Born about 1778 in New Jersey.  Died 12 February 1860; interred Giddingsville Cemetery, Ellisburg Township, Jefferson County, New York.

 

1850 US Census: John Hinman, age 72 (b. NJ) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Ellisburg Township, Jefferson County, New York.  His real estate was valued at $2,500.  The household also included Sally Hinman, age 24; and Rebecca Hinman, age 52.  Sally and Rebecca were, presumably, born in New York (left blank).  His next door neighbor was Samuel Hinman, age 45 (gen 5, below).

Born about 1785.  Died 7 October 1840, age 55; interred with John.

1. Biographical notes:

 

Born about 1805 in Saratoga County, New York.  Died .

 

1850 US Census: Samuel Hinman, age 45, and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Ellisburg Township, Jefferson County, New York.  His real estate was valued at $1,200.  The household also included his wife, Joanna Hinman, age 41; son, Wm G. Hinman, age 12; son, James M. Hinman, age 11; son, George Hinman, age 9; son, Bernia S. Hinman, age 7; daughter, Maria Hinman, age 6; daughter, Mary Hinman, age 5; and son, Albert Hinman, age 3.  All presumably born in New York State (left blank).  His next door neighbor was John Hinman, age 72 (see above).

 

1860 US Census: Samuel Hinman, age 54 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Ellisburg Township, Jefferson County, New York.  His real estate was valued at $6,500 and his personal property was valued at $1,100.  The household also included his wife, Jane Hinman, age 51 (b. NYS); son, William Hinman, age 22 (b. NYS) and employed as a laborer; son, James Hinman, age 21 (b. NYS); son, George Hinman, age 19 (b. NYS); son, Barny Hinman, age 18 (b. NYS); daughter, Mariah Hinman, age 16 (b. NYS) and serving; daughter, Mary Hinman, age 14 (b. NYS); son, Albert Hinman, age 13 (b. NYS); and daughter, Harriett Hinman, age 9 (b. NYS).

 

1865 NYS Census: Samuel Hinman, age 59 (b. Saratoga Co., NY), was heading a household in Ellisburg Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Joanna Hinman, age 55 (b. Otsego Co., NY); daughter, Hannah M. Hinman, age 20 (b. Jefferson Co., NY); Mary A. Hinman, age 19 (b. Jefferson Co., NY); son, Albert D. Hinman, age 18 (b. Jefferson Co., NY); daughter, Harriet F. Hinman, age 13 (b. Jefferson Co., NY); son, James M. Hinman, age 24 (b. Jefferson Co., NY); and son, George W. Hinman, age 23 (b. Jefferson Co., NY).

1875 NYS Census: Samuel Hinman, age 69 (b. Saratoga Co., NY) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Ellisburg Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Joanna Hinman, age 66 (b. Otsego Co., NY), daughter, Maria Hinman, age 31 (b. Jefferson Co., NY), daughter, Mary Hinman, age 30 (b. Jefferson Co., NY), son, Albert Hinman, age 28 (b. Jefferson Co., NY); and daughter, Harriet Hinman, age 24 (b. Jefferson Co., NY).  Of interest, George W. Hinman was heading a household nearby.

 

1880 US Census: Samuel Hinman, age 75 (b. NYS; parents b. NY), a retired farmer, was heading a household in Ellisburg Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He had Brights Disease of the Kidneys.  The household also included his wife, Joanna Hinman, age 70 (b. NYS; father b. RI; mother b. VT); son, Albert Hinman, age 33 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), married, and employed as a farmer; daughter-in-law, Laura Hinman, age 23 (b. NYS; father b. VT; mother b. NYS); and Caroline Emerson, age 64 (b. VT; father b. VT; mother b. NH) and single.

1865 NYS Census: William G. Hinman, age 26 (b. Jefferson Co., NY) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Ellisburg Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Sarah L. Hinman, age 25 (b. Jefferson Co., NY).

 

b. James M. Hinman: Veteran of the American Civil War; enlisted 17 May 1861 in the 10th NY Heavy Artillery Regiment.

 

c. George W. Hinman: Veteran of the American Civil War; enlisted 17 May 1861 in the 10th NY Heavy Artillery Regiment.

 

1875 NYS Census: George W. Hinman, age 34 (b. Jefferson Co., NY) and employed as a farm laborer (presumably for Henry Gill, in whose house it appears he and his family resided), was heading a household in Ellisburg Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Carrie Hinman, age 22 (b. Jefferson Co., NY); daughter, Kate Hinman, age 2 years and 6 months (b. Chenango Co., NY); and daughter, Agnes Hinman, age 9 months (b. Jefferson Co., NY).

 

1880 US Census: Carrie Hinman, age 27 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), married, and employed keeping house, was heading a household in Ellisburg Township, Jefferson County, New York (next door to, or perhaps under the same roof as, the household headed by Samuel Hinman, age 75).  The household also included her daughter, Kate Hinman, age 7 (b. NYS); and daughter, Hinnie Hinman, age 5 (b. NYS).

 

Married Carrie (?) and had the following children:

 

(1. Kate Hinman: Born about 1873 in New York.

 

(2. Agnes "Hinnie" Hinman: (female) Born about 1875 in New York.

 

d. Bernia "Barney" Samuel Hinman (could be Samuel Bernia): Veteran of the American Civil War; enlisted 9 August 1862 in the 10th NY Heavy Artillery Regiment.

 

e. Hannah Mariah Hinman "Mariah": Born 1844.  Died 1919, age 74.

 

f. Mary Ann Hinman: Died 1920.  Married (?) Sargent.

Born about 1847 in New York.  Died 27 May 1886, age 39 years and 2 months; interred Giddingsville Cemetery, Ellisburg Township, Jefferson County, New York.

 

2. Wife: Laura Estell Emerson

 

Born 8 February 1857 in Jefferson County, New York; daughter of Caroline Emerson (b. VT).  Died 19 March 1941, age 84, at Belleville, Adams Township, Jefferson County, New York; interred Woodside Cemetery, Ellisburg, Jefferson County, New York.  Married (1st) Albert D. Hinman by 1880 and had the following children: (order uncertain) 

 

a. Florence M. (Hinman) Newcomb: See generation 3, below.

 

b. Louis Hinman: Born about 1884.  Died 16 January 1886, age 2 years and 2 months; interred Giddingsville Cemetery, Ellisburg Township, Jefferson County, New York.

 

c. Child.

 

Following Albert Hinman's death in 1886, Laura (Emerson) Hinman married (2nd), as his 2nd wife, Kinner Samuel Newcomb in 1890, who was employed as a commercial traveler (traveling salesman).  Subsequently employed as a poultry farmer.  Kinner may have adopted Laura's daughter, Florence, since it appears she took his surname for a significant period of time.

 

3   Florence M. (Hinman) Newcomb:

 

Born 17 March 1881 at Taylor Settlement, Adams Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 9 October 1976, age 95, at Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.  Married William Alvah Mather, generation 3 of the Mather Annex on 25 December 1901 at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

NYS) and single; son, Freddie L. Rounds, age 13 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS); son, Willie J. Rounds, age 11 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS); and mother, Eunice Hinman, age 69 (b. NYS) and widowed.

 

Married Frances Hinman (b. abt 1832 in NYS), daughter of Eunice Hinman, and had the following children:
