1860 U.S. Census: Chester Orvis, age 35 and employed as a farmer, lived in the household of William Merrill, age 53, and was employed as a farmer in southern Champion Township, Jefferson County, New York.  William Merrill's real estate was valued at $4,000 and his personal property was valued at $600.  Chester was credited with $500 of real estate and $100 of personal property.  Other members of the household included Chester's wife, Esther A. Of interest, there was also a Samuel Orvis, age 82 and employed as a farmer living in the same general area in 1860.  He had living with him a wife named Sally, age 78; daughter, Sally Orvis, age 55 and employed as a domestic; and daughter, Almira Orvis, age 42.  Samuel and his daughter, Sally, were born in Connecticut.  Sally, Sr. was born in Massachusetts, and Almira was born in New York State, indicating the Orvis move to New York was before 1818 and after 1805.
