Born 13/11 December 1760 at Esopus, Orange County, New York.  Died 14 March 1826, age 65, at home on his farm in Middle Smithfield Township, Monroe) County, Pennsylvania; interred churchyard of the Middle Smithfield Presbyterian Church, left of the church (DAR marker).  Veteran of the Revolutionary war; in 1780 was a Private in Captain Henry Shoemaker’s Company of the Northampton County, Pennsylvania Militia.  Subsequently became well off and resided in Monroe County, Pennsylvania.

 

While still a soldier, married Phoebe/Phebe Winans (more info)(b. 15 Dec 1758 at/near Perth Amboy, Middlesex Co., N.J., d. 9 May 1845, age 86 (also seen: d. 9 Jun 1845, age 84), at Porterville (Homets Ferry area), Wyalusing Twp, Bradford Co. PA; initially interred in the old Vaughan Hill Cemetery on the Lill Vaughan Farm, but in Jun 1882 was moved to the Biles Cemetery on the hill above Homets Ferry), daughter of Adjutant/Captain Jacob Winans (b. May 1726, d. May 1810, Vet of Rev War) of New Jersey and his 1st wife, Rebeccah Phoebe Clark (m. 1750, d. 175?), in January 1781/80 in Smithfield Township, Northampton (later Monroe) County, Pennsylvania.  In her later years Phoebe resided with her daughter, Rosannah (Place) Biles and Rosannah’s husband, Alexander Patterson Biles, at Homets Ferry, Wyalusing Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.

 

James and Phoebe (Winans) Place had at least the following children, three of whom are direct ancestors of John Addison Biles, who, in an edition of the Wyalusing Rocket wrote: “James Place and Phoebe Winans had 115 grandchildren and over 700 great grandchildren.”

Jacob Place: Born 4 December 1782 in Middle Smithfield Township, Northampton County, Monroe County, Pennsylvania.  Baptized there 23 September 1787/9 July 1788.  Died 27 January 1816, age 33, from a cold he caught while participating in the War of 1812; interred 29 January in Coolbaugh Cemetery in Monroe County, Pennsylvania (also seen: interred churchyard of Middle Smithfield Presbyterian Church).  Married Mary “Polly” Overfield (d. 1871; Methodist) (Para. 3.c.(1.(b. of gen 5 of the Overfield Annex), daughter of William and Sarah (Coolbaugh) Overfield, and had the following children (Mary was left to raise their still young children when her husband died young):

Born 25 May 1833.  Interred Lime Hill.  Knew the Alexander Patterson Biles family before it moved west, and that’s probably why Alexander Patterson Biles stopped at a log cabin on the “Butts farm” on 17 April 1825, which was then owned by George E. Butts, and they resided there until moving to one of the French cabins and worked for the LaPorts at Asylum in the fall of 1925.

 

S.S. Butts was a farmer and managed bees.  He was also instrumental in construction of the Lime Hill Church in 1881.  Simpson Butts married Ursula Charlotte Bowen (photos), daughter of Elias Smith and Miriam (Shumway) Bowen of Wyoming County, Pennsylvania, on 1 December 1864 and had at least the following children:

Elizabeth DePew).  Moved to Missouri on 10 April 1871.  Jacob and Rosannah had the following daughters:

 

(a) Etna Place: (more info) Born 7 February 1869 in New Albany Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  Married Dr. Oliver L. Lyon of Greencastle, Indiana and had the following children:

(c) Lou Place: Born 9 June 1873 at Boon Township, Crawford, County, Missouri.  26 December 1895.  Married Reverend Andrew T. Carr and had a son who died as an infant.

 

At the time of the 1850 US Census, Emma (Stevens) Place was residing with her parents.  About 14 years after Jacob Place’s death, Emma (Stevens) Place married (2nd), as his 3rd wife, John Irvine (3).

Captain John Bowden Place: (photos) Born 13 July 1791 in Middle Smithfield Township, Northampton (later Monroe) County, Pennsylvania.  Baptized there 9 November 1794.  Died 16 March 1876 (also seen: 5 Feb 1882); interred Coolbaugh Cemetery, Middle Smithfield Township.  Was a Captain in the Pennsylvania State Militia and referred to as “Captain Place.”  Married Martha Patty Pattie Bunnell (photos) (b. 12 Oct 1786/87/89 in Middle Smithfield Twp, d. 9 Jan 1866; interred with John) (Para. C.5. of gen 3 of the Bunnell Annex), daughter of Benjamin (b. 10 Nov 1742) and Catherine (Barry/Berry) Bunnell (b. 26 Nov 1759), on 10 July 1809 in Middle Smithfield Township, Monroe County, Pennsylvania and resided there on the old Solomon Bunnell farmstead.  John and Pattie (Bunnell) Place had the following daughter:

C.5.a. of the Bunnell Annex) Born 17 April 1810 (also seen: b. 1812).  Died 5 February 1882 (also seen: d. 1892).  Married Jacob Kerrick (photos) (b. 5 Jul 1810, d. 30 Aug 1888 at Asylum, age 78)(gen 3 of the Kerrick Annex), son of Frederick and Eleanor (Delong) Kerrick, on 8 December 1831  at the Asylum Methodist Church, Asylum Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania and resided there.  Hester and Jacob had the following children: (order uncertain)

j. Aaron Bunnell: Born 30 January 1828.  Died 1894.  Married Clementine Lane on 23 April 1849 and had the following daughter:

Eleanor “Lena” Place: Twin.  Born 22/23 December 1794 in Middle Smithfield Township, Monroe County, Pennsylvania.  Died 4 February 1859 at Bunnell Hill, Meshoppen, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania; interred Bunnell Hill Cemetery.  Married Solomon Bunnell (b. 21 Jul 1792 in Middle Smithfield Twp, d. 22 May 1874 at Bunnell Hill) (Para C.8. of gen 3 of the Bunnell Annex), son of Benjamin and Catherine (Barry) Bunnell, and brother of John Bunnell (Para. 8, above), on 19/12 August 1812 in Middle Smithfield Township.  Solomon and Eleanor moved to the Bunnell Hill farm his brother, John vacated in 1814 and they resided there the remainder of their lives, having 5 children.
