1.  Biographical notes:

 

Born near Paris, France.  Died 1691; his will dated 13 October 1685 stated his residence was New York.  Nicholas and a Francois DePui were Huguenot Protestants during the period of religious wars in France, who had to flee Paris in 1651 to avoid religious persecution, settling at Artois, a province in the department of Calais, France.  Francois DePui emigrated to America by 1661.  About a year later Nicholas traveled to Holland and emigrated from there to America in October 1662 aboard the sailing ship, Pumerland/Pemberton Church, settling initially at New Amsterdam (later New York City) with his wife and 3 children: Nicholas, Ephraim, and Abraham.  In 1663 he received a patent from the Dutch government for a plantation on Staten Island.  Per Katie Depue, “the homestead of Nicholas Depuy is thought to have been on the south side of the Rondout [a creek?] at the place now occupied by the widow of Joachim Schoomaker.  In 1667 Nicholas swore allegiance to Great Britain.

Born 1660/1657 in France.  Died .  Was one of the first trustees of the Rochester (near Kingston), New York patent, along with Joachim Schoonmaker, under a grant from Queen Ann in 1703.

5   Nicholas Depue

 

1.  Biographical notes:

 

Born at Esopus (later Kingstown (Kingston)), Ulster County, New York.  Baptized at Rochester, New York on 3/5 December 1682.  Died 15 June 1766 on a visit to his old home in Rochester.  Moved from Rochester to Keyerrick in Ulster County, New Jersey.  In 1724/25 moved to the Minisink area (the Neversink west of the Shawangunk Mountains, and the Delaware Valley to the watergap) of Pennsylvania with his family and sister, Suzanna and her husband, Abram Van Campen, and in the period 1725 to 1727 purchased from William Penn a large area of real estate where the town of Shawnee, Pennsylvania was established, on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware River, including two large islands in the River (Shawans and Manwalamink).  Nicholas was a prominent citizen in that part of Pennsylvania.

 

The first settlements of record were about 1690 at what was later called the Upper neighborhood, near Cuddebackville.  A few years later the settlement stretched down the Neversink Valley to the river junction.  Later the Valley between Huguenot and Port Jervis was called the lower neighborhood.  The Neversink River was then called Machackemeck.  The valley between Cuddebackville and Port Jervis was often called “Peenpack.”

 

Nicholas’s will, dated 9 June 1745, lists his wife, Wyntye, and the following children: Moses, Aaron, Samuel, Daniel, Catharina, Susannah, Magdalena, Johanna, and Elizabeth.

Born 13 December 1716/19 at Rochester.  Baptized 23 December 1716, witnessed by Cornelis and Christina Wynkoop.  Died 15 June 1766 in Smithfield Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania.  In 1724 moved to the Minisink area of Pennsylvania with his parents and brothers Moses and Daniel.  Inherited and resided on the Shawnee area family homestead in Smithfield Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, which later was known as Depue’s Fort.

 

From the Journal of Captain Van Etten: “Samuel Depue’s place was a fine plantation used as a safety place and fort for settlers during Indian troubles.”

Note: It would appear the suspected relationship between generations 2, below, and 3, above, is based heavily on the middle name (Van Campen) of James, generation 1, below, which is documented in Smithfield Township church records.  So, assuming Eleanor VanCampen was the wife of Nicholas Depue, generation 3, above, it would be likely James Van Campen Depew would be her son.

Born 28 May 1771.  Died 2 November 1831.  Was on a list of church members, along with his wife Lisabeth, dated 11 October 1750 of the Machackemeck and Hennsinck Dutch Reformed Churches under the ministrations of Reverends J. C. Fryenmuth and Thomas Rmien.  May have resided in Monroe County, Pennsylvania.  Purchased from Thomas Romeyn real estate described in a deed signed by Lord Sterling on 28 June 1765 and recorded in the public records of properties of East Derusia of New Jersey at Perth Amboy (book S.5 page 256).

(7. Daniel Depew: Married Christina Myers and resided in Smithfield Township, Pennsylvania.

 

(8. Abram Depew: Married Annie Bush and resided in Cherry Valley Township, Monroe County, Pennsylvania.  Abram and Annie had 10 children.

 

(9. John Depew: Born 1804.  Died 1884.  Resided in Smithfield Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.  Married Margaret Staples (d. 1833) and had 12 children, including:

 

(a. William Depew: Born 1837 in Smithfield Township, Monroe County, Pennsylvania.  Employed as a mail carrier in the Delaware Water Gap.

 

b. Abram Depew: First settler north of Pennsylvania’s Blue Ridge.  Served in the War of 1812.

 

2. Samuel Depew: Born 15 February 1789.  Died 25 May 1845.  Married Jemima Rigater (b. 20 Oct 1802, d. 12 Sep 1847) and resided in Sussex County, New Jersey.  Samuel and Jemima had the following children:

 

a. Elizabeth Depew: Married Jackson Dennis.

 

b. Keron Depew: Married David Shay of Jessup Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.

 

c. Samuel R. Depew: Born 11 September 1836 in Sussex County, New Jersey.  Died 3 March 1874; interred Fairdale Cemetery.  Moved to Franklin Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania about 1856.  Married Phoebe Gunn on 2 October 1858 in Jessup Township and had the following children:

 

(1. Ada Depew: Died young.

 

(2. Melruna Depew: Died young.

 

(3. Priscilla Depew: Married Calvin Peck of Franklin Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsyhlvania.

 

(4. Minerva Depew: Married Charles Palmer.

 

(5. Ogden Depew: Resided in Franklin Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.  Married Hattie Peirson and had one daughter, who died young.

 

d. Jane Depew: Married Robert Pettitt of Scranton, Pennsylvania.

 

3. John Depew: Had the following son:

 

a. John Depew, Jr.: Married Mary Van Gorden and had the following children:

 

(1. Nicholas Depew: Born 13 April 1800.  Baptized 23 August 1807.

 

(2. Aaron Depew: Born 8 August 1802.

 

(3. Moses Depew: Born 1 September 1804.

 

(4. Elizabeth Depew: Born 28 November 1806.

 

(5. Daniel Depew: Born 27 October 1809.  Baptized 3 June 1810.

 

(6. Sarah Depew: Born 18 June 1814.  Baptized 7 August 1814.

 

(7. Mary Depew: Born 11 August 1816.  Baptized 10 November 1816.

 

(8. Caty Anne Depew: Born 6 October 1821.  Baptized 9 December 1821. 

 

4. Charles Depew: Married (?) and had the following daughter:

 

a. Mildred Depew: Married (?) Robbins and resided on RR #1, Waverly, New York.  Mildred and her husband had the following children: (order uncertain)

 

(1. Arthur Depew: Born May 1927.

 

(2. Louise Depew: Born August (?).

 

(3. Franklin Depew: Born 15 April (?).

 

(4. Louis Depew.

 

(5. Shirley Depew: Born 31 December (?).

 

(6. William “Billy” Depew.

 

(7. Ida May Depew: Born 8 November 1937.

 

(8. Charlotte Depew: Born about 1941/42.

 

(9. Norman Depew: Born about 1946.
