VT).  Died 22 March 1898, age 77, at Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence County, New York; interred there in Ogdensburg Cemetery.  Married (1st) Abraham Richards on 1 January 1838 at Bathurst, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada.  Married (2nd) John O'Hagan.

Bain.  At age 38 married (2nd) Edward Liscam (b. abt 1832 at Frellin, NY), age 58, son of Morgan and Betsy (Frienk) Liscam, on 13 July 1890 at Oswegatchie, St. Lawrence County, New York.

 

g. Joseph Richards: Born 24 March 1854 at Eardley, Gatineau, Quebec, Canada.  Died 26 November 1934, age 80 years, 8 months, and 2 days, from complications of heart disease, at Mattawa, Ontario, Canada.  Employed as a gardener.

 

h. George Richards: Born 26 July 1858 at Eardley, Gatineau, Quebec, Canada.  Died 15 April 1942 at Mattawa, Nipissing, Ontario, Canada.  At age 28 married Cecelia McKenzie, age 34, daughter of Andrew and Agnes (?) McKenzie, on 11 April 1888 at Mattawa, Nipissing County, Ontario, Canada.

Born April 1861 in English-speaking Canada (also seen: b. 9 Jul 1860 in Eardley Twp, Ottawa Co., Quebec, Canada and b. NYS).  Died 1946.  Immigrated to the US in 1871.

 

1880 US Census: Of interest, there was a John Richard, age 19 (b. Canada; father b. Ireland; mother b. Canada), single, and employed in a brickyard, who was boarding in the household headed by J. Wesley Mcclure, age 29 (b. NH; parents b. NH) and employed as a brick maker, in Greenfield Township, Franklin County, Massachusetts.

 

1900 US Census: John Richards, age 39 (b. Apr 1861 in Eng-speaking Canada; father b. Fr-speaking Canada; mother's birth location unknown) and employed as a day laborer, was heading a household in Fowler Township, St. Lawrence County, New York.  He immigrated to the US in 1871 and was still an alien.  The household also included his wife of 18 years, Bell Richards, age 33 (b. Nov 1867 in Fr-speaking Canada; parents b. Fr-speaking Canada), who had had 2 children, both still alive; daughter, Bessie Richards, age 17 (b. 1900 US Census: (enumerated 1 Jun 1900) Lincoln Shaw, age 26 (b. Oct 1873 in NYS; father b. NYS; mother; Canada) and employed as a teamster, was heading a household in the Village of Richville, DeKalb Township, St. Lawrence County, New York.  The household also included his mother, Alice Shaw, age 43 (b. Jul 1856 in French-speaking Canada), who immigrated to the US in 1861, had been married 20 years, and had had 2 children, 1 of whom was still alive; wife, Bessie E. Shaw, age 18 (b. NYS) and employed in the wood yard for a paper mill, was heading a household at 2 Lathrop Street in the Village of West Carthage, Champion Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Bessie Shaw, age 40 (b. NYS), with no record of employment, who had completed 8th grade; daughter, Ellen McNeely, age 27 (b. NYS), married (but separated), with no record of employment, who had completed 8th grade; grandson, Edward McNeely, age 3 (b. NYS); and grandson, Richard McNeely, age 1 (b. NYS).  On 1 April 1935 they resided in the same house.

 

Bessie Richards married John Lincoln Shaw "Lincoln" (b. abt 1872 at Richville, DeKalb Twp, St. Lawrence Co., NY, d. 1960), son of Charles (b. NYS) and Alice (?) Shaw (b. Canada), and had the following children:

NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household on Eagle Street in at Philmont, Claverack Township, Columbia County, New York.  He had completed 7th grade.  The household also included his wife, Ella Shaw, age 33 (b. NYS) and employed as a waitress or a sanitarium, who had completed 4 years of high school; daughter, Eleanor M. Shaw, age 11 (b. NYS); and son, George Shaw, age 8 (b. NYS).  On 1 April 1935 they resided in the same township.

 

George Shaw married Ella Shaw and had the following children:

Switzerland) and employed as a laborer in a paper mill, was heading a household at 1 Lathrop Street in the Village of West Carthage, Champion Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He married 1st at age 32, and his residence was valued at $2,300.  The household also included his wife, Flossie B. Stiner, age 25 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), who married 1st at age 18; George L. Stiner, age 6 (b. NYS); daughter, Margaret M. Stiner, age 5 (b. NYS); and son, Ralph F. Stiner, age 3 (b. NYS).

NYS), who had completed 8th grade; son, George Stiner, age 16; daughter, Margaret Stiner, age 15 (b. NYS); son, Ralph Stiner, age 13 (b. NYS); and daughter, Bessie Stiner, age 7 (b. Farney (b. 6 Jan 1894 at Croghan, Lewis Co., NY, d. 27 Apr 1918 at Beaver Falls, Lewis Co., NY).  John and Flossie (Shaw) Stiner had the following children:

English-speaking Canada) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household on McGinnis Road in Waddington Township, St. Lawrence County, New York.  He married 1st at age 26.  The household also included his wife, May L. Hunter, age 22 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), who married 1st at age 20.

 

1940 US Census: Frank D. Hunter, age 37 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Waddington Township, St. Lawrence County, New York.  He had completed 8th grade.  The household also included his wife, Mae L. Hunter, age 32 (b. NYS), who had completed 2 years of high school; son, Warren D. Hunter, age 7 (b. NYS); and hired hand, Peter Cook, age 24 (b. NYS), who had completed 3rd grade.  On 1 April 1935 Frank and his family they resided in the same house; Peter resided in rural Franklin County, New York.

 

At age 21 Mae Shaw married Frank Donald Hunter (b. 11 Apr 1902 at Gouverneur, St. Lawrence Co., NY, d. 31 Dec 1985 at Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence Co., NY), age 26, son of James and Nettie (Duval) Hunter, on 2 December 1928 at Carthage, Wilna Township, Jefferson County, New York and had the following son:

 

(a. Warren Hunter: Born 1933 in Waddington Township, St. Lawrence County, New York.  Died 1947.

 

(5. John Freeman Shaw "Freeman": Born about 1909 in New York.  No clear record found after 1910, when John F. Shaw, age 7 months, resided in the household headed by his father at Fowler, St. Lawrence County, New York.

 

(6. Ellen B. Shaw: Twin. Born 18 August 1913 in New York.  Died 16 January 1999, age 86, at Fall River, Bristol County, Massachusetts.

 

1940 US Census: Ellen McNeely, age 27 (b. NYS), married, but separated from her husband, resided in the household headed by her father, John Shaw, age 68, in Rodman Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included her mother, Bessie Shaw, age 57; son, Edward McNeely, age 3 (b. NYS); and son, Richard McNeely, age 1 (b. NYS). 

 

Ellen Shaw married (?) McNeely (perhaps the Richard C. McNeely, who in 1940 was age 41 (b. WV), married but separated, had completed 1 year of high school, and was a member of the US Army stationed at Fort Ethan Allen, Colchester Township, Chittenden County, Vermont, but on 15 April 1935 had resided at Madison Barracks, Sackets Harbor, Jefferson County, New York, close to where Ellen (Shaw) McNeely resided.  Ellen and her husband had the following children:

 

(a. Edward McNeely: Born about 1937 in New York.

 

(b. Richard McNeely: Born about 1939 in New York.

 

(7. Nellie Alice Shaw: Twin. Born about 1910 in New York.  Died 30 July 1998.

 

1930 US Census: Augustus F. Richardson, age 19 (b. NYS; father b. NYS; mother b. English-speaking Canada) and employed as a dairy farmer, resided in the household headed by his father-in-law, John L. Shaw, age 57, in Rodman Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He married 1st at age 18.  Among others, the household also included his wife, Nellie A. Richardson, age 17 (b. NYS), who married 1st at age 16; and son, Zane G. Richardson, age 1 month (b. NYS).

 

1940 US Census: Augustus Richardson, age 29 (b. NYS) and employed as a wood cutter in the farming industry, was heading a household in Lorraine Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He had completed 6th grade.  The household also included his wife, Nellie Richardson, age 27 (b. NYS), who had completed 8th grade; son, Zane Gray Richardson, age 10 (b. NYS); daughter, Faith Richardson, age 8 (b. NYS); son, Richard Richardson, age 5 (b. NYS); daughter, Pauline Richardson, age 2 (b. NYS); and daughter, Nancy Ann Richardson, age 9 months (b. NYS).  On 1 April 1935 they resided elsewhere in rural Jefferson County, New York. 

 

At age 16 Nellie Shaw married Augustus Frank Richardson (b. 14 Mar 1911 at Remsen, Oneida Co., NY, d. 12 Jan 2007 in Jefferson Co., NY), age 19, son of Frank and Mary (Rensler) Richardson, on 12 March 1930 in Jefferson County, New York and had at least the following son:

 

(a. Zane Gray Richardson: Born 13 March 1930 in Rodman Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 25 July 2004.

 

(b. Faith Richardson: Born 1932.

1900 US Census: William Richards, age 9 (b. Dec 1891 in NYS), resided with his parents in Fowler Township, St. Lawrence County, New York.

 

1910 US Census: Of possible interest, there was a William J. Richards, age 19 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), single, and employed as a farm laborer, residing as a boarder in the household headed by Thomas S. Wicks, age 43 (b. NYS; father b. VT; mother b. NYS) and employed as a dairy farmer on Main Street in the Village of Copenhagen, Denmark Township, Lewis County, New York.

NYS), who had completed 2 years of high school; son, George Richards, age 17 (b. NYS) and single; son, Searl Richards, age 10 (b. NYS); daughter, Barberia [should be Barbara] Richards, age 2 (b. NYS); and son, Altarin [should be Alton] Richards, age 1 (b. NYS).  Of interest, his son, Everitt Richards, age 26, was enumerated directly before him on the same census page.

NYS), who had completed 7th grade and in Apr 1935 resided in Watertown, Jefferson County, New York; and son, Everitt Richards, Jr., age 2.

 

Everett C. Richards married, as her 1st husband, Helen L. Kentfield (b. 2 May 1917 at Watertown, Jefferson Co., NY, d. 2 Oct 1979 at the House of the Good Samaritan Hospital, Watertown; interred Dexter Cemetery, Dexter, Brownville Twp, Jefferson Co.), daughter of Arthur H. and Carrie M. (Lawton) Kentfield, and had the following son:

 

(1) Everitt A. Richards "EAR": Born 1938.  In 1979 resided in Texas.

 

Everett C. and Helen L. (Kentfield) Richards separated permanently after the birth of their son, Everitt A. Richards, apparently never meeting again; subsequently divorced (well after separation).  Helen had the following additional children: (order uncertain)

 

(2) Gerald H. Richards: In 1979 resided in South Carolina.

 

(3) Caroline "Carol" Richards: Married Norman Chapman, and in 1979 resided in Florida.

 

(4) LeeAnn Richards: Married Michael Reynolds, and in 1979 resided in Maryland.  In 2016 resided in Texas.

 

(5) Sandra "Sandy" Richards: Born about 1956.  Married David Mahon, and in 1979 resided in New York.

 

Helen L. (Kentfield) Richards married (2nd) "out of elderly convenience" her father-in-law, William J. Richards, Sr. on 13 May 1960 (see Para. 4, below) and resided at Adams Center, Adams Township, Jefferson County, New York.

 

(b. William "Keith" John Richards, II: Born about 1915 in New York.  Died ; interred Felts Mills Cemetery, Felts Mills, Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Veteran of World War II; enlisted 7 January 1942 at Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York; was single and without dependents at that time.  Employed as a millwright.  Resided at Felts Mills, Jefferson County, New York.

 

1930 US Census: William J. Richards, age 14 (b. NYS), resided with his parents on North Main Street in the Village of Randolph, Randolph Township, Orange County, Vermont.

 

1940 US Census: William Richards, age 25 (b. NYS), single, and employed as a farm laborer, resided in the household headed by Earnest Peck, age 72 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, in Champion Township, Jefferson County, New York.  William had completed 6th grade and in April 1935 he resided elsewhere in Jefferson County, New York.

 

William "Keith" J. Richards, II married (1st) Lena (?) and had the following son:

(1) Patricia Richards: Married Wayne Pather and resided at Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.

 

(2) Judy Richards: Married Denis Bolwitz and resided at Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.  Subsequently married (?) Charlesworth.

 

(d. George E. Richards: Born 1923 in Vermont.  Died 29 February 1944 from complications of wounds received in World War II; interred Felts Mills Cemetery, Felts Mills, Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York.

NYS) and employed as a lap cutter in a paper mill, was heading a household at 6 Liberty Street in the Village of West Carthage, Champion Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Pearl Houghton, age 28 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS); son, Floyd Houghton, age 5 (b. NYS); son, Stanley Houghton, age 4 (b. NYS); son, Lansing Houghton, age 3 (b. NYS); daughter, Dorothy Houghton, age 2; and daughter, Ruth Houghton, age 2 months (b. NYS).

 

1930 US Census: Oscar R. Houghton, age 40 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as a house painter, was heading a household in the Village of West Carthage, Champion Township, Jefferson County, New York.  His real estate was valued at $2,500, and he was married 1st at age 23.  The household also included his wife, Pearl Houghton, age 39 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), who was married 1st at age 22; son, Floyd R. Houghton, age 16 (b. NYS) and single; son, Stanley W. Houghton, age 14 (b. NYS); son, Lansing L. Houghton, age 14 (b. NYS); daughter, Dorothy M. Houghton, age 12 (b. NYS); daughter, Ruth F. Houghton, age 10 (b. NYS); son, Leo P. Houghton, age 9 (b. NYS); son, Earl O. Houghton, age 6 (b. NYS); son, Walter L. (Houghton) Benware at Black River, Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Before that resided at LaPuente, Los Angeles County, California.

Alton "Al"/"Manny" Wayne Richards: Born 1939.  Graduated 1956 from Adams Center High School, Adams Center, Adams Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Served in the US Air Force in Europe.  Graduated 1969 from California State University, Fullerton.  Owned a printing company; retired 2004.  In 2016 resided in California.  In February 2020 moved to Wisconsin.

 

1940 US Census: Harrison Branch, age 26 (b. SD) and employed as a petroleum salesman, was heading a household at 304 South Com. Street in the City of Eagle Grove, Eagle Grove Township, Wright County, Iowa.  He had completed 4 years of high school.  The household also included his wife, Donna Belle Branch, age 29 (b. IA), who had completed 4 years of high school; and daughter, Barbara Branch, age 1 (b. IA).  On 1 April 1935 they resided at Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa.

 

Alton married (1st), as her 2nd husband, Gail I. Shorkey (b. abt 1942) on 29 September 1967 in Orange County, California.  Gail had married (1st) William Clark and had the following children:

 

(1) Suzan (Clark) Richards: Formally adopted by Alton W. Richards.

 

(2) Synthia (Clark) Richards: Formally adopted by Alton W. Richards.

 

(3) Ronald (Clark) Richards: Formally adopted by Alton W. Richards.

 

(4) Sandra (Clark) Richards: Formally adopted by Alton W. Richards.

 

Alton and Gail were subsequently divorced.  Gail (Shorkey)(Clark) Richards married (3rd) William R. Watkins (b. abt 1948) in 1979 in Orange County, California.

 

At age 46 Alton married (2nd) Barbara Louise Branch (b. 1939 at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Dodge, Webster Co., IA), age 46, daughter of Harrison R. (b. Garretson, SD) and Donnabelle L. (Peterson) Branch (b. Sioux City, IA), in 1985 in Los Angeles County, California.

Born 2 May 1917 at Watertown, NY; daughter of Arthur H. (b. 1890, d. 1964; interred Dexter Cem.) and Carrie M. (Lawton) Kentfield.  Died 2 October 1979, age 62, in the House of the Good Samaritan Hospital, Watertown; interred Dexter Cemetery, Dexter, Jefferson County, New York.  Married (1st) Everett C. Richards (oldest son of William John Richards; see paragraph 2.(2.(a., above) and had the following son:

Helen married (2nd) her father-in-law, William John Richards, Sr. on 13 May 1960 at Adams Center, Jefferson County and resided there.  William's son, Alton Wayne Richards described this as "a marriage of elderly convenience."

 

1   Searl Eugene Richards, Ph.D.:

 

Born 31 March 1930 in Randolph Township, Orange County, Vermont.  Died 4 May 2000, age 70, from complications of a heart attack at Southwestern Memorial Hospital, Alvin/Houston, Harris County, Texas; remains were cremated.

 

Grew up in Carthage (Wilna Twp) and West Carthage (Champion Twp), Jefferson County, New York.  At some point moved with his father to Adams Center, Adams Township, Jefferson County.  Graduated 1947 from Adams Center High School.  Served in the US Air Force for 13 years (Enlisted 9 Jul 1947; discharged 3 May 1950 as a Corporal.  Reenlisted 3 October 1950; discharged 6 May 1954 as an Airman First Class.  Reenlisted 4 August 1954; discharged 3 August 1960 as a Staff Sergeant.  Service number: 12-289-908).  Subsequently resided in Texas, where he was employed by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

 

Searl Eugene Richards married (1st), as her 1st husband, Ann Marlene Gates, generation 1 of the Gates Annex, on 15 May 1951 at West Carthage, New York and had the following children:

Searl Eugene Richards may have had children with an unidentified woman while he was stationed in France in the early 1950s; there may also have been an illegal marriage to that woman (this verbally conveyed by Ann (Gates)(Richards) Drake to her daughter, Sue, just before Ann died).  When Searl returned to the US he separated from Ann and his children and proceeded to his next duty assignment in Colorado.  The marriage between Searl and Ann was annulled 17 May 1956.

 

Searl met Margaret Leola/Leal Sieg (photos) (b. abt 1929 at Houston, Harris Co., TX, d. 1983 at Clear Lake, Harris Co., TX from complications of cancer; interred Oak Park Cem., Alvin, TX) while stationed at George Air Force Base, Victorville, San Bernardino County, California.  They were subsequently married (registration 28 Jun 1958 in   Clark Co., NV) and had the following daughter:

 

3. Marsea Christine Richards: (photos) Born 1966 in Potter County, Texas.  Married (1st) David Wayne Day and had the following children:

Marsea married (2nd) Jose I. Olvera (b. abt 1983) on 9 May 2006 in Harris County, Texas.

 

Ann Marlene (Gates) Richards married 2nd Lorenzo Dow Drake, descendant #5 of generation 12 of the Descendants of Almond Henry Drake, on 25 August 1956 and had the following children:

5. Terry Duane Drake: Born 4 May 1959.  Died 21 July 2001.
