Born about 1827 in Herkimer County, New York. Died 1 August
1884 in Jefferson County, New York; interred Van Allen Cemetery. Moved from Herkimer County
to Jefferson County about 1837. Veteran of the US Civil War; served as a private in the 10th NY
Artillery from 4 August 1862 to 23 June 1865 (2 years, 10 months, 19 days).
1850 US Census: George Fikes, age 24, resided with
his presumed brother, John M. Fikes, in Pamelia Township, Jefferson County, New
York.
1855 NYS Census: Geo Fikes, age 27 (b. Herkimer Co.,
NY) and employed as a carpenter, was heading a household in LeRay Township,
Jefferson County, New York. He had
resided in Jefferson County for 15 years.
The household also included his wife, Jane Fikes, age 30 (b. Saratoga Co.,
NY), who had resided in Jeffersn County for 18 years;
son, Erzaen Fikes, age 4
(b. Jefferson Co., NY); and daughter, C. A. Fikes, age 2 (b. Jefferson Co.,
