1. Biographical notes:

 

Born about 1810 in Ireland.  About 1837 moved to Verona Township, Oneida County, New York.

 

1850 US Census: (hard to read) William Burns, age 42 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Verona Township, Oneida County, New York.  The household also included (Lucy M.?) Burns, age 28 (b. NYS); Deette Burns, age 10 (b. NYS); Ellen Burns, age 8 (b. NYS); and Herbert Burns, age 4 (b. NYS).

 

1855 NYS Census: William Byrns, age 46 (birth location not recorded) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Verona Township, Oneida County, New York.  He had resided in Verona Township for 18 years.  The household also included his daughter, Deett Byrns, age 15 (b. NYS); daughter, Ellen Byrns, age 13 (b. NYS); son, Herbert Byrns, age 9 (b. NYS); Angeline Macy, age 37; and laborer, Jeremiah Dunoven, age 20.

 

1860 US Census: William Burns, age 50 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Verona Township, Oneida County, New York.  His real estate was valued as $4,000, and his personal property was valued at $1,000.  The household also included [his daughter,] Ellen Burns, age 17 (b. NYS); [son,] Herbert Burns, age 14 (b. NYS); and farm laborer, Patrick Connor, age 20 (b. NYS).

 

1865 NYS Census: Wm Byrnes, age 57 (b. Ireland) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Verona Township, Oneida County, New York.  He had been married 3 times.  The household also included his wife, Catharine Byrnes, age 43 (b. Oneida Co., NY), who had been married twice; daughter, Deett Byrnes, age 25 (b. Oneida Co., NY), single, and employed as a teacher; daughter, Ellen Byrnes, age 22 (b. Oneida Co., NY), single, and employed as a teacher; and son, Herbert W. Byrnes, age 19 (b. Oneida Co., NY), single, and employed as a farmer.

 

1870 US Census: William Byrns, age 60 (b. Ireland) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Verona Township, Oneida County, New York.  His real estate was valued at $7,000, and his personal property was valued at $1,845.  The household also included his wife, Catharine Byrns, age 47 (b. NYS); daughter, De Ette Byrns, age 29 (b. NYS) and employed as a school teacher; daughter, Ellen Byrns, age 27 (b. NYS) and employed as a school teacher; son, Herbert Byrns, age 24 (b. NYS) and employed as a farm laborer; and Anna Currie, age 5 (b. NYS).

Ireland; mother b. NYS), single, and employed as a school teacher; daughter, Ellen Byrns, age 34 (b. NYS; father b. Ireland; mother b. NYS) and single; son, Herburt Byrns, age 32 (b. NYS; father b. Ireland; mother b. NYS), single, and employed as a farmer; farm laborer, Robert Boyer, age 25 (b. NYS;  parents b. NYS) and single; farm laborer, Wm Harrison, age 19 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and single; and boarder, Annie Currie, age 15 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and in school.

Born November 1847 in New York.  Died 1936; interred Glenwood Cemetery, Oneida, Madison County, New York. 

 

1900 US Census: Herbert Byrns, age 52 (b. Nov 1847 in NYS; father b. Ireland; mother b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Verona Township, Oneida County, New York.  The household also included his wife of 16 years, Ella Byrns, age 40 (b. Feb 1860 in NYS; parents b. NYS), who had had 4 children, all still alive; son, William Byrns, age 14 (b. Jul 1885 in NYS) and employed as a farm laborer; daughter, Eemly Byrns, age 12 (b. Aug 1887 in NYS); son, George Byrns, age 9 (b. Dec 1890 in NYS); daughter, Grace Byrns, age 3 (b. Nov 1896 in NYS); sister, Deette Byrns, age 58 (b. May 1842 in NYS; father b. Ireland; mother b. NYS), single, and employed as a school teacher; sister, Ellen Byrns, age 56 (b. Aug 1843 in NYS; father b. Ireland; mother b. NYS; parents b. NYS), who  had had 5 children, all still alive; son, William H. Burns, age 24 (b. NYS), single, and employed as a farm laborer; daughter, Emily E. Burns, age 20 (b. NYS) and single; son, George H. Burns, age 18 (b. NYS), single, and employed as a farm laborer; daughter, Grace D. Burns, age 13 (b. NYS); son, Herbert Burns, age 6 (b. NYS); sister, De Ette Burns, age 60 (b. NYS) and single; sister, Ellen Burns, age 57 (b. NYS) and single.

 

1920 US Census: Herbert Byrns, age 70 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household on Verona Road in Verona Township, Oneida County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Ella M. Byrns, age 56 (b. NYS); daughter, Emily Byrns, age 31 (b. NYS), single, and employed as bookkeeper for a hardware office; son, George Byrns, age 29 (b. NYS), single, and employed as a farmer; daughter, Grace Byrns, age 23 (b. NYS), single, and employed as bookkeeper for a hardware office; son, Herbert Byrns, age 16 (b. NYS), single, and employed as a farmer; and sister, Ellen Byrns, age 75 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and single.  Of interest, the household headed by William Byrns, age 35, was enumerated close by.

Born about 1862 in New York.  Died age 100 at Phoenix, Arizona.  Married Herbert William Byrns about 1884.

William "Bill" Herbert Byrns: (more info) Born 27 July 1885 in Oneida County, New York.  Died age 95.  At some point was employed by the railroad.  In 1940 (age 53) was employed as a farmer.  Was blind in his old age and resided in a small cabin in a corner of the Byrns family farm.  Married, as her 2nd  husband, widow Mary (Williams) Kenyon (b. abt 1882/83 at South Bay, NYS) of Sylvan Beach, Oneida County, New York, daughter of Gilbert and Jessie (Reymore) Williams, on 12 December 1913 in Oneida County, New York and had the following son:

 

(1. Charles F. Byrns: Born about 1904 in New York.

 

b. Emily E. Byrns: Born August 1887 in New York.  Died, age 103.  Never married.  In his old age, resided with her brother, Bill.

 

c. George H. Byrns: Born December 1890 in New York.  Died, age 83.

 

d. Grace D. Byrns: Born November 1896 in New York.

1. Biographical notes:

 

Born 30 June 1903/05 at Durhamville, Oneida County, New York.  Died 15 May 2000, age 96; took his own life with a favorite shotgun; had cancer of the facial area; interred Glenwood Cemetery, Oneida, Madison County, New York.  Served in Company F of the 23rd NY Infantry Regiment (National Guard).  Employed as a farmer and house/barn painting contractor near Durhamville, Oneida County, New York.  Also was employed as a hunting guide.  Retired and moved off the farm in September 1998, the first time that property had not been worked by a member of the Byrns family for about 230 years.

 

1915 NYS Census: Herbert Byrne, age 6, resided with his parents in Verona Township, Oneida County, New York.

 

1925 NYS Census: Herbert Byrns, age 21, resided with his parents in Verona Township, Oneida County, New York.

 

1930 US Census: Herbert E. Byrns, age 26 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as a house painter, was heading a household in the City of Oneida, Madison County, New York.  He was married 1st at age 25.  The household also included his wife, Helena Byrns, age 22 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), who was married 1st at age 21.

 

1940 US Census: Herbert Burns, age 36 (b. NYS) and employed as a painter of houses and barns, was heading a household at 78 Cider Road in Verona Township, Oneida County, New York.  He had completed 8th grade.  The household also included his wife, Paulina Burns, age 32 (b. NYS), who had completed 8th grade; son, Edson Burns, age 10 (b. NYS); daughter, Irene Burns, age 7 (b. NYS); brother, George Burns, age 48 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, who had completed 8th grade; sister, Emily Burns, age 49 (b. NYS), who had completed 4 years of high school and was employed as a stenographer for a silverware manufacturer; and mother, Ella Burns, age 78 (b. NYS) and widowed.  Of interest, the household headed by William Burns, age 53 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer was enumerated next door.

 

2. Wife: Helena Frances Loveless

 

Born 30 August 1907 at Delancy/Colchester, Delaware County, New York; daughter of George and Jane (Hinkley) Loveless of Walton, Delaware County, New York.  Died 17 January 2008, age 100, at Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona.  Before marriage resided at Walton, Delaware County, New York.  Married Herbert Edwin Byrns on 8 October 1928 at Oneida, Madison County, New York.

 

3. Children:

 

a. Edson Herbert Byrns: Born about 1930 at Durhamville, Oneida County, New York.  Died 29 December 2006.  Worked 37 years for the Carrier Corporation, Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York; assembled the air conditioning units for the Boeing 747 at home during a strike at the plant.  Built his own airplane, but crashed it.

 

1930 US Census: Edson H. Byrns, age 0 months (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), resided in the household headed by William P. Kervin, age 35 (b. PA; parents b. PA) and employed as a shipping clerk for a casket factory, in the City of Oneida, Madison County, New York.

 

1940 US Census: Edson Byrns, age 10, resided with his parents at 78 Cider Road in Verona Township, Oneida County, New York

 

Perhaps Edson Byrns married Patricia Scobey.

 

b. Irene Helena Byrns: See generation 2, below.

 

c. Joan Emily Byrns: Born about 1942.  Died about Wednesday, 2 November 1960, age 18, from complications of hepatitis.  Received inept treatment from the country doctor near where her parents lived in upstate New York; hoping for better, in May 1960 David George Briant arranged for her to see a specialist in New York City, but by that time the disease had progressed too far to be reversed.
