MacArthur, John B. 3B (84) #.jpg

1. Biographical notes:

Born 15 April 1831 on the Isle of Islay, Argyleshire, Scotland; 4th child of John and Ann (McKeegan) MacArthur.  Died 17 March 1921/23 at Cheboygan, Cheboygan County, Michigan; interred there in Pine Hill Cemetery.  At 2 years of age (1833) John immigrated to Canada with his parents and siblings, settling at Glace Bay, north east of Sidney, Nova Scotia.  Following schooling in that area, he apprenticed 3 years as a millwright (building mills) with Samuel Petch, earning $1 per day (which was lot at that time).  Simultaneously John studied civil engineering, specializing in surveying.  When his brother, Archibald, moved to Ontario in 1856, John accompanied him, purchasing a farm on the southeast shore of Balsam Lake, near Killarney Bay, Fenelon Township, Victoria County, Canada.  Practiced civil engineering for 2 years at Brocklin, Ontario, Canada, where he assisted Samuel Cliff in various matters.  Lured by the higher pay, John sold his farm to his brother, Archibald, and returned to building mills at several locations in Ontario.

Immigrated from Canada to Bay City, Michigan in 1865, then shortly after to Saginaw, Michigan, employed as a millwright at both locations.  Created the middle initial "B." to differentiate himself from another John MacArthur living in the same area of Michigan at the same time.  There was no middle name associated with the initial.  In 1868 John continued in that capacity at Detroit, Michigan, "where he built one of the most complete saw (lumber) mills then operated in the state, for Hubbard and King."  He was also married there in late 1869.  In 1871 was employed by the Thompson and Smith Company, which specialized in constructing and operating lumber mills.  The last mill John helped build was in the period 1878 to 1879 for Nelson and Bullen at Duncan City (mouth of the Cheboygan River), a community that was later named Cheboygan, the county seat of Cheboygan County.

John owned and operated a sawmill across from the Duncan City tannery.  Was County Road Commissioner when Beaugrand Road was constructed west from State Street.  Also served on the City Council and City Board of Education for many terms.  Eventually retired from the hands-on lumber business, transitioning to land and lumber development - clearing land and selling it for farm and community use.  In 1886 John B. MacArthur purchased from the original homesteader a farm near Levering, McKinley Township, Emmet County, Michigan.
