before 5 September 1659 (when estate was inventoried) at Wethersfield, Hartford
County, Connecticut; probate 6 October 1659 at Hartford, Hartford County. Immigrated to America about 1635, settling
initially at Braintree, Massachusetts.
About 1644/45 moved with many others to Windsor, Connecticut (more
fertile and less rocky farm land), where he bought 5 acres of land from Francis
Stiles. By 1652 sold that land to John Drake, Sr.
2. Wife: Elizabeth Bennett
Born in England. Died at about the same time as Thomas; the
estate inventory for Thomas includes funeral charges for both Thomas and
Elizabeth. Not mention in any New England
record. Married Thomas Gilbert on 29
August 1610 in Yardley Parish, Worcester County, England.

Born 21 October 1752 in Ripton Parish (now
Huntington), Stratford Township, Fairfield County, Connecticut. Died 22 November 1829, age 77 years, 1 month,
and 1 day (gravestone: died age 74) at Galway, New York. Grew up at Huntington. Apprenticed in the leather industry and was
in business for himself making boots and shoes before 1776. Served in the Continental Army during the
American Revolutionary War, enlisting in June 1776 in Connecticut and for three
years thereafter engaged in the battles of Trenton, Monmouth, Bordertown,
Brunswick, and several others. Was one
of the 2,400 brave men who, along with General George Washington, crossed the ice-jammed
Delaware River to surprise the Hessians.
Following the War, returned to Connecticut, where he married and
returned to the leather trade. Following
the death of his 1st wife, John moved from Huntington, Connecticut to Galway
Township, Saratoga County, New York, where he took up farming in addition to
leather work.

As a young man was employed digging (with a shovel) the Erie Canal,
which depleted his health and made him an invalid for many years. Was a Town Constable for a period of
time. After his father died, Abijah continued to work the farm, but he fell into debt
and, because his assets included his inherited share of the farm, the Court
ordered the farm to be sold to pay creditors from Abijah's
share of his father's estate. Following
that, Abijah and his family left Galway for Wisconsin
on 22 September 1847 (also seen: spring 1847), where he was employed as a
carpenter.

1. Biographical notes:
Born 22 August 1809 in Galway Township, Saratoga
County, New York (when his father was age 56 and his mother was age 44 years, 9
months, and 21 days). Died Sunday, 3
February 1889, age 79, at Binghamton, Broome County, New York from
complications of pneumonia and bilious disorders. Grew up in Galway Township. Prepared for college at Fairfield
Academy. Graduated from Union College,
Schenectady, New York on 7 August 1837.
That fall entered Auburn Theological Seminary, graduating in 1840, all
the time working as a school teacher, cutting wood, and doing other odd jobs to
pay expenses. Was also very interested
in astronomy. Initially installed in
1841 as pastor of the Presbyterian Church, Windsor, New York and remained there
14 years (until 1854). Then 6 years
(1854-1860) as leader of the Congregational Church, Greene, Chenango County,
New York. Moved to Binghamton in 1860,
where he represented the American Tract Society and canvassed for the American
Bible Society. In 1867 returned to the
ministry as pastor at Long Ridge, Connecticut, followed by a pastorate at Peru,
Berkshire County, Massachusetts in 1869.
Retired from active ministry in the fall of 1874 to a small farm on West
End Avenue, Binghamton, Broome County, New York, though he was often called for
temporary service in vacant pulpits. Did
a lot of work on Gilbert and related family histories.

Employed as a real estate broker in Binghamton. On 2 July 1894, and again in August,
exhibited symptoms of a stroke, in which he was somewhat detached from
reality. He remained that way the
remainder of his life, shifting the great burden of operating the household and
rearing the children to his wife, Sarah, who was also ill. Admitted at New York State Mental Hospital,
Binghamton, in 1900.
