resided at Hogansville, Georgia. By one
account, Bonney came into Evans Mills on the train,
walked around a little while, and said: "It hasn't changed a bit,"
whereupon he got back on the train and left town. By another account, one day Bonney arrived in Evans Mills on the train, got off, and
walked past his brother, William, who asked him: "What are you doing
here?" Bonney
replied he had come to see his parents.
William said to him: "Well then, you might as well get back on the

1 William B. Palmer:
"Bill" (also seen: "S.
Palmer" as a teenager and "William S. Palmer, Jr." as a young
adult)
also known as (aka): William Smith Palmer, Sr.*
* Note: It appears from
the 1905 and 1915 New York State Censuses that this William Palmer was named
William B. Palmer at birth. However, as
a teenager he was referred to as S. Palmer, and by the time of the 1920 and
1930 US Censuses, when he still resided with his parents, he was known as
William S. Palmer, Jr. and William Palmer, Jr., respectively. Assuming the early records are correct, it
seems likely he and/or his parents felt a mistake had been made in not
initially naming him William S. Palmer, Jr., so they began doing so by at least
1920. When he married in 1939 he was
referred to as William S. Palmer. From
this history one might expect that if he named a son after himself, that son's
name would be William S. Palmer, III, but not so. He did name his first son William Smith
Palmer, but with suffix "Jr."
At that point he (William B. Palmer) began referring to himself as
William Smith Palmer, Sr., which he continued to do, formally and informally,
for the remainder of his life. William
B. Palmer's daughter, Diantha (Palmer) Kinney, recalled her father being angered when he saw his
name written (in his opinion incorrectly) in the family Bible, at which time he
changed the Bible entry. Diantha did not see the original Bible entry or the change,
and, unfortunately, the Bible in question was loaned to a cousin, who refused
to return it.
William B. Palmer, aka
William Smith Palmer, Sr., was born 18/16 September 1900 in Jefferson County,
New York. He died 26 January 1990 at
Evans Mills, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York; interred there in New
Evans Mills Cemetery. Married Harriette
Elcy Slater, descendant #3 of the Descendants of Martha Hazel-Mae
(Cool)(Slater)(Finney) Smith on 17 July 1939.
