Born 15 September 1800 in France.  Died 3 November 1889; interred Saint Vincent de Paul Cemetery, Cape Vincent Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Immigrated to the United States.  In 1832 moved to Cape Vincent, Jefferson County, New York, settling on Route 26.

 

1850 US Census: No record found; reportedly resided in Cape Vincent Township, Jefferson County, New York.

1860 US Census: No record found; reportedly resided in Cape Vincent Township, Jefferson County, New York.

 

1865 NYS Census: Francis Marchand, age 63 (b. France) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Cape Vincent Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He had been married twice and his frame house was valued at $1,000.  The household also included his wife, Margaret Marchand, age 46 (b. France) and mother of 2, who had also been married twice; and son, Claud (sp) Marchand, age 15 (b. Jefferson Co., NY) and employed as a farmer.

 

1870 US Census: No record found; reportedly resided in Cape Vincent Township, Jefferson County, New York.

 

1875 NYS Census: No record found; reportedly resided in Cape Vincent Township, Jefferson County, New York.

 

1880 US Census: No record found; reportedly resided in Cape Vincent Township, Jefferson County, New York.

Born 3 July 1818 in France (also seen: b. Aug 1819 in France).  Died Sunday, 11 February 1906, age 87 years and 6 months, at home near Tylerville, Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York; interment Rosiere Cemetery.  Immigrated to the United States in 1850 (age 20).  Always resided near Tylerville.  Had a sister, Mrs. Mary Marchaud of Gouverneur and a brother, John Absalon of St. Lawrence County.

 

1900 US Census: Margaret Merchand, age 81 (b. Aug 1819 in France; parents b. France; immigrated to the US in 1850), widowed, and mother of 8, 1 of whom was alive, resided in the household headed by her son-in-law, Lyman B. Canfield, age 63 (b. Mar 1837 in NYS) and employed as a farmer, in Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included Margaret's daughter and Lyman's wife of 41 years, Mary D. Canfield, age 60 (b. Aug 1840 in NYS; parents b. France).

 

1905 NYS Census: Margaret Merchant, age 86, resided in the household headed by her son-in-law, Lyman B. Canfield, age 69, in Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York (pg 4, lines 17-19).  The household also included Margaret's daughter (Lyman's wife), Mary C. Canfield, age 67.

1850 US Census: Lyman Canfield, age 15 (b. NYS) and in school, resided in the household headed by Henry Canfield, age 22 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, in Clayton Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included Eveline Canfield, age 19 (b. NYS).

 

1860 US Census: Chauncy Canfield, age 29 (b. NYS) was heading a household in Pinckney Township, Lewis County, New York.  The household also included Pursey Canfield, age 9 (b. NYS); Lyman Canfield, age 26 (b. NYS); Mary Canfield, age 20 (b. NYS); and Emma Canfield, age 2 (b. NYS).

 

1870 US Census: Lyman Canfield, age 37 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Lyme Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Mary Canfield, age 29 (b. NYS); daughter, Emma Canfield, age 12 (b. NYS); and son, George Canfield, age 1 (b. NYS).

 

1880 US Census: L.B. Canfield, age 42 (b. NYS) was heading a household in Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Mary Canfield, age 40 (b. NYS); daughter, Emma Canfield, age 22 (b. NYS); son, George Canfield, age 12 (b. NYS); and son-in-law, George Green, age 22 (b. NYS).

 

Mary C. Merchant married Lyman B. Canfield (b. Mar 1837 in NYS; parents b. MA), who was employed as a farmer, and in 1900 resided in Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York.  They had the following children:

 

(a. Emma Canfield: Born about 1858 in New York.  Married George Green (b. abt 1858 in NYS).

 

(b. George Canfield: Born about 1868 in New York.

 

3   Henry Merchant:

 

Born 5 December 1836 in Cape Vincent Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died there 1 May 1898, age 61.  Married Christina Kirchner, paragraph D.5. of generation 3 of the Kirchner Annex on .
