1840 US Census: Of interest (thought ages don't align well with 1850 & 1855), there was a John H. Lane heading a household in Champion Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household included 1 male age 50 to 60 and 1 female age 60 to 70.

1850 US Census: Of interest (though ages don't align well with 1855 ages), there was a John H. Lane, age 73 (b. England) residing in Champion Township, Jefferson County, New York.  That household also included his wife, Mary Lane, age 60 (b. MA); Josiah H. Phillips, age 38 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer with real estate valued at $1,200; Josiah's wife, Loraine Phillips, age 29 (b. NYS); Josiah's daughter, Lucy A. Phillips, age 8 (b. NYS); and Josiah's son, Orin Phillips, age 6 (b. NYS).

1855 NYS Census: John H. Lane, age 73 (b. England) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Wilna Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Sarah Lane, age 64 (b. England); and daughter, Esther P. Hare, age 25 (b. VT), who was not divorced.  They had all resided there, in Wilna Township, for 4 years.

1860 US Census: John H. Lane, age 78 (b. England), was heading a household in Wilna Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He owned the real estate on which he resided, valued at $400, and his personal property was valued at $125.  The household also included his wife, Sarah Lane, age 71 (b. England); and daughter, Esther P. Hare, age 30 (b. VT).

1865 NYS Census: John H. Lane, age 84 (b. England) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Wilna Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He had been married twice, and was recorded as being married (not a widower) when the census was taken; he owned his property; and he was a naturalized citizen.  The household also included his daughter, Esther P. Hare, age 35 (b. VT) and single; and "adopted child" Mary A. Hare, age 1 year and 8 months (b. Jefferson Co., NY), who had apparently been adopted by Esther.

2. Wife #1: Mary (?) (perhaps)

a. Biographical notes:

Born about 1790 in Massachusetts.  Died in New York; appears her will was recorded on page 80 of book 2 of Jefferson County (Champion Twp), New York records.  Before moving to New York State, perhaps resided in Vermont, where her daughter, Esther was born.

1   Esther P. (Lane?)(Hare?):

Born about 1830 in Vermont.  Died in New York State.  Perhaps married (1st) (?) Hare, but since a marriage record has not been found, Hare could be her surname at birth.  Married, as his 2nd wife, Almond Drake, generation 9 of the Ancestors of George Edgar Drake between 1870 and 1875.
