1. Biographical notes:
Born near Paris, France. Died 1691; his will dated 13 October 1685
stated his residence was New York.
Nicholas and a Francois DePui were Huguenot Protestants during the
period of religious wars in France, who had to flee Paris in 1651 to avoid
religious persecution, settling at Artois, a province in the department of
Calais, France. Francois DePui emigrated
to America by 1661. About a year later
Nicholas traveled to Holland and emigrated from there to America in October
1662 aboard the sailing ship, Pumerland/Pemberton Church, settling initially at
New Amsterdam (later New York City) with his wife and 3 children: Nicholas,
Ephraim, and Abraham. In 1663 he
received a patent from the Dutch government for a plantation on Staten Island. Per Katie Depue, “the homestead of Nicholas
Depuy is thought to have been on the south side of the Rondout [a creek?] at
the place now occupied by the widow of Joachim Schoomaker. In 1667 Nicholas swore allegiance to Great
Britain.

5 Nicholas Depue
1. Biographical notes:
Born at Esopus (later Kingstown (Kingston)), Ulster
County, New York. Baptized at Rochester,
New York on 3/5 December 1682. Died 15
June 1766 on a visit to his old home in Rochester. Moved from Rochester to Keyerrick in Ulster
County, New Jersey. In 1724/25 moved to
the Minisink area (the Neversink west of the Shawangunk Mountains, and the
Delaware Valley to the watergap) of Pennsylvania with his family and sister,
Suzanna and her husband, Abram Van Campen, and in the period 1725 to 1727
purchased from William Penn a large area of real estate where the town of Shawnee,
Pennsylvania was established, on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware River,
including two large islands in the River (Shawans and Manwalamink). Nicholas was a prominent citizen in that part
of Pennsylvania.
The first settlements of record were about 1690 at
what was later called the Upper neighborhood, near Cuddebackville. A few years later the settlement stretched
down the Neversink Valley to the river junction. Later the Valley between Huguenot and Port
Jervis was called the lower neighborhood.
The Neversink River was then called Machackemeck. The valley between Cuddebackville and Port
Jervis was often called “Peenpack.”
Nicholas’s will, dated 9 June 1745, lists his wife,
Wyntye, and the following children: Moses, Aaron, Samuel, Daniel, Catharina,
Susannah, Magdalena, Johanna, and Elizabeth.

Note: It would appear the suspected

So, assuming Eleanor VanCampen was the wife of Nicholas Depue,
generation 3, above, it would be likely James Van Campen Depew would be her
son.

of Reverends J. C. Fryenmuth and Thomas Rmien.
May have resided in Monroe County, Pennsylvania. Purchased from Thomas Romeyn real estate
described in a deed signed by Lord Sterling on 28 June 1765 and recorded in the
public records of properties of East Derusia of New Jersey at Perth Amboy (book
S.5 page 256).
