Drake Generation 8
in America
Gay
#599 *
1. Parents: Captain
Josiah III (7) and Mary (Chapin) Drake of Rutland Township,
Jefferson County, New York.
2. Birth: 17 October 1784 in Massachusetts.
3. Death: 9 June 1852, age 67, in
Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York.
Interred in lot C-43/44 of the Felts Mills Cemetery on Route 3 in Rutland
Township (point of contact: Felts Mills Cemetery Association, PO Box 46, Felts
Mills, Jefferson Co., NY). By July 1993
Ziba’s grave marker (white marble of classic thin design) was broken off at the
base and imbedded face up at ground level behind the base. The inscription read, in part: “Died June 9
1852, AE 67 y’rs.”
Will recorded in Jefferson
County, New York Surrogate Court records (Volume 2, page 132) maintained at 163
Arsenal Street (3rd Floor), Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.
4. Biographical Notes:
About
1808 moved his young family from Buckland, Franklin County, Massachusetts to
Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York. (historical
perspective) Employed there as a
carpenter.
Of
interest, Gay * indicates both Ziba
and Silence were interred on the
Clark Farm, Rutland Hollow, which is some distance from the Felts Mills
Cemetery. There were six Clark
households in Rutland Township in 1850.
5. Census Records:
1790 US Census: Ziba
Drake was under 16 years old and resided with his parents in Buckland Township,
Franklin County, Massachusetts.
1800 US Census: No
record found for Ziba Drake as head of a household. Would have been about 16
years old, single, and (probably) a resident of Buckland Township, Franklin
County, Massachusetts. Perhaps employed by a neighbor as a farm hand, since he was not
listed with his father.
1810 US Census: No
record found for Ziba Drake as head of a household anywhere in the US. He would have been about 26 years old,
married, and probably a resident of either Rutland Township, Jefferson County,
New York or Buckland Township, Franklin County, Massachusetts. His wife would have been about 23 years old,
and his one child, Almond, would have been about 3 years old. He was not part of his father's household in
Ashfield Township, Massachusetts.
Note: There was a "Lewis Drake" (quite legibly written
on pg 542) heading a household in Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New
York. That household included 1 male age
16 to 26; 1 female age 16 to 26; and 1 male under age 10, which mirrors exactly
what Ziba's household would have looked like.
Of interest, Lewis' next door neighbor was Spencer Woodard, age 26 to 45
and his family, perhaps a relative of Ziba's wife, Silence (Woodward) Drake. (note: Woodward and Woodard are frequently interchanged in US
Census records). "Lewis" could
be "Ziba;" no prior or subsequent record of a Lewis Drake found.
1820 US Census: Ziba Drake, age 26 to 45, resided in
Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York with two males (Josiah and Austin)
and one female (Maria) under 10 years of age, one male (Almond) between 10 and 16, and one female (Silence) between 26 and 45 years of age. Ziba had one free, colored hired hand
residing with him.
Of minor interest, another Ziba Drake was heading a household in
Sharon Township, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.
That household included 2 males under age 10; 1 male age 16 to 18; 2
males age 16 to 26; 1 male age 45 or more; 1 female age 16 to 26; and 2 females
age 45 or more.
1830 US Census: Ziba Drake, age 40 to 50, resided in
Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York with one male (Austin) and one
female (Maria) 10 to 15 years old, one male (Josiah) 15 to 20 years old, one
male (Almond) 20 to 30 years
old, and one female (Silence) 40
to 50 years old.
1840 US Census: Ziba Drake, age 50 to 60, was heading a household in Rutland Township,
Jefferson County, New York with one male (probably son, Austin)
age 20 to 30 and one female (Silence)
age 50 to 60. One of the men was engaged
in agriculture, the other in manufacturing and trade.
1850 US Census: Ziba Drake, age 66 (b. MA) and employed as a
carpenter, was heading a household in Rutland Township, Jefferson
County, New York. His real estate was
valued at $600. The household also
included his wife, Silenc Drake, age 63 (b. MA); son,
Josiah Drake, age 38 (b. NYS) and employed as a carpenter; son, Austin Drake,
age 34 (b. NYS) and employed as a laborer; granddaughter, Hellen/Ellen
A. Drake, age 14 (b. NYS); granddaughter, Gaicia P.
Drake, age 10 (b. NYS); and granddaughter, Louisa J. Drake, age 5 (b.
NYS). Of interest, the household headed
by Ziba's son-in-law, William Roberts, age 32 (b. NYS) and employed as a
farmer, whose real estate was valued at $2,000, was enumerated next door.
6. Wife: Silence
Woodward
(photos) (more info) (1787 – 1870)
"Tilly"
Perhaps
the daughter of James and
Silence (Harvey) Woodward, this younger Silence was born about 1787 in Massachusetts (per census
records). She probably married Ziba
Drake about 1806. About 1808, one year
after their son Almond was born, Silence and Ziba moved to Rutland Township,
Jefferson County, New York. Perhaps the “Miss Drake” shown on an 1860 map
on what is now Route 3 adjacent to the residence of her son-in-law, William
Rogers, and a short distance west on the same road of her son, Josiah Drake. Interred
in lot B-131 of the Felts Mills, New York cemetery on Route 3. Silence's
son, Austin, shared her obelisk-shaped headstone when he died 15 years later.
a.
Parents: James and Silence (perhaps Harvey)* Woodward
*(if so, daughter Silence, was born when this James
and Silence had been married about 46 yrs)
Note: The only Silence Harvey
recorded as born in Massachusetts in the 1700s, per Massachusetts
Vital Records, was born to David and Silence (Cole) Harvey at Taunton, Bristol
County, Massachusetts on 9 November 1768, more than 27 years after the marriage
of James and Silence Woodward on 19 June 1741 at Taunton. It's likely that Silence Harvey (b. 1768) is
the woman who married Elisha Harvey on 3 April 1787 at Taunton. David and Silence (Cole) Harvey had the
following children in Taunton Township:
·
Silence
Harvey: Born 9 November 1768. Perhaps
married Elisha Harvey on 3 April 1787 at Taunton.
·
Amittai
Harvey: Born 12 November 1770.
·
David
Harvey: Born 21 May 1774.
·
Elizabeth
Harvey: Born 22 February 1777.
·
Stimpson
Harvey: Born 30 April 1780. Married Louritta Briggs of Norton, Massachusetts (intent recorded 9
Apr 1846).
·
Barzillai
Harvey: Born 25 November 1784.
·
Barnabas
Harvey: Born 2 October 1786. Died 24
September 1823, age 37.
·
William
Harvey: Born 28 June 1792. Died 4
February 1838, age 45 years, 7 months, 7 days.
Note: No record found of
children born to James and Silence Woodward in Massachusetts.
b. Birth: About 1787 in Massachusetts (per US Census records).
c. Death: 7 May 1870, age 83, in Rutland Township from complications of old age; interred there in plot B-131 of the Felts Mills Cemetery with an obelisk-shaped head stone.

Woodward. One was in Conway Township,
Hampshire County (same county and very close to Ashfield and Buckland
Townships, where Ziba resided).

females, one of which might have been Silence. The other James Woodward household was in

male under 10; 1 male age 10 to 16; 1 male age 16 to 26; 1 male age 45 and
above; 2 females age 10 to 16 (the younger Silence would have been about age
13); 1 female age 16 to 26 and 1 female age 45 and above (both James and his
wife, Silence would have been more than 45 years old.
There was also a household headed by a James Woodward in Franklin

male age 10 to 16; 1 female age 26 to 45; 1 female under 10; 2 females age 10
to 16; and 1 female age 26 to 45. His
