1. Biographical notes:
Born about 1870 Ireland. Died between
1906 and 1910 at Lackawanna, Erie County, New York; interred Holy Cross
Cemetery, Buffalo, Erie County. Immigrated to the United State about 1892. Initially resided in
Manhattan Borough, New York County, New York. Subsequently resided at
Lackawanna.
1892 NYS Census: Of interest, there was a Bernard
Degnan, age 24 (b. Ireland) and employed as a driver, residing in Ward 12 of
Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. The
household was apparently headed by Patrick Degnan, age 32 (b. Ireland) and
employed as a conductor, and included Catherine Degnan, age 24 (b. USA), and
their son, Patrick Degnan, age 4 months (b. USA).
1900 US Census: Bernard Degnan, age 31 (b. Apr 1869
in Ireland; parents b. Ireland) and employed as a hod
(sp) carrier, was heading a household on East 94th Street in Manhattan Borough,
New York City, New York. He had
immigrated to the US in 1891, was a naturalized citizen, and had been married 3
years. The household also included his
wife, Bridget Degnan, age 34 (b. Jan 1866 in Ireland; parents b. Ireland), who
had been married 3 years, had had 2 children, both still alive, and who
immigrated to the US in 1888; Bernard's "son," Rose Degnan, age 2 (b.
Jul 1898 in NYS); son, Andrew Degnan, age 0 (b. Apr 1900 in NYS); and
brother-in-law, Laughlin Donohue, age 26 (b. Nov 1874 in Ireland).
1905 NYS Census: Bernard Degnan, age 35 (b. Ireland)
and employed as a plaster laborer, was heading a household on 1st Avenue in
Manhattan Borough, New York County, New York.
He had immigrated to the United States 13 years before. The household also included his wife, Bridget
Degnan, age 34 (b. Ireland), she had immigrated to the US 17 years before;
daughter, Rose Degnan, age 7 (b. USA); daughter, Alice Degnan, age 3 (b. USA);
and daughter, Katie Degnan, age 11 months (b. USA).

City, NY) from Ireland about 1888 (age 17) perhaps aboard the
"Celtic" of "Gallia."
1910 US Census: Bridget Degman, age 39 (b. Ireland,
as were her parents) and widowed, was heading a household in Ward 25, Buffalo,
Erie County, New York. The household
also included her son, Thomas Degman, age 17 (b. NY, parents b. Ireland); son,
William Degman, age 14 (b. NY); daughter, Rose Degman, age 9 (b. NY); daughter,
Alice Degman, age 5 (b. NY); son, Earnest Degman, age 3 (b. NY); and roomer,
Jennie Hamilton, age 60 (b. Scotland).
1915 NYS Census: Russell Duffin, age 45, was heading
a household in Ward 1, Lockport, Niagara County, New
York. The household also included his
wife, Bridget Duffin, age 45; step-son, William D. Degnan, age 20;
step-daughter, Rose Anna Degnan, age 15; daughter, Alice Degnan, age 11; and
son, Ernest Degnan, age 9.
1920 US Census: Russel Duffin, age 49 (b. Canada), was heading a household in Ward
1, Lockport, Niagara County, New York.
The household also included his wife, Bridget Duffin, age 49 (b. NY,
parents b. Ireland); his daughter, Alice Duffin, age 14 (b. NY); step-daughter,
Rosa Dynan, age 19 (b. NY); and son, Ernest Duffin,
age 12 (b. NY).
1925 NYS Census: Bridget Duffin, age 55
(nationality: USA), resided in Ward 22 of Buffalo, Erie County, New York (pg
4). She was the wife of Russell Duffin,
age 54 (nationality: Canada), who had resided in the US for 35 years. The household also included Russell's
daughter, Alice Duffin, age 20, and Russell's son, Ernest Duffin, age 18.
1930 US Census: Russel H.
Duffin, age 59 (b. Canada, father b. Ireland, mother b. Canada) was heading a
household in Buffalo, Erie County, New York.
He had immigrated to the United States in 1886. The household also included his wife, Bridget
Duffin, age 59 (b. Ireland); and daughter, Alice Duffin, age 25 (b. NY) and
single.
1940 US Census: Russell Duffin, age 70 (b. NY) and widowed,
was a lodger in the household headed by Philip Dollard, age 56 (b. NY) in Ward
27, Buffalo, Erie County, New York. That
household also included his wife, Lena Dollard, age 52 (b. NY); and son,
Charles Dollard, age 18 (b. NY).
Bridget Regan married (1st) Bernard Degnan about
1897. Following Bernard's death, Bridget
married (2nd) Russell H. Duffin between 1910 and 1915.

York State. Married (1st) (?) Dynan before
1920. Married
(2nd) (perhaps) W. Haggerty.
(2. Andrew Degnan: Born April 1900 in New York
State. Perhaps died
young.
(3. Alice (Degnan) Duffin: Born about 1902 in New
York State. Apparently
adopted by her step-father, Russell Duffin. Married (perhaps) Thomas Mulvey.
(4. Katie Degnan: Born 1904. Perhaps died young.
(5. Earnest H. (Degnan) Duffin: Born about 1907/08
in New York State. Apparently
adopted by his step-father, Russell Duffin.
(6. Mary Degnan: Born about 1910 at Lockport, New
York. Died (age 95) in May 2005 after a
lengthy illness at St. Joseph of the Pines Health Center, Pines, North
Carolina. Graduated
from Niagara Falls High School and Albany Teachers College. Employed as a teacher at
the Nevada Avenue School in the Niagara-Wheatfield School District of Buffalo,
New York. Member
of the St. Charles Borromeo Church in Olcott, New York.
Married Joseph Condren (d. 1991) and had the
following daughter:
(a. Joanne Condren: Married (?) Flower and resided at Pittsboro, North
Carolina. Joanne and her husband had two
children.

1930 US Census: Thomas Degnan, age 35 (b. NY) was
heading a household in Buffalo (Lackawanna), Erie County, New York. The household also included his wife, Ella
Degnan, age 31 (b. NY); daughter, Mary Degnan, age 12 (b. NY); daughter, Alice
Degnan, age 10 (b. NY); daughter, Ella Degnan, age 8 (b. NY); son, Thomas
Degnan, age 6 (b. NY); son, Charles Degnan, age 4 (b. NY); and son, John
Degnan, age 1 (b. NY).
1940 US Census: A household in Ward 10, Binghamton,
Broome County, New York contained daughter, Alice Degnan, age 20; daughter,
Ella Degnan, age 18; son, Thomas Degnan, age 16; son, John Degnan, age 11; son,
Patrick H. Degnan, age 9; lodger, Fred Smith, age 48; Fred Smith, age 12; and
Floyd L. Smith, age 3.

Born 22 August 1898/9. Died 23 December 1970 at
Binghamton, Broome County, New York.
At the time of the 1900 US Census Ella was residing with her parents in
the 5th Ward of Binghamton, New York. Married Thomas Degnan on 14
June 1916 at Buffalo, New York.
Following Thomas' death, Ella returned to Binghamton, New York with her
4 youngest children, where she took in boarders.
