“As the ‘legend’ goes, Viola went to stay in Erie, Pennsylvania with her half sister, Abi (Cadwell) Wright to go to business school.  Abi Wright’s husband was a ‘Sea Captain’ on the Great Lakes.  Through him Viola met an acquaintance, who we know only as a ‘sportsman.’  When Viola came back to her parents with a baby boy in her arms, it was a surprise to everyone.  In the meantime, while she was home with her parents she did dress making.  Viola never had the opportunity to take instructions on dress making, but was first known to have gone upstairs and shut herself in a room and made herself a beautiful gown.  From that time on her talents were well known.

It is estimated that Viola lived with her parents for about 10 years, during which time she became friends with Choyce and Belva Bowles, who then lived in that area.  Their brother, Claude, was at that time in a naval academy at Annapolis [, Maryland.]

From this point on we are unsure of how the marriage came about.  George Bowles was about 10 years old at this time.”
