1. Biographical notes:

 

Born 1838 in Ireland.  Died 1916, age 78 from complications of old age in the United States.  Emigrated from Ireland to the United States in the 1850s.  Veteran of the Civil War; served in the US Marine Corps aboard the steam frigate "Minnesota;" discharged 5 June 1865 at Brooklyn, New York.  In 1891 resided at Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey.  In 1903 resided at 381 North 20th Street, Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio.  Employed as a shoemaker.  Apparently had a disability related to the throat and chest.  Had no means of supporting or educating his children, so, based on his military service, the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphan Home accepted John's children.

(1. John S. Nangle: Born 10 January 1891 at Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey.  Admission to the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphan Home applied for 7 January 1903 and approved 17 January 1903.  Arrived at the orphanage Home on 2 February 1903, where he was initially assigned to Cottage 18.  Ran away from the orphanage "as soon as he could."  In 1944 resided at Orlando, Orange County, Florida, where he was employed in the fruit business.

 

(2. Anna Marie Nangle: Born about 1892.  For a period of time was a resident at the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphan Home (OSSOH), Xenia, Greene County, Ohio.  Subsequently employed as a payroll clerk.  In 1944 resided at 268 North Eureka Avenue, Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio.  Was appointed guardian of her brother, Joseph's children on 13 July 1944, because when Joseph died (22 Jun 1944), Joseph's wife, Eva, was a patient diagnosed with mental illness at the State Hospital, Columbus.  In that capacity, Anna applied for admission of her nephew, Warren, and niece, Carol to OSSOH, and her application was approved.

 

(3. Agnes Nangle: Born about 1893.  For a period of time was a resident at the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphan Home, Xenia, Greene County, Ohio.  Married (?) Howard and in 1944 resided at Houston, Texas.

 

(4. Peter Nangle: For a period of time was a resident at the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphan Home, Xenia, Greene County, Ohio.  Apparently resided last, under an assumed name, in the Pacific islands.

(6. Mary E. Nangle: Born about 1903.  For a period of time was a resident at the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphan Home, Xenia, Greene County, Ohio.  Married (?) Witherspoon and in 1944 resided at Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio.

 

(7. Catherine Elizabeth Nangle: Born about 1905.  For a period of time was a resident at the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphan Home, Xenia, Greene County, Ohio.  Married Dowey Weidman and in 1944 resided at Detroit, Michigan.

1. Biographical notes:

 

Born 7 May 1900 (also seen: 17 May 1901) at Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio.  Died there 22 June 1944.  When his parents were unable to support him and his siblings, Joseph was admitted to the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphan Home, Xenia, Greene County, Ohio (application 7 Jan 1903; approval 17 Jan 1903; arrival 23 Aug 1906).  Veteran of World War I (3 May 1917 to 24 Jul 1919 was a Private in Company E., 118th Infantry).  Height: 5 foot, 10 inches.  Eye color: blue.  Hair color: iron gray in 1944.  Employed as an attorney.  In 1934 resided at 2463 ½ Cleveland Avenue, Columbus, Ohio. 

 

2. Wife: Eva Lucille (Bowers) Woods

 

Born 22 June 1908 at Centerburg, Knox County, Ohio, daughter of W. O. and Joanna (Stafford) Bowers, who in 1944 was employed as a farmer at Laurelville, Ohio (they also had a daughter, Dr. Audrey (Bowers) Atkinson (d. age 36 (before 1944) from complications of tuberculosis, contracted from a nurse with whom she worked).  Eva died .  Married (1st) (?) Woods about 1927.  Married (2nd) Joseph Charles Nangle on 18 June 1932 at Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio.  In 1944 was a patient diagnosed with mental illness at the State Hospital, Columbus, Ohio and, thus, not competent to care for her three children.

Born 21 November 1934 at St. Clair Hospital, Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio (10:20 AM).  Died 30 December 1969 at Wildwood, Sumter County, Florida; took his own life.  For a period of time was a resident at the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphans' Home (OSSOH), Xenia, Greene County, Ohio.  Married Patricia Anne Slater, descendant #1.1 of generation 8 the Descendants of Martha Hazel-Mae (Cool)(Slater)(Finney) Smith in July 1966 at Orlando, Orange County, Florida.
