Note: Vincent Ellsworth Slater said: "Menzo
came from Otsego County, New York. I
vaguely recall my grandmother, Ida (Pickard) Slater, mentioning 'Cherry Valley'
as his place of origin, but I'm not certain of this. She always said she was 'Mohawk Dutch' to
make sure she was not confused with the Pennsylvania Dutch, who are of Dutch
heritage. She claimed that her ancestors
kept moving up the Hudson River, then the Mohawk River, to distance themselves
from the English."
