1840 US Census: Jediah Mattison, age 40 to 50, was heading a household in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included 1 male under age 5; 2 males age 10 to 15; 1 male age 20 to 30; 2 females age 15 to 20; 1 female age 20 to 30; and 1 female age 30 to 40.

 

1860 U.S. Census: Judiah Mattison, age 61 and employed as a farmer, was head of a household in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Other members of the household included his wife, Lucinda, age 54; their son, Charles A. Mattison, age 29; Charles' wife, Lois, age 29; and the son of Charles and Lois, Franklin B. Mattison, age 1.  Judiah was born in Vermont; Lucinda, Charles, and Franklin were born in New York; Lois was born in Massachusetts.

 

1870 US Census: Judiah, age 71 and retired, and his wife, Lucinda (age 65), were living in the household of their son, Charles A. Mattison, age 39 and employed as a farmer.

VT, retired); Lucinda Mattison (age 65, b. NYS); and Sarah Bennett (age 30, b. NYS, employed as a house keeper).

Charles F. Mattison married Catherine “Kate” Rice (b. 22 Jun 1861 in Antwerp Twp., N.Y., d. Sunday, 21 May 1933, age 71, at home in Sterlingville, Jefferson Co., N.Y.; interred Sterlingville Cemetery) about 1889 at Redwood, New York and subsequently resided at Philadelphia, Jefferson County, New York.  Of interest, Kate had a sister, Susan Rice, who married (?) Whalen and resided at Carthage, Jefferson County, New York.  Question: Is Kate related to Lillian (Rice) (Smith) Baxter, half-sister of Ida (Kyle) McCallops, para 3.b. of generation 2 of the McCallops Annex?

Born about 1859 near Evans Mills, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York and continued to reside there.

 

1860 US Census: Franklin B. Mattison, age 1, resided with his parents in the household headed by his grandfather, Judiah Mattison, age 61, in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.

 

1870 US Census: Frank Mattison, age 11, resided with the household headed by his father in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.

 

1910 U.S. Census: Frank H. Mattison, age 47 and employed as a farmer, was head of a household on LeRaysville Road in LeRay Township, New York.  He had been married to Sarah, age 46, for 22 years.  Sarah had had 7 children, all of whom were still living.  Other members of the household included their daughter, Stella V./J. (sp), age 17 and single; son, James/Jamie F., age 12; son, Elmer, age 10; son, Arthur, age 5; and son, Leon, age 3.  Living next door as a servant in the household of Buel H. Ward was Grace Mattison, age 21 (probably another daughter).  Frank and his parents were born in New York State.  Sarah was born in English speaking Canada, though her parents were born in New York.

 

1920 US Census: Sarah Mattison, age 55 (b. English speaking Canada, parents b. NYS) and widowed, was heading a household on Main Street in Sterlingville, Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included her son, Leon Mattison (age 13); and daughter, Alice Marion Mattison (age 9).

1930 US Census: Roy Mattison, age 39, single, and employed as a dairy farm laborer, was living in the household headed by William A. Schwartz in Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York.

 

b. Grace Mary Mattison: (more info) Born 5 July 1888 at Philadelphia, Jefferson County, New York.  Died about 1970 (age 82) at the Carthage Area Hospital, Carthage, Jefferson County, New York; interred Great Bend Cemetery.  Attended LeRaysville and Sterlingville schools.  Was employed in the C. E. Francis Clothing Store in Carthage for 8 years, then at Empsall’s Department Store in Watertown, Jefferson County, New York, retiring in 1954.  In 1941 resided at Watertown.  Moved to Great Bend, Jefferson County, New York in 1960.  Member of the Woolworth Memorial Methodist Church in Great Bend.  Never married.

   

1910 US Census: Grace Mattison, age 21 and single, was enumerated in her parents’ household, above, as well as next door in the household of Buel H. Ward (age 76, employed as a farmer on LeRaysville Road, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York), where she was employed as a servant.  The household also included Buel’s wife of 50 years, Roxeal (sp) E. Ward (age 71, had had 7 children, all still alive); and Buel’s son, Brayton J. Ward (age 41, single).

 

1930 US Census: Grace M. Mattison, age 41, single, and employed as a sales lady in a department store, was lodging in the household headed by Allie M Brierton (age 46, widowed, 1st m. age 21) at 947 Franklin Street in the City of Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included Alice M. Mattison (age 19, single, employed as a sales lady in a 5 $ 10 cent store); Allie's son, Carlton E. Brierton (age 18, single); and daughter, Erma A. Brierton (age 16, single). 

 

Note: There’ s some confusion here.  The 1910 census indicates Grace was age 21, which means she would have been b. about 1889.  However, a 25 Mar 1962 news article on her death said she was age 48, indicating she was born about 1914.

d. James “Jamie” F. Mattison: (photos) Born about 1898/97.  Died 1986.  Resided at Philadelphia, Jefferson County, New York.

 

e. Elmer Mattison: (photos) Born about 1900.  Married Helen (?) and resided in Watertown, Jefferson County, New York before moving to Waterville, Oneida County, New York (south of Utica).  In 1970 resided at Eaugallie, Florida.  Elmer and Helen had at least the following daughter:

Eileen Bernice Mattison: (more info) Graduated from Waterville High School, Waterville, Oneida County, New York in 1943.  Subsequently graduated from Morrisville Technical Institute, followed by Cortland College with a degree in Practical Nursing.  Was employed privately as a practical nurse.  Married Charles Henry Sanders of Burwell, Nebraska on Monday, (?) at the First Presbyterian Church, Waterville, Oneida County, New York and subsequently resided at Waterville.  Charles served 4˝ years in the European Theater of Operations during World War II.  He was employed at James Kelly’s garage, Sangerfield, New York.

 

f. Arthur Mattison: Born about 1905.  Resided at Carthage, Wilna Township, Jefferson County, New York.  In 1970 resided at Marcellus, New York.

 

g. Leon Mattison: Born about 1907/06.  Died 1978.  Married Nancy Clemons/Clemens (b. 1915), daughter of Milton Clemons of North Wilna Township, Jefferson county, New York, on Tuesday, 23 November 1937 and resided at Philadelphia, Jefferson County, where Leon managed a gasoline station.  Later resided at Carthage, New York.  In 1970 resided at Deer River, Jefferson County, New York.

   

1930 US Census: Leon Matteson, age 23 (single) and employed as a sales manager of a gas station, was living alone and heading a household on the Evans Mills to Calcium Road in the Village of Evans Mills, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.

1930 US Census: Alice M. Mattison, age 19, single, and employed as a sales lady in a 5 & 10 cent store, was lodging with her sister, Grace M. Mattison (age 41, single, employed as a sales lady in a department store) in the household headed by Allie M. Brierton (age 46, widowed, m. 1st age 21) at 947 Franklin Street in the City of Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included Allie's son, Carlton E. Brierton (age 18, single); and daughter, Erma A. Brierton (age 16, single).

 

Alice Mattison married Landis E. McCallops (killed in action during WWII) (Para. 4.d.(2.(a.(2)(a) of the Almond Drake page) on Sunday, (?) and resided at Champion, Jefferson County, New York.  Before entering the U.S. Army Landis worked for the Great Bend Paper Company, Great Bend, Jefferson County, New York.  Alice and Landis had the following daughters before his death in the War:
