Origin of the surname “Burt:”

 

The relatively ancient surname “Burt” is a derivative of the Anglo-Saxon word “beort,” which means illustrious.  In the old Saxon chronicles beort is synonymous with “alderman.”  It found its way into many Saxon names, eg. Albert, Egbert, Ethelbert, etc.  English forms: Burt, Byrt, and Bert.  German forms: Bert, Bertti.  French forms: Burt, Bert, Berteau, Berty.  Use in England dates to at least 1199 AD.

1. Biographical notes:

 

Born at Harberton, Devonshire, England (about 20 miles from Plymouth).  Died 30 April 1662 at Springfield, Massachusetts.  Emigrated to America in 1635.  Resided at Springfield, Massachusetts.

 

2. Wife: Eulalia Marche

 

Born 28 December 1619 at Deanprior, Devonshire, England (near Harberton), daughter of Richard and Joan (?) Marche, a Huguenot family.  Died 19 August 1690 at Springfield, Massachusetts.  While in England was reportedly thought to have died, but came back to life at her funeral.  Married Henry Burt on 28 December 1619 at Deanprior, England and had a total of 19 children.

a. Sarah Burt: Married (1st) Juda Gregory on 20 June 1643.  Married (2nd) Henry Wakely.

 

b. Abigail Burt: Died 5 February 1692.  Married (1st) Francis Ball on 3 October 1643.  Married (2nd) (?).  Married (3rd) Thomas Stebbins.

 

c. Jonathan Burt: Died 19 October 1715.  Married Elizabeth Lobdel on 20 October 1651.

 

d. Elizabeth Burt: Born 1630.  Died 17 February 1691.  Married (1st) Samuel Wright on 24 November 1653.  Married (2nd) Nathaniel Dickinson.

f. Mary Burt: Born 1634.  Died 30 August 1689.  Married William Brooks on 8 October 1654.

1. Biographical notes:

 

Born 5 February 1707.  Died 1796, within one hour of the death of his wife; interred in the same grave with her.  Raised at Ridgefield, Connecticut.  Moved to Warwick about 1746 (age 39) and remained there the remainder of his life.

Died 1796, within one hour of the death of her husband.

Born 7 March 1750 at Warwick, Orange County, New York.  Died 10 May 1826.  Moved to near Elmira, Chemung County, New York.

 

2. Wife: Johanna Parshall

 

Born 16 February 1755 near the mouth of the Loyalsock Creek (Williamsport area), Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, daughter of Israel Parshall.  Died 20 March 1850.  Married Benjamin Burt, III on 16 February 1775.

4   Israel Parshall Burt

 

1. Biographical notes:

 

Born 19 March 1801 near Wellsburg, Chemung County, New York.  Died 27 December 1904, age 103; interred East Waverly Cemetery, East Waverly, New York.  Named for his maternal grandfather, Israel Parshall.  Resided with his parents until his father died.  Then resided at Ridgebury, Pennsylvania until Polly died, when he moved to Smithfield and became a stage coach driver between Smithfield and Wellsburg.

 

2. Wife: Polly Hammond

 

Born 9 June/24 July 1804, daughter of Isaac and Mary (?) Hammond, at North Chemung County, New York.  Died 3 October 1865 (age 61 yrs, 2 mo., 25 days) at Ridgebury, Pennsylvania.  Married Israel Parshall Burt on 16 December 1824.

1. Biographical notes:

 

Born 17 March 1828 at Elmira, New York.  Named for Mijaman Griswold, son of Gideon Griswold, the 1st settler in Chemung, New York and the nearest neighbor to Mijaman’s father, Israel P. Burt.  Took his own life in May 1884 at Burtville, Pennsylvania.

Born 28 May 1842 at Port Allegany, Pennsylvania.  Died 16 July 1877 at Burtville, Pennsylvania.  Married Mijaman Griswold Burt in 1859.
