1. Biographical notes:
Born 14 January 1844 at Wandaw, Regierung Bezirk,
Marienwerder/Marinvader, West Prussia.
Died 14 April 1927, age 83, in Fairgrove Township, Tuscola County, Michigan;
interred there in Brookside Cemetery. Had at least a 10th
grade education. Served in the German
Army. Immigrated to the United States aboard one of the 1st
steam ships, which took just six weeks; had been recruited in Germany to work
in the salt mines near Detroit, Michigan. Spelling of surname, Manthey, was changed to Montei during the process of
immigrating to the United States. Subsequently returned to Germany 3 times to visit family.
Did not like salt mine work and the virtual imprisonment associated
with his indenture, so he escaped, finding work on a farm in Salem Township,
Washtenaw County, Michigan. In May 1875 moved his young family to
Fairgrove Township, Tuscola County, Michigan, where he cleared land from the
forest, built a log cabin (unfortunately, right on the eventual road right of
way, so shortly after completion it had to be demolished and replaced by a wood
frame structure), and developed a productive farm. Fred and his descendants who resided in that
area were active members of the Fairgrove Church, which was initially organized
in 1876, just after his arrival in the area.
That church was completely destroyed by fire on Saturday, 26 February
1966 at about 11 PM and was never rebuilt.
