Origin of the surname “Gamble:”

 

Of Scottish origin.  According to William Starret, husband of Mary Gamble (dau of Thomas Gamble, gen 5, below): "The Gambles [his father-in-law's family] were among the earliest of the Scotch family to take refuge in Ireland."  Many Scots fled their country to escape religious persecution.

Born northern Ireland.  Died .  In 1700 resided at Londonderry County (County Derry), Ireland.

a. Archibald Gamble: Born in Ireland.  Died winter 1779 at Warren, Maine; drowned when the load of hay he was hauling across the George's River broke through the ice; interred there in the old Presbyterian cemetery.  Planned to emigrate from Ireland to America with his 2 brothers and sister, Mary in 1722/28, but just before departure was impressed into military service by the British.  Subsequently escaped and made his way to Virginia.  From there he moved to Londonderry, New Hampshire, where his brother, William resided.  Moved from there to Pemaquid, Maine, and in 1736 moved to upper St. Georges (later Warren), Maine, close to where his sister, Mary (Gamble) Starrett resided.

 

In 1742/43 married Mrs. Isabella (Asbell) Galloway, who had lost her husband in 1740 during the months of deprivation that followed the wreck of their sailing ship "Grand Design" on Mt. Desert Island, Maine while in route from Ireland to Pennsylvania.  Isabella had a son from her 1st marriage, but years later, as a young man, that son was lost at sea.

 

Archibald was a member of Captain Thomas Hutchin's company of Rangers during the French and Indian War (1755).

 

Archibald and Isabella had the following children:

 

(1. Ann Hey "Nancy" Gamble: Born 1743/44 in the old fort at Thomaston, Maine.  Married John Mingerson in 1769 at Boston, Massachusetts.

 

(2. Thomas Gamble: Died while serving in the British Navy.  Had been impressed into service.

 

(3. Mary Gamble: Born 27 May 1746 at Lexington, Massachusetts.  Married David Creighton (b. 2 Jan 1736 at Warren, ME, d. 29 Aug 1811 at Thomaston, ME), son of David Creighton on 19 December 1770.

 

(4. Robert Gamble: Born about 1748.  Died 1770; lost at sea in a snow storm off Cape Ann aboard the sloop "Industry."

 

(5. Margaret Gamble: Born 12 August 1751.  Married Nathan Bucklin (b. 1741, d. 18 Sep 1829 at Warren, ME) of Warren, Maine on 4 September 1770.

 

(6. Elizabeth Gamble: Born 3 June 1754 in the old fort at Thomaston, Maine.  Married Lieutenant Joseph Coombs (b. Brunswick, ME) on 6 June 1776..

 

b. Thomas Gamble, Jr.: Born in Ireland.  Planned to emigrate from Ireland to America with his 2 brothers and sister, Mary in 1722/28, but just before departure was impressed into military service by the British.  Following that ordeal, emigrated to America and settled in Virginia and, reportedly, had children.

 

c. Mary Gamble: Born 1699/1700 in County Derby, Ireland.  Died 17 April 1786 at Warren, Maine.  Married William Starrett (b. 15 Apr 1694 in Scotland, d. 8 Mar 1769 at Dedham, MA) in 1742.  At age 2 William fled Scotland with his parents to avoid religious persecution.  He emigrated to America about 1728, settling initially at Pemaquid, Maine.  In 1735 William moved to Warren, Maine.  Following the Indian War (King George's War), Mary and William settled at Dedham, Massachusetts.  They had the following children:

 

(1. Margaret Starrett: Died at Warren, Maine.  Married (1st) Hugh Scot (d. 3 Nov 1762).  Married (2nd) Dr. Daniel Locke.  Married (3rd) Stephen Peabody on 31 May 1774.

 

(2. Hugh Starrett: Born Ireland.  Died ; lost at Sea.

 

(3. David Starrett: Born 27 December 1736 at Warren, Maine.  Died 19 March 1813 at Francestown, New Hampshire.  Moved with his father from Warrenk, Maine to Dedham, Massachusetts.  Subsequently moved to Derryfield (now Manchester) New Hampshire.  Married (1st) Mary McClintock (b. 29 Sep 1740, d. 9 Dec 1785), daughter of William and Agnes (?) McClintock, on 28 October 1760 and had 9 children.  Married (2nd) Mrs. Elizabeth (Thorndike) Langdon (b. 14 Feb 1750, d. 27 Sep 1836) on 8 February 1787 and had 4 children.

1. Biographical notes:

 

Born 1709 in Londonderry County (County Derry), Ireland.  Died 28 November/December 1785, age 76 years, 11 months, at Derryfield (now Manchester), New Hampshire from complications of "cramp colic;" will dated 24/25 November 1785 indicated he died at age 77; initially interred Stark Yard, Manchester, New Hampshire; moved to  Valley Cemetery in 1841, shortly after its incorporation.  Immigrated to America at age 14/19 in 1722/28 with his sister, Mary.  While preparing for departure, his two older brothers, who had also planned to emigrate with them, were pressed into military service by the British.  William was saved by a neighbor woman, Mrs. Michael McClintock, who hid him under her dress during the search of her house.

 

On arrival at Boston, Massachusetts, William worked 2 years on the ferry from Charleston to Boston.  Then he was employed farming for several years.  About 1733 moved to a farm at Chester, New Hampshire.  In 1745 served in Colonel Hart's Regiment during the French and Indian War, traveling to Ticonderoga, Crown Point, and was at the "Plain of Abraham" with General Wolf.  Following that he returned to farming at Derryfield, Hillsboro County, New Hampshire.

Born .  Died before 1755.  Of Londonderry, New Hampshire.  Married William Gamble at Londonderry Township, Rockingham County, New Hampshire.

McClintock and grandson of Michael McClintock (whose wife saved her father from the British press gang as he prepared to depart Ireland), on 12 February 1760 and had the following children:

 

(a. Elizabeth McClintock: Born 11 October 1761.  About 1816 moved west to reside in Ohio. 

 

(b. Mary McClintock: Born 4 April 1763.  Died 17 May 1843.  Married Thomas Stuart (b. 27 Mar 1762, d. 24 Oct 1844), son of John and Abagail (Phipps) Stuart, about 1789 and about 1818 moved to Unity, New Hampshire.  Mary and Thomas had the following children:

 

(1) Archibald Stuart: Born 30 September 1790.  In 1863 resided at Buffalo, Erie County, New York.

 

(2) William Stuart: Born 7 June 1792.  Died about 1830 at Baltimore, Maryland.

Born 20 July 1722 in Londonderry Township, Rockingham County, New Hampshire; daughter of Archibald Stark and Eleanora (Nichols) Stark, who also had son John Stark, a general officer during the American Revolutionary War.  Died 28/25 January 1805, age 82 years, 6 months, at Derryfield in the fire that destroyed her son, Archibald's residence, where she resided.  Married, as his 2nd wife, William Gamble on 22 February 1760 in Derryfield (now Manchester), Hillsborough County, New Hampshire.

Born 22 February 1767 in Brookfield Township, Worcester County, Massachusetts; daughter of Rueben and Persis (Denny) Gilbert.  Died 20 September 1844, age 77 years, 6 months, in Florence Township, Oneida County, New York; interred "Seventh Cemetery," Camden Township, Oneida County.  Of Brookfield, Massachusetts before marriage.  Married William Gamble, Jr. on 5 July 1789 in Brookfield Township.  Married (2nd) William Lamphere and in 1827 purchased land in Florence Township, Oneida County, New York.

Married Sophronia Curtis (b. 17 Apr 1815 at Camden, NY, d. Apr 1903 at home in West Camden), daughter of Ambrose Curtis (b. Litchfield Co., CT) of West Camden, on 12 January 1836 at West Camden and had the following children:

John Wesley Gamble: Eldest child.  Born 11 April 1837 at home on the family farm in Florence Township, Oneida County, New York.  Died 2 May 1870, age 33, at Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.  Was employed farming with his father until age 20, when he began a career with the railroad as an assistant to his Uncle Leverett Munson, the Station Agent at West Camden.  John succeeded Leverett in that post in 1858.  Married Mary Annis Munson (b. 16 Jan 1836 at West Camden, NY), daughter of Selden (b. 2 Jun 1799 at Windham, NY, d. 22 Jan 1872/73 at Watertown, NY) and Amanda (Barnes) Munson (m. 4 May 1825, d. 1 Dec 1869) of West Camden, on 11 January 1859 and had the following children:

Gamble, age 27 (b. Mar 1873 in IL; mother b. IL; father b. NY; m. 7 yrs; had 3 children, all still alive), daughter, Agnes Gamble, age 3 (b. Nov 1896 in IL), daughter, Mary Gamble, age 1 (b. Aug 1898 in NY), and daughter, Ethelwyne Gamble, age 6 months (b. Nov 1899 in NY).  The household also included 1 nurse, 1 servant, and 1 coachman.

NYS; mother b. IL; father b. NYS; m. age 22), daughter, Jean Atkinson, age 7 (b. NYS), son, Jack Atkinson, age 5 (b. NYS), and daughter, Grace Atkinson, age 8 months (b. NYS).  The household also included 2 servants.

Born about 1791 in Argyle Township, Washington County, New York (also seen: b. VT).  Died about 4 March 1876, age 85 years, 2 months, at Felts Mills, Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York from injuries he received in a fall.  Veteran of the War of 1812; served 14/15 days in Lieutenant James Bain's Company of the 118th Regiment of New York Militia, which mobilized at Argyle, New York and deployed north to Plattsburgh, Clinton County, New York; discharged at Burlington, Vermont "some 100 miles from his place of residence."  Resided in Argyle Township, New York before the War.  Subsequently resided in Brownville Township, Jefferson County, New York before moving to nearby Rutland Township (Felts Mills area).  Employed as a laborer.

 

1830 US Census: William Gamble was heading a household in Argyle Township, Washington County, New York.

 

1835 NYS Census: William Gamble was heading a household in Brownville Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household included 3 males (1 of voting age) and 2 females (1 married).  They resided on 3 acres of land and had 2 head of cattle, 1 horse, and 4 hogs.

 

1840 US Census: William Gamble, age 40 to 50, was heading a household in Brownville Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included 1 male age 15 to 20; 1 male age 20 to 30; 1 female, age 20 to 30; and 1 female age 40 to 50.

 

1850 US Census: William Gamble, age 59 (b. NYS) and employed as a laborer, was heading a household in Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York (value of property not given).  The household also included his wife, Catharine Gamble, age 58 (b. NYS); son, William L. Gamble, age 33 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer (value of property: $150); perhaps William L.'s wife, Catharine C. Gamble, age 21 (b. NYS); and William H. Gamble, age 6 months (b. NYS), perhaps the son of William L. and Catharine C.

 

1855 NYS Census: William Gamble, age 63 (b. VT), was heading a household in Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Catharine Gamble, age 62 (b. Dutchess Co., NY).  They both had resided in Rutland Township for 13 years.

 

1860 US Census: William (looks like "Milligan") Gamble, age 68 (b. VT) was heading a household at Black River, Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Catherine Gamble, age 67 (b. MA).

Washington Co., NY) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He had resided in Rutland Township for 13 years.  The household also included his wife, Catharine Gamble, age 26 (b. Jefferson Co., NY), who had resided in Rutland Township for 9 years; son, William H. Gamble, age 5 (b. Jefferson Co., NY); and son, John P. Gamble, age 3 (b. NYS); son, Willie H. Gamble, age 20 (b. NYS); son, John Gamble, age 18 (b. NYS); son, Charles Gamble, age 15 (b. NYS); daughter, Martha Gamble, age 12 (b. NYS); son, James Gamble, age 8 (b. NYS); and son, Frederick Gamble, age 4 (b. NYS).

 

William L. Gamble married Catherine C. Passenger (b. about 1829 in New York, d. 12 Jan 1895, age 65; interred with William), daughter of John Passenger (b. abt 1809) (John also had a son, James Passenger, who in 1880 resided at Carthage with his father, age 82), and after 1870 moved to Wilna Township, Jefferson County.  William and Catherine had the following children:

William Henry Gamble "Henry": (more info) Born about March 1850 in New York.  Died 9 November 1895, age 45 years, 8 months from the complications of typhoid fever; interred Gamble Cemetery, River Road just outside Carthage, Wilna Township, Jefferson County, New York (because, according to family memory, authorities would not allow transport of his remains through Carthage to Fairview Cemetery, where his parents were interred).  Employed as a farmer.  Married, as her 1st husband, Julia D. Pratt (photos) (b. abt 1862 in NYS) and had the following children: (order uncertain)

 

(1) Evah J. Gamble: Born about 1882.  Died 27 August 1884, age 2 years, 2 months, 26 days, perhaps from the complications of typhoid fever; interred Gamble Cemetery on River Road just outside Carthage, Wilna Township, Jefferson County, New York.

 

(2) George Rinaldo Gamble: Born 1886.  Died 2 September 1950; interred Fairview Cemetery, Carthage, Wilna Township, Jefferson County, New York.  In the late 1940s founded, with son Warren, the Gamble Machine Company on West End Avenue, Carthage, Wilna Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Married Ida Persha (b. 1894, d. 1960) and had the following son:

Following William's death, Julia (Pratt) Gamble married (2nd) George D. Fraser/Frazier and resided in a very modest home northwest of Carthage on Route 3 (the River Road).  Their home was destroyed by fire on 9 March 1933.

 

1910 US Census: George D. Frazier, age 56 (b. English-speaking Canada; parents b. English-speaking Canada) and employed as superintendant of a box factory, was heading a household on River Road in Wilna Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He immigrated to the US in 1892 and had been married twice.  The household also included his wife of 9 years, Julia D. Frazier, age 48 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), who had been married twice and had had 5 children, 4 of whom were still alive; stepson, George R. Gamble, age 24 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), single, and employed as a mechanic tender in a paper mill; stepson, Harrison L. Gamble, age 20 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), single, and employed as a mechanic tender in a paper mill; step-daughter, Carrie L. Gamble, age 14 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS); and daughter, Flossie D. Frazier, age 5 (b. NYS).

Oct 1883 in NYS; parents b. NYS), single, and employed as a laborer; and son, John Gamble, age 13 (b. Jan 1887 in NYS; parents b. NYS).

Gamble, age 51, was heading a household on West End Avenue in the Village of Carthage, Wilna Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Almeda J.
