Employed as a farmer; had an 800-acre farm in Wilna Township. At age 12, about 1827, moved with his parents from Connecticut to Champion Township, Jefferson County, New York. About 1850 moved to Wilna Township, Jefferson County, New York.

1850 US Census: Samuel Hubbard, age 30 (b. CT) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Champion Township, Jefferson County, New York. His real estate was valued at $615. The household also included his wife, Jarucia Hubbard, age 21 (b. NYS); son, William Hubbard, age 3 (b. NYS); and son, DeWitt Hubbard, age 10 months (b. NYS).
