Born 1670/81 at Hurst, Berkshire, England.  Died 22 September 1707 in Northampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.  Was a British soldier stationed at Ireland; then stationed in America, arriving in New York City on 24 October 1700.  With others on that voyage was court-martialed for mutiny; subsequently pardoned and sent to Albany, New York.  Disserted and traveled to Westfield, Massachusetts, where he married.  Subsequently moved to Northampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, where son Nathaniel was born.  May have had other children.

Naphthali Kentfield was born about 1762 in Hampshire County, Massachusetts (perhaps Belchertown, Northampton, or South Hadley, where his parents were married).  Veteran of the Revolutionary War; enlisted at Northampton.

 

1790 US Census: Naphthali Kentfield was heading a household at Hadley, Hampshire County, Massachusetts which contained 1 male over age 16, 1 male under age 16, and 2 females.  Of interest, Elijah Lee, father of Naphthali's wife, was heading a household nearby.

 

Naphthali married Jemima Lee (b. perhaps 13 Sep 1766 at Killingly, CT), daughter of Elijah and Lusana (?) Lee of Hadley, and had the following son:

 

(1) William Lee Kenfield: Born 10 August 1787 at Old Hadley, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.  Died 1 March 1857 in Hastings Township, Barry County, Michigan.  Employed as a farmer.  Married Mary Popple (b. 17 Aug 1794 in Hampton Twp, Washington Co., NY or Bennington Twp, Bennington Co., VT; d. 11 Mar 1860 in Hastings Twp, MI), daughter of Ebenezer (Rev War Vet) and Mary (Johnson) Popple, and moved to Virgil, Wyoming (now Cortland) County, New York.  In 1844 moved to Rutland Township, Barry County, Michigan.  William and Mary had 9 children, including:

 

(a) Hiram Johnson Kenfield: The eldest.  Born 16 November 1812 in Virgil Township, Wyoming (now Cortland) County, New York.  Died 28 June 1877.  In 1837 moved to Michigan, settling 1st near Duck Lake in Calhoun County.  In November 1839 moved to Hastings Township, Barry County, Michigan, where Hiram became a prominent citizen.  Married (1st) Polly Marid Ingraham (b. abt 1820 in NYS, d. 2 Jan 1847), daughter of Frederick Ingraham, in 1840 in Hastings Township and had the following son:

William Frederick Kenfield: Born 30 June 1846 in Hastings Township, Barry County, Michigan.  Died 2 March 1929 at Lewiston, Nez Perce County, Idaho.  Veteran of Union Army during the Civil War.  Subsequently employed as an attorney and US District Attorney for the Dakota Territory.  Married (1st) Mary Matilda Kennedy (b. 1845, d. 1881) on 1 May 1871 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; no known children.  Married (2nd) Etoile L'Orient Thomas (b. 1857, d. 1941) in 1881 at (perhaps) Woonsocket, Sanborn County, Dakota Teritory (now S. Dakota) and had the following children:

Standish (b. 7 Jun 1827 in Benson Twp, Rutland Co., VT; d. 12 Mar 1923 at Chicago, Cook Co., IL; interred Hastings Twp, MI), daughter of Henry and Abigail (Parkhill) Standish of Hastings, Barry County, Michigan.  The Standishs were originally from Benson Township, Rutland County, Vermont, and Henry was a descendant of Mayflower passenger, Captain Myles/Miles Standish (b. 1584, d. 3 Oct 1656, age 72).  Hiram and Sophia had the following children:

8   Ebenezer Kentfield

 

1. Biographical notes:

 

Born 1704 in Northampton County, Massachusetts, perhaps the son of William Kentfield, generation 9, above.  Died 14 December 1755/56 (age 51) at Fort William Henry (near Lake George), New York during the French and Indian War; interred South Cemetery in Belchertown.  His death was the first recorded at the church in Belchertown, Massachusetts (originally Cowle’s Spring, then Cold Spring, then, in 1761, Belcher Town in honor of Territorial Governor Jonathan Belcher).

 

Ebenezer was at Belchertown when he went to war.  It is not known if his remains were actually returned to Belchertown, but his name is beside his wife’s on the gravestone in South Cemetery.  A grandson of this Ebenezer Kentfield said his grandfather Kentfield came from the west side of the river to Belchertown.

Born about 1704.  Died 22 April 1781 (age 77) at Belchertown, Massachusetts from complications “of a great cold. She was poor in this world, but a professor of religion and respected;” interred South Cemetery, Belchertown.  Married Ebenezer Kentfield in 1715? (11 years old?)

(1. Dorcas Kentfield: Born 1 February 1759 at Belchertown, Massachusetts.  Married Cyril Leach of Goshen, Massachusetts on 22 August 1782.

(5. Erastus Kentfield: Born 18 February 1765 at Belchertown, Massachusetts.  Served in Shay’s Rebellion.  From various records appears to have moved west.  Married (1st) Molly Crowfoot (d. 21 Nov 1795) and had the following children:

(b. Fanny Kentfield: Born 4 August 1794.  Died 28 April 1829.

MA) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Algoma Township, Winnebago County, Wisconsin.  His real estate was valued at $1,200.  The household also included his wife, Arthena Canfield, age 43 (b. NYS); son, Alonzo Canfield, age 22 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer; daughter, Catherine Canfield, age 17 (b. NYS); daughter, Abigal Canfield, age 15 (b. NYS); daughter, Josophein Canfield, age 13 (b. NYS); daughter, Harriette Canfield, age 11 (b. NYS); son, Orville Canfield, age 10 (b. NYS); daughter, Minerva Canfield, age 8 (b. 1860 US Census: Selah Canfield, age 53 (b. MA) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Algoma Township (Oshkosh Post Office), Winnebago County, Wisconsin.  His real estate was valued at $3,000, and his personal property was valued at $600.  The household also included his wife, Pathina Canfield, age 50 (b. NYS); Alonzo, age 32 (b. NYS) and employed as a farm laborer; daughter-in-law, Celignes [Sabrina?], age 20 (b. NYS); granddaughter, Melissa Canfield, age 3 (b. WI); and daughter, Catherine Canfield, age 28 (b. NYS).

 

1870 US Census: Celah Canfield, age 65 (b. MA) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Algoma Township, Winnebago County, Wisconsin.  His real estate was valued at $6,000, and his personal property was valued at $1,500.  The household also included his wife, Parthena Canfield, age 61 (b. NYS); son, Givaldus Canfield, age 18 (b. WI) and employed as a farmer; and farm hand, Nicholas Hammersman, age 28 (b. Prussia).

 

1875 WI Census: Selah Kenfield was heading a household in Algoma Township, Winnebago County, Wisconsin.  The household included 1 white male and 1 white female.  Of interest, the household headed by J. Kenfield was enumerated directly before him on the same census page, and that household included 1 white male and 1 white female.  Before that, on the same census page, the household headed by Alonzo Kenfield was enumerated, and it included 3 white males and 5 white females. 

 

1880 US Census: Selah Kenfield, age 76 (b. MA; parents birth location unknown) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Algoma Township, Winnebago County, Wisconsin.  The household also included his wife, Parthena Kenfield, age 72 (b. NYS; parents birth location unknown).  Of interest, the household headed by his son, A. Kenfield, age 32, was enumerated directly before him on the same census page.

 

Selah Kenfield married Parthenia B. Stanford (photos) (b. 13 Nov 1808 in Leyden Twp, Lewis Co., NY, d. 3 Apr 1894, age 85, in Algoma Twp, Winnebago Co., WI; interred there with Selah), daughter of Richard and Parthenia (?) Stanford (also great-great-granddaughter of Lord Stanford of England), and moved to Wisconsin via oxen team.  Selah and Parthena had the following children:

 

(1) Alonzo C. Kenfield: (photos) Born 8 October 1827 in Leyden Township, Lewis County, New York.  Died 27 August 1891 (also seen: d. 2 Nov 1917), age 64, in Algoma Township, Winnebago County, Wisconsin; interred Ellenwood Cemetery, Oshkosh, Winnebago County, Wisconsin.

 

1875 WI Census: Alonzo Kenfield was heading a household in Algoma Township, Winnebago County, Wisconsin.  The household included 3 white males and 5 white females.  Of interest, the households headed by J. Kenfield and Selah Kenfield were enumerated after him on the same census page.

 

1880 US Census: A. Kenfield, age 52 (b. NYS; father b. MA; mother b, NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Algoma Township, Winnebago County, Wisconsin.  The household also included his wife, Sabrina Kenfield, age 40 (b. Born 1750 in Kent County, England.  Died 16 November 1787; interred South Cemetery, Belchertown, Massachusetts.  Immigrated to America about 1760 with his wife, two sons and a daughter-in-law, settling near Oakham, Massachusetts in a crude log cabin, which shortly thereafter was destroyed by fire ignited by lightning.  They lost all of their belongs except a brass kettle, in which they did all of their cooking.  It was a desperate situation when Mr. And Mrs. Bratton, who apparently inspired the Kentfields to follow them to Whittingham, Vermont.

Born 16 September 1919 at Rodman, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 8 September 1994; took his own life on Pink School House Road near Evans Mills; cremated 11 September.  Operated a dairy farm at Burrville, Jefferson County, New York.  Was also employed for a period of time as a Deputy Sheriff.

 

2.  Military service:

 

Inducted into the US Army at Pontiac, Michigan on 7 September 1942.  Received training at Camp Crowder, Missouri.  In January 1943 was sent to Camp McCain, Mississippi; then to Tennessee for maneuvers.  Was a member of the Signal Corps and was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic actions during World War II.

Born 21 April 1924 on the family farm in LeRay Township (near Evans Mills), Jefferson County, New York, daughter of Howard and Jessie Mae (Kelsey) Van Allen.  Died 13 August 2020 at home in Henderson Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Married (1st) Gordon Francis Kenfield on 23 April 1942 at Theresa, Jefferson County, New York; divorced in 1978.
