (b. NYS; father b. England; mother b. English speaking Canada), who had been married twice and had had 3 children, 2 of whom were still alive; stepson, Arthur Bishop, age 16 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and single, with no occupation recorded; and son, William Bishop, age 11 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS).

 

2. Wife: Viola (?) (?)

 

Born April 1868 in New York State; perhaps adopted daughter of George W. and Caroline "Carrie" C. (?) Vedder of Tonawanda, Erie County, New York.

 

1870 US Census: Of possible interest, Thomas Barnes, age 28 (b. England) and employed as a grocery clerk, was heading a house in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.  The household also included, Hester Barnes, age 29 (b. NYS); Frank Barnes, age 4 (b. NYS); and Viola Barnes, age 2 (b. NYS). [would be a better candidate for Viola's parents if Hester was born in Canada]

 

1880 US Census: Of more interest, there was a George W. Vedder, age 40 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed operating a home store, heading a household in Tonawanda Township, Erie County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Caroline C. Vedder, age 39 (b. MA; parents b. MA); half-brother, Charles M. Vedder, age 23 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS); adopted daughter, L. Viola Vedder, age 12 (b. NYS; parents b. England); servant, Minnie Gallan, age 19 (b. Prussia; parents b. Prussia) and employed doing house work; and John Stein, age 12 (b. Ireland; parents b. Ireland) and employed as a chore boy.

 

1900 US Census: Of related interest, George Vedder, age 66 (b. Nov 1834 in NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as a dock tender, was heading a household at 224 Fletcher Street in Tonawanda Township, Erie County, New York.  The household also included his wife of 38 years, Carrie C. Vedder, age 59 (b. Jun 1841 in MA; parents b. MA), who had had 3 children, none still alive.

 

Viola (?) (perhaps Vedder) married (1st) (?) and had the following son:

 

a. Arthur C. (?) Bishop: Formally adopted by his stepfather, William Bishop.

 

Viola (?) (perhaps Vedder) (?) married (2nd) William F. Bishop.

1. Biographical notes:

 

Born 5 May 1899 in New York State.  Died 23 January 1980/81, age 81, in Tompkins County, New York; interred Forest Lawn Cemetery, Buffalo, Erie County, New York.

 

1915 NYS Census: William Bishop, age 16, resided with his parents in the City of Buffalo, Erie County, New York. (pg 42)

 

1920 US Census: (perhaps) William H. Woods, age 58 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as an electrical engineer, was heading a household in the City of Buffalo, Erie County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Jennie Woods, age 53 (b. NYS; father b. NYS; mother b. Canada); daughter, Ruth A. Woods, age 24 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and single, with no occupation recorded; and nephew, William J. Bishop, age 20 (b. NYS), single, and employed as a claims agent for a mutual insurance company.

 

1925 NYS Census: William J. Bishop, 26 (b. US) and employed as, was heading a household in the City of Buffalo, Erie County, New York. (pg 22)

 

1930 US Census: William J. Bishop, age 30 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as proprietor of a meat market, was heading a household at 157 Tacoma Street in the City of Buffalo, Erie County, New York.  He was married 1st at age 23.  The household also included his wife, Marion Bishop, age 28 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), who was married 1st at age 21; and son, William J. Bishop, Jr., age 2 (b. NYS).

 

1940 US Census: William J. Bishop, age 40 (b. NYS) and employed as manager of the meat department for a privately owned retail grocery, was heading a household at 18 Pierce Street in Hamburg Township, Erie County, New York.  He had completed 2 years of high school and in April 1935 resided in the City of Buffalo.  The household also included his wife, Marion Bishop, age 38 (b. NYS), who had completed 1 year of high school; and son, William J. Bishop, Jr., age 12 (b. NYS).

1930 US Census: Everett Nobles, age 36 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as a mail carrier, was heading a household in Ludlowville, Lansing Township, Tompkins County, New York.  His residence was valued at $2,500 and he was married 1st at age 22.  The household also included his wife, Winona Nobles, age 36 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), who was married 1st at age 22; daughter, Virginia Nobles, age 12 (b. NYS); son, Lloyd Nobles, age 11 (b. NYS); and daughter, Jean Nobles, age 2 (b. NYS).

 

1940 US Census: Everett Nobles, age 46 (b. NYS) and employed as a rural letter carrier, was heading a household in Lansing Township, Tompkins County, New York.  He had completed 1 year of high school and resided in the same house in April 1935.  The household also included his wife, Winona Nobles, age 46 (b. NYS), who had completed 4 years of high school; daughter, Virginia Nobles, age 22 (b. NYS) and single, who had completed 2 years of college; son, Lloyd Nobles, age 21 (b. NYS) and single, who had completed 1 year of college; and daughter, Jean Nobles, age 12 (b. NYS).
