Born 1620 in Dalbury Leis, Derby, England.  Died 18 October 1704 in Westfield Township, Hampden County, Massachusetts.  Immigrated to America, settling at Windsor, Connecticut as early as 1640, when he was at Windsor, Connecticut.  In 1671 sold his land there and shortly after moved his family to Westfield Township, Hampden County, Massachusetts.

(d. 6 Jan 1744 at Westfield, MA) and had the following children:

Green (b. 6 Oct 1806, d. 27 Sep 1882, age 66), daughter of Allen Green, on 12 April 1827 and had the following daughter:

Fowler: Ninth child.  Born August 1837 in New York State.  Died 1907; interred Dunmore Cemetery, Dunmore, Pennsylvania.  Perhaps attended Claverack College, Columbia County, New York.  Thought to have taught school for several years, including in Kerhonkson Township, Ulster County, New York, where he probably met and married Lamira Whittaker.  By 1870 was a school principal in Wayne County, Pennsylvania.  Subsequently taught school in Dunmore Borough, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, where he retired as Superintendant of Schools.

 

Note: Illinois death records indicate LeRoy Fowler, father of John W. and husband of Lamira/Lamina Whittaker, was born in Connecticut; probably ignorance on the part of John's 2nd wife, Kathryn, and/or John's children.

Born Aug 1832/33, perhaps in Brownville Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 17 May 1913 in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York, age 80.  Employed as a farmer.  Resided about 1.5 miles from LeRaysville, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.

 

1870 US Census: Ashbell Fowler, age 38 and employed as a laborer, was heading a household in Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Lovisa (age 26); daughter, Addie (age 8); daughter, Carrie (age 6); daughter, Ann (age 4); and daughter, Velina (age 2).  All were born in New York.

 

1875 NYS Census: A. Fowler, age 42 and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Lovica Fowler, age 31; daughter, Addie Fowler, age 13; daughter, Cora Fowler, age 11; daughter, Ann Fowler, age 8; daughter, Velma Fowler, age 6; and son, Oren Fowler, age 2 months.  All were born in Jefferson County, New York.

 

1880 US Census: A. Fowler, age 47 (b. NYS, father b. MA, mother b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Lovisa Fowler, age 36; daughter, Velma Fowler, age 11 (b. NYS); son, Orren Fowler, age 5 (b. NYS); son, Walice Fowler, age 3.

 

1900 US Census: Asbel Fowler, age 66 (b. Aug 1833 in NYS, father b. MA, mother b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife of 40 years, Lovica Fowler (b. Jan 1844 in NYS), who had had no children.

 

1910 US Census: Asbill Fowler, age 77, was heading a household in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Lovisa M. (age 66), with whom he had been married 49 years and had 7 children, 6 of whom were still living.  Asbill and his mother were born in New York.  His father was born in Massachusetts.  Lovisa and her parents were born in New York.

 

Of interest, Lester D. Waful, age 58, was heading a household next door to Asbill Fowler (perhaps Asbill’s younger brother).  The household also included Lester’s wife, Sarah (age 59).  Lester’s parents were born in New York.  Sarah was born in English Canada and her parents were born in Scotland.

Born 12 January 1844 in a log cabin in Herkimer County, New York, daughter of Heman and Jemima (Ross) Waful.  Died Tuesday, 8 PM in October 1940 (age 96) from complications of old age at the home of her daughter, Velma, in Brownville, Jefferson County, New York; funeral there Thursday at 2 PM; interred in the Black River Cemetery on Route 3 east of the village of Black River, Jefferson County, New York (also seen: LeRaysville Cemetery, which is also called the Sheepfold Cemetery, now on Fort Drum).  Married Ashbill Fowler on 24 April 1861 at her parents’ home near Brownville, Jefferson County, New York and resided at LeRaysville.  After his death in 1913, Lovica returned to the Waful homestead at LeRaysville, where she lived alone and which she owned until she died.  Lovica had a garden there and many raspberry bushes.  In November 1938 she moved in with her daughter, Velma and Velma’s family at Brownville, Jefferson County, New York, though she spent summers back at the Waful homestead in LeRaysville.  Lovica was the last of her 11 siblings to die.

 

Lovisa's granddaughter, Margaret Maria (Bowman) Cool remembered her as follows: "She used to come and stay a week with us in the fall, and I loved her dearly.  She was so old fashioned that she was really funny sometimes."

 

1915 NYS Census: Louisa M. Fowler, age 71, was heading a household in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.

NYS) and employed as a cheese maker, was heading a household in Wilna Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Addie E. Gibbs, age 18 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS); and sister-in-law (Addie's sister), Ann E. Fowler, age 13 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as a servant.

 

1905 NYS Census: Lewis B. Gibbs, age 48 (b. US), was heading a household in Wilna Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Addie E. Gibbs, age 43 (b. US); and daughter, Edith H. Gibbs, age 10 (b. US).

 

1910 US Census: Lewis B. Gibbs, age 53 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Wilna Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He had been married once.  The household also included his wife of 32 years, Addie Gibbs, age 48 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), who had had 2 children, both still alive; daughter, Edith Gibbs, age 15; cousin, Eugene Gibbs, age 54 (b. NYS), single, and employed working out; and servant, Clemena Lake, age 40 (b. NYS) and married for 26 years, who had had 5 children, 3 of whom were still alive and was employed by a private family.

 

1915 NYS Census: Addie E. Gibbs, age 53, resided in Wilna Township, Jefferson County, New York.

 

1920 US Census: Lewis B. Gibbs, age 62 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as a cheese maker in a cheese factory, was heading a household in Wilna Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Adelaide E. Gibbs, age 57 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS).
